2 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/15/2019

Third brake line failure due to corrosion. Areas of failure are hidden from view above other components. Upon brake line failure, backup braking was inoperative in all cases. Vehicle was on a city street in motion attempting to stop. Brakes failed suddenly in all cases. Brakes were very noticibly inoperative before any indication on dash board. Pumping the pedal did nothing- the pedal went to the floor. Was told manufacturer no longer supplies brake lines for this vehicle.

3 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/21/2018

I lost my brakes totally not just half of them pulling a small trailer with iron going down a long hill in mankato, mn. On madison Ave. I rear ended a pick up which pulled over and I continued rolling down the hill building speed so I had to drive my truck into a wall with my daughter instead of reaching the next intersection. Gm has now changed their brake lines in to stainless steal since 2003 because they knew they had problems with their brake lines. My brake lines are on top of frame running back to the rear axle with the gas tank blocking most of the lines. There is only 1. 5 inches between the frame and body. Along side is the wiring harness going back to the rear, no room to inspect or see your brake lines. This could of been so worse because of all the traffic and our lives. Do something pls. . . Police report 18-25773 mankato police dept. Before someone gets killed!.

4 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/28/2018

Excessive rusting of the frame, brake lines, transmission lines, and fuel lines. The brake, transmission and fuel lines rusted completely out and required a full replacement. The frame has extensive rust and has deteriorated well beyond the frame of my 2003 camaro z28 which is 9 years older! the truck has less than 80k and has been well maintained, so there is no explanation for the amount and level of rust, except that there were inferior metals and manufacturing materials used in its construction.

7 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 11/14/2017

Poor quality brake lines have corroded making the brake system fail hard braking, had line rupture due to corrosion, near collision due to brake failure.

8 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/15/2017

Rear brake lines burst while I was in motion. I was going down the highway and had to use the gears to slow down. They were corroded through. Same thing happened in 2016 with my fuel pump line corroded through. Was leaking while I was driving. Did not notice for a few days until there was puddles of gas where I park. Over the past few years my cladding has been falling off from rust through on the bottom secure points.

9 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/20/2017

I have read NHTSA # 05v37900 and see that addresses the brake problems with brake line that I am having problems where the brake goes to the floor with no warning that is the same as the 2002 that is included in your recall. It appears that the same brake lines were used on the 2003 model. So why was the 2003 model not included in the recall as losing the brakes not a safety hazard. I was driving down the road when the brakes went out and was lucky there was no other traffic in the area.

10 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/05/2017

The brake line broke due to rust and as I have seen this is a on going thing. Gm says it is not a safety issue but it very much is as when the line brakes you lose paddle and at high speed this could kill people. The fact that they do not see this as a safety issue tells me a lot about gm and how they don't care about the people that buy from them. My truck was on the boat launch when the brake failed I'm lucky I did not lose my truck and boat. This needs to be fixed at no cost.

11 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Brake lines rusting out on these autos.

12 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 05/01/2017

With my Avalanche, I was towing a trailer with a car loaded and traveling at less than 10 mph, I applied the brakes to slow for a turn and lost nearly all the braking power. I pulled to the shoulder and noticed that one of the brake lines forward of the abs module located inside the left frame rail directly beneath the drivers seat had ruptured due to corrosion. Further inspection showed all brake lines in that area were covered with corrosion. All brake line were replaced with new stainless steel lines after researching that this very common problem was not authorized for recall. Repair cost: $950. 00. It would appear that brake problems of this frequency and magnitude should have been subject to recall as it is apparent that it is a design flaw and very dangerous.

13 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/13/2017

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While driving 25 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and noticed that there was no brake functionality. The contact was able to coast the vehicle to the nearest fuel station. The brake warning indicator illuminated when the failure occurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front brake line failed due to corrosion and the rear brake line also experienced severe corrosion and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.

14 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 03/15/2017

All the frame is rusted and all brake lines and fuel lines, and front end parts rusted.

15 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/27/2016

Brake lines corroded.

16 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/11/2016

My son was driving my 2002 Avalanche when the brake pedal went to the floor without any prior warning or dash lights. Although he did go through the intersection he was trying to stop for there was no traffic and no accident. The problem was a brake line failing.

