36 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 11/13/2013

I own a 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche ltz and at times when the truck down shifts it will lunge forward. I really need to have my foot firmly pressed on the brake to keep the truck from possibly hitting something or someone in front of me. It does not do it all the time and it's rather random. I feel that is worse then it happening all the time because I don't know when to expect it. I have not received any notification of a recall, but I feel a fix is definitely in order. Something is not right and it could result in a crash.

38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/12/2013

I have began to notice when slowing down (foot off the gas and coasting with foot on brake, or brake applied) at any area where my speed decreases to less than 15 mph that my Avalanche will seem to sort of lunge forward. The first time I experienced this I believed it was related to me and ignored it. The next couple of times I experienced this I thought there may be something wrong with the gas or engine. I have spoken with several other owners (who own the same year model Avalanche and suburban - the suburban and Avalanche are made from the same frame/body/parts) and they state experiencing the same issue. I must be cautious to ride my brakes and be read to heavily apply them now when taking an off/on ramp and vehicles are in front of me as my vehicle has lunged forward before with vehicles in front of me. I noticed here that (at the time of this submission) that two other users have reported the same incident. I am hoping that my report here will help open an investigation with Chevrolet on this issue.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 09/03/2013

Episodically when ignition key switch is engaged it will stick and cause the starting motor to remain engaged requiring turning the switch back to off position then trying to restart the vehicle. Being careful not to hold the ignition switch key in the position necessary to engage the starter any longer than absolutely necessary to hear the engine fire then returning the key position to the run position seems to prevent the problem.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/20/2013

Engine light and reduce engine power and start loosing speed. After turned off for a few minutes work fine. This year in an hour ride have to stop at least 20 times. Computer codes stated need to change throttle body. Last week I change it and again the same problem.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/13/2013

The engine will die at any time with out warning. This happens fairly often. Sometimes after trying to restart it will restart with no delay and other times it will take a few minutes. Then it will run normally for no specific amount of time. Then it will die again. Incidences may occur hundreds of miles in between. The dealer says they don't know why it would do this and it would be very difficult to diagnose the problem because it happens spontaneously and it usually restarts quickly. This is very dangerous and turning the vehicle to get off the road when the engine dies is very hard to do.

42 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/15/2013

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche. While driving at an unknown speed, the low oil indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to sands Chevrolet (5418 grand Ave, glendale, az 85301) where the dealer stated that the contact needed to get more frequent oil changes. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure continued to recur. The vehicle was taken to courtesy Chevrolet (1233 e camelback rd, phoenix, az 85014) where it was diagnosed that the roller lifters failed, causing damage to the camshaft and the piston rings to collapse. The engine mounts also collapsed and the engine needed to be rebuilt. The vehicle was repaired. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle shook and the check engine and check traction control indicators illuminated. When the contact attempted to accelerate, the vehicle jerked and hesitated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the cylinder lifters for cylinders 1, 4, 6 and 7 failed due to an issue with the pressure release valve in the active fuel management system. The lifters needed to be replaced. The vehicle was then taken back to courtesy Chevrolet where the diagnosis and repairs were confirmed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and stated that they would not assist. The contact was advised to speak with NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 85,300.

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

My chevy Avalanche has a generation for vortex 5300 engine we are using at least a quarter volt in between oil changes also the oil monitoring system is allowing me to drive and to operate the vehicle without adequate oil because the oil gauge is not reading when the oil is ready to be changed. This has been happening since the day we purchased it new in 2013 we were told by the dealership that this is typical of this engine I'm now finding out that it is not and that it is involved in a class action lawsuit and I need to be documented in that lawsuit.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

For the last year or so my 2003 chevy Avalanche has had an intermittent problem of throttling down when I hit about 60 mph. The error words pop up of "reduced engine power" and I have to pull over (after negotiating highway traffic to get to shoulder with no power) and turn engine off and let it sit for a few minutes before starting it. Sometimes it does it multiple times in the first hour of driving. Seems to do it more when the weather is colder than when hot.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/22/2012

On 12/22/12 @ 5pm- shortly after entering onto the freeway, I started losing power. I didn't get higher than 50 mph before the rpm started increasing & my speed started decreasing. I got off the freeway, at the first exit, approximately 2mins after the beginning of the loss of power. Found a mechanic that was just closing his shop & asked him to give a quick check too see if I could continue my drive home, 32mins away. The mechanic checked under the hood & under the bottom & guesstimated the problem to be the flywheel. The mechanic also recommended no driving til repaired. I got my Avalanche towed home that first night. I towed it to my local auto repair shop on 12/24/12, to get a full diagnostic. I was advised by my local mechanic that my 2005 Avalanche w/ 96319 mis, needs a new transmission. My local mechanic advised it may still be under warranty due to mileage, but I have since found out the warranty is 5yr/100000mi. Gm is aware of premature transmission failure on the Avalanche, but is not fixing it for the consumer. Something needs to be done to protect the consumer!.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 12/07/2011