17 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/17/2016

Lost total braking at red light at busy intersection,45 mph with the grace of god avoided a broadside hit, just missed a child on a bike, this was caused by a rusted brake line. What happen to the safety back-up in this design ? this is wrong. In so many ways. In the USA we need to hold our safety to its highest. How many will die before this problem is resolved .

18 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/02/2016

Rusted brake lines.

19 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/20/2016

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While attempting to stop at a traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to immediately stop the vehicle. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The contact noticed that a brake line was severely corroded, which caused a fracture in the brake line. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not repaired. The contact stated that several brake lines were previously repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 141,000.

20 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/04/2016

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While driving 20 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle. The contact collided head on into another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed and the vehicle was towed. The contact sustained minor injuries, but did not require medical attention. The contact, a licensed mechanic, diagnosed that the brake line was corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.

21 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 04/16/2016

Sitting at a stop light the brakes failed. Holding the brake while waiting for the light to change, the pedal all of a sudden went to the floor. When I began moving I had to keep the truck below 30 mph to allow the brakes to work with increased stopping distance factored in. After about a 5 mile drive home, checked the brakes and noticed a leak from rusted brake lines near the driver's door. Truck cannot be safely driven until rusted lines are replaced. No ability to make a regular stop much less an emergency stop in the present condition.

22 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 01/23/2016

Saturday January 23, 2016 during a snow storm my 2002 chevy Avalanche 2500 VIN# 3gngk26g02g170006 lost all brake control due to failed and corroded brake line under driver side door at retainer clip on side of frame without any warning signs of soft pedal or intermittent braking. This is the second truck driven a 2004 1500 with the same failed line in same place on frame. Just before the brake line failed there was a small car in front of me with two small children in the back seat that turned right if they came to a full stop I would have not been able to negotiate around them that could have resulted in injury and or death of the other occupants in the car. I do think that this is a big safety concern for all not just drivers of the affected trucks but anyone or object in its path. I asking for gm to recall all affected vehicles for a repair and replacement of all brake lines at the cost of general motors with brake lines coated like the poly armor lines to aid in the resistance of corrosion. The current lines are only made of steel with no top coating and are routed in direct spray off of tires and road with no splash shield to protect line from spray or foreign objects from striking lines. Sincerely patrick wright.

23 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/26/2015

Brake lines are made out of defective materials gm knows they have a problem the lines rust out prematurely . The first one blew out I was backing in a parking space pedal went to the floor. The second one blew at a traffic light pushed on the brake went thru the red light dodged traffic . The third on the interstate traffic was stopping suddenly pushed on the pedal another brake line broke went to the floor and I managed to hit the median cross the middle and get it stopped before a head on collision with the traffic heading the other direction on interstate 81 . The rest of the under side is rust and corrosion free only the brake lines are rusted out ! . That being said gm has a repair kit with coated lines they always have in stock because they know its a major problem !!! I got a repair estimate from my local dealership $1580. 00 I am replacing all steel lines . Please make them recall this is going to kill someone.

24 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/13/2015

Catastrophic brake failure because of four corroded brake lines. All four lines corroded in the bracket holding the lines to the driver side frame rail. I was driving the vehicle and when I attempted to apply the brakes there was initial resistance and then the brake pedal went straight to the floor. I attempted to apply the brakes again but the vehicle would not stop. I had to apply the parking brake to stop.

25 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 11/21/2015

Brake line failure. I was approaching a stop sign and applied the brakes. The pedal went to the floor and the abs activated and I was not slowing. There was no cross traffic so I luckily avoided an accident. The brake line failed due to rust. Braking ability with only the rear brakes active was virtually nonexistent and there was no warnings on the display. I do not understand how the previous investigation into gm brake lines was dismissed.

26 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 11/21/2015

Driving 50mph coming up to a red light with cross traffic attempted to stop and peddle went down to the floor. Narrowly missed a possibly deadly accident. Found that the front brake line had rusted through. Very surprised since there is very little rust on the underside of this truck. It would have been nice to have known about this potential issue.

27 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/17/2015

While driving my 2003 chevy Avalanche to work during rush hour traffic, another driver hit their brakes abruptly in front of me. This happens often during rush hour traffic in the morning in columbus, OH. I hit my brakes and they went to the floor! after I pumped them a few quick time, I ran the truck off the road while looking for any additional safe exit strategies. I down shifted, and had a very small amount of brake approximately 1/2" of usable pedal just above the floor board. I have read about the brake line problems, and have been fixing things on the truck since I got it. My wife's Toyota rav4 is 1 year newer (2004) and the underside of her car glistens compared to our chevy Avalanche. The kicker: she drives her rav4 every weekday even during snowy weather, and I drive the Avalanche only once a week! I own another vehicle (1997 Buick) I usually drive. The under side of the Avalanche is the epitome of rust - not just the brake lines but everywhere! when did brake lines become a wear part? I am pleading to your humane treatment of people over profit. This is exactly what this is; gm took extreme shortcuts, all parts under the truck are rusting badly more than any vehicle I have seen in my life. This isn't a northeast or snow belt problem, this is a gm problem. Will you please prevent this travesty from continuing before more people die unnecessarily? split braking systems were made a requirement, and gm is hiding behind that requirement. Was that the NHTSA intent to permit higher profits with the split braking systems? that is what gm is using it for and at the expense of peoples lives. Which is more important profit or lives? have a nice day!.

28 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/17/2015

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. While driving approximately 7 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard. The abs warning indicator illuminated. The emergency brake was engaged and the vehicle failed to stop. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake lines were rusted and the vehicle had multiple brake leaks. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.

29 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/05/2015

At slow speeds, the abs comes on without warning on dry pavement, so this is not a result of a slippery road surface. I have almost hit several things/cars. There was a previous recall for this exact issue (050068a), but the dealer says that the recall repair was already done and they will not perform the repair again. I can understand the dealer's position if this were not the result of a recall, but this seems to be an ongoing issue. The recall repair work was completed in 2006, and now in 2015, I am sure it has rusted again to the point that the same probelm is occurring. Rust in the braking system is a problem with this vehicle, as the brake lines have rusted out and failed twice already.

30 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/02/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The contact stated that the brake system failed when the brake pedal was depressed the brake system failed to engage. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic whom performed an inspection that located the brake lines located at the power booster and abs system severely corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 136,000. Li.

31 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 08/01/2015

My brakes felt spongy during a drive, after arriving at home and visually inspecting my brakes I pumped the brake pedal twice and the brake line ruptured which runs directly under the drivers seat. There is significant rust on all brake lines, I just want to make sure my rupture is recorded after reading ea11-001.

32 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/29/2015

Brake line failure: I had a ruptured steel break line failure while applying normal breaking pressure on the pedal. After further inspection of break lines, I found all break lines were rusted and in danger of also rupture.

33 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/15/2015

My family and I was traveling on a busy road at 45 mph, when we had to come to a stop and our brakes did not work. We almost slammed in the back of the car that was infront of us. My husband had to push the brake pedal all the way down to the floor and turn toward the grass shoulder. Thank god no one was hurt. My husband checked under the vehicle and saw that there was break fluid running out of the brake line. There were no warning lights or warning sounds that our vehicle made until after he started the vehicle again and then the vehicle gave a warning sound and a warning light. We are contacting our mechanic tomorrow because this happened after 6pm. I have been reading the other complaints on the Avalanche's break lines and my husband said that I should also file one.

34 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/04/2015

Yesterday,July 4th 2015 my 2004 Avalanche; with only 70k miles , the brakes failed. It was due to a rusted blown out brake line. I had no brakes driving on a mountainous road. I thought I was alone in this failure but after internet searching I find this is common problem with this vintage and model. I take very good care of my vehicles; underbody washing during inclement winter conditions , I was appalled at the underbody rust. Having other vehicles of similiar age and mileage with no rust, I felt gm has used inferior materials. Gm should stand up and admit their use of substandard materials and offer remedy. They should know that as a consumer if they don't I'll never buy another gm product.

35 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/02/2015

The brake line burst as I was shifting into drive could not stop vehicle, shifted it into park and was able to stop before hitting someone. Why are these lines not made of stainless steel? better yet why is this agency not doing anything about this? they jump all over a key switch that may cause a problem but do nothing for something as important as be able to safely stop our vehicles.