Traveling home from work on the interstate at regulated speed (65mph). As I started to accelerate to maintain speed gingo up a hill, the message "transmission hot" came on the in-dash display and engine began revving as if not in gear. I could not accelerate and had to turn on flashers and merge to safety lane on right. I continued to slow down until I could engage the transmission again at around 30 mph in 3rd gear. As soon as I started to accelerate past 35-40 mph, the transmission slipped again and would not engage any gear. This happened all the way home so what should have been a 20 minute drive turned into an hour. I couldn't get above 35-45 mph without this happening each time which made navigating the hills of northern va in the rain not very fun for me nor the hundreds of frustrated drivers behind and beside me. As I pulled into the driveway and parked, I could notice a 'burnt and sour" smell. . . Most likely transmission fluid. I didn't see any leaks or drips but the engine was extremely hot as was transmission and transfer case. This has been happening off and on for a few months now but in very limited occasions and never for more than 10-20 seconds so I haven't contacted a service station but will definitely do so this weekend as I am unable to leave work during the week for this issue.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 07/21/2011

At @4000 miles on the vehicle the engine light came on. The dealership found that there was no oil in the engine and #1 spark plug was bad. They replaced the plug & oil. Again about another 4000 mile it did the same thing. They replaced the valve guide seals, that stopped the spark plug from going bad, but I have to put a quart of oil in it every 3,000 miles. A vehicle using synthetic oil should go about 7,500 miles or more. That means two quarts oil between changes. They claim with general motors that is acceptable. I have never owned a new vehicle where I had to add oil before and due oil change. The same vehicle has so much wind noise coming in around the doors or windows it is hard to hear the radio. My complaint to the dealer their answer was – there isn’t a bulletin on this. That means they don’t know what to do, or won’t. And didn’t do a thing.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 06/15/2011

Reduced engine power , engine dies no power steering or power brakes almost rear ended on I-25. Trouble code says p2135 throttle body has happened 20 times or more in 8 months. Dealer where purchased say they never heard of this problem then said new wiring harness might fix it,knew the price without looking it up? there are thousands of posts on line about problem, but they never heard of it. Wiring harness replaced throttle body cleaned and checked peddle checked still happens ,have spent hundreds. No solution . I have to drive on highway to get to work on oil rig,I'm afraid it well cause an accident . Gm doesn't know what is causing problem and doesn't seem to care.

02 Avalanche 2500, engine just stops running while driving. Speed doesn't make a difference. It just dies and I have no power brakes,no power steering. The has been getting worse and is very dangerous to myself and others in traffic around me. It may take up 5 minutes to restart now. 2 chevy dealers say they can't find any problem codes and I can't afford to pay for unneeded parts for trial and error repair. Please help get this problem dealt with. I know there are other owners of the same model, year of this vehicle have same problem. It has been know about for some time that the 2002 Avalanche 2500 8. 1 liter engine has this problem. It is also known that replacing the crankshaft position sensor will cure it. Truck shuts off while driving. When this happens I lose power steering and brakes. Will occur at all speeds including 70 mph on the interstate. Very scarey situation that could cause a large accident in rush hour. After researching this on the internet, I have found this is a problem with the make and model truck I have. 62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche

Failure Date: 11/15/2003

I have not given permission to the dealership service department to start repairs. They told me it was the rear axle or rear end that was damaged beyond repair and must be replaced. I was quoted a repair cost of $2,400 for a used part and $3,000 for a new part. This truck has around 42,000 miles and was purchased June 1, 2003. I have had multiple problems ranging from replacement of cd's to a door window motor problem. I inquired/complained about a noise in the rear end at around 25,000 miles prior to the breakdown. However, they could not find the problem. The tailgate would fall open when locked occasionally, but this was adjusted after taking it back for repair. I have also replaced one hub assembly on the front of the truck at a cost of $250. 00. There is an oil usage problem that requires an additional quart to be added between changes. I personally think that this truck is a lemon and needs to be researched to discern if it has had some previous mechanical problems. Although it was purchased new there is a possibility that it could have had some malfunctions before it was delivered. I misplaced my receipts, and I'm not sure that the service department will give me another copy. However, I will search for them as verification that I took the truck in on several occasions for various and sundry complaints.
