Took my 1997 Blazer for PA. State inspection,failed because of corroded lower ball joints. . . Replaced at my expense. Mechanic also advised me to keep an eye on idler arm-looked to be weakening. I later went on dealer website and found a recall notice for upper and lower ball joints for this vehicle. I called dealer and was told my VIN # was not included in recall. Called Chevrolet and was told there was no recall for lower ball joints, only uppers. My mechanic was shocked to see such extreme corrosion on a later model and he said it was so bad he couldn't believe it had not fallen off and caused an accident.
Had to replace lower ball joints for second time within 20,000 miles.

Upper and lower ball joint failure. If the upper or lower ball joint fail on a 1997 prior to 8 years or 100,000 miles they will be replaced according to your system. This would lead me to believe that they should not fail within 100,000 miles. My Chevrolet Blazer has failed at aproxamately 87,000 miles.
Nar 04/10/2003 the consumer right front upper ball joints of the vehicle were damaged in addition to that both the lower ball joints needed to be replaced. And after having repairs made. With out receiving any notification there had been a recall issued for the vehicle (recall campaign #-01v200000) that cover both the upper and lower ball joints. So the consumer is requesting a reimbursement of approximately $692. 84 in replacements.
Lower ball joints and idler arm failure. Vehicle failed state safety inspection. Same components previously replaced by dealer at 36,414. Chevrolet not assuming any responsibility for repeated failure. Dt.

Steering problems since vehicle acquired. Reported to dealer in 2001, response "unable to replicate customer concern. " went to another dealership when problem persisted (2002). Upper ball joint replaced under recall. Returned to dealer because alignment not completed, advised that lower ball joint also bad and not covered by recall but was in similar condition as upper. Did not align at that time either. Attempted contact with gm, they declined to replace, repair or further investigate (ref# 1-78000118).

The upper and lower ball joints failed.
While recall repairs on upper ball joints were done, mechanic noticed lower ball joints were worn out as well.
When turning left or right, there is a loud noise. Took vehicle to the dealer for an oil change, mechanic stated that ball joints were shot. Consumer indicated that there was a recall for same part on 1996 and 1997 models. . Consumer was informed by manufacturer that vehicle was not included in recall due to the VIN.
Ball joints are already bad.

Consumer states when to get alignment, was told alignment could not be performed unless the ball joints were replaced, the dealer noted that the lower ball joints wore out due to lack of lubrication which may have caused the vehicle to pulling th the left, the dealer replaced upper and lower ball joints on both sides, replaced idler and pitman arm and perform alignment, dealer stated never heard of any recall. However there is a recall campaign 01v200000 involving replacing upper and lower ball joints. Consumer wants to be reimbursed for repairs.
While driving at any speed vehicle drifted to the right. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for an examination, and mechanic determined that the lower ball joints needed replacement.
While driving steering was not working rightly. At same had received a recall notice. Then ,took vehicle to dealer for upper balls joint. But, mechanic said that lower balls joints had to be replaced. Warranty had expired seven days befor,e and had to be repaired at owner's espence. Please provide more information.
Steering wheel is looser and unresponsive than normal. Driver then received a recall letter 01v200000 concerning ball joints. Consumer feels this is the cause of the problem. Consumer contacted dealer, and vehicle was not covered. Consumer was informed that the manufacturer would replaced the ball joints if the vehicle was less than 8 yeasr old or if the mileage was less than 100,000 miles however consumer was informed that his vehicle was not included in the recall.
Consumer received a letter from Chevrolet regarding a program to replace upper ball joints, but the lower ball joints needed to be replaced as well.
When recall 01i018000 repairs on upper ball joint were done mechanic noticed that lower ball joints needed to be replaced, as well.
While at an inspection station lower ball joints malfunctioned. Vehicle was taken to a mechanic, and they replaced lower ball joints. Although there is a recall for replacing the upper ball joints - 01v200000 - the lower ball joints were replaced at owners expense, consumer also received letter from gm regarding replacement of upper ball joints.
While driving 20 mph there was a loud knocking on front right tire, took vehicle to mechanic, consumer was then informed that there was a recall on 1997, Chevrolet, Blazer concerning upper and lower ball joints, it was not safe to drive vehicle. Manufacturer stated this vehicle was not included in recall due to VIN.
Need replacement of lower ball joints in order to pass inspection.
Truck bought new. At 47,576 miles, left and right lower ball joints replaced. Again, at 84,200 miles same ball joints to be replaced. Another chevy dealer told me 96to97 Blazers have ball joint defect recall, recall not extended to 98 Blazers. Seems fishy. My truck is serviced every 3,000 miles.
Consumer received a recall notice for the upper ball joints, NHTSA campaign id number 01v200000. The mechanic had commented to consumer, prior to bringing the vehicle in that it was very unlikely that the defective upper ball joints would not destroy the lower ball joints, when the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for the upper ball joint recall repair, consumer found out that the lower ball joints also needed to be replaced which would be at the consumers expense.

Recall #01v2000000 concerning lower ball joint boot. Consumer feels that this vehicle should be included in recall. Upper ball joint broke, almost causing an accident and cutting wheel into pieces, the other upper and both lower ball joints were weak.
Both front lower ball joints were defective. Dealer was notified, and informed consumer that it was not covered under a manufacturer's recall. Feel free to provide any further information concerning this matter.
While exiting interstate at 65 mph, consumer was making a right hand turn, and without warning front passenger's side wheel caved due to lower ball joint snapping. Wheel caved in at about a 45 degree angle. Vehicle was not driveable, and had to be towed. Consumer vehicle would have rolled over if consumer droveat a higher speed. Took truck in for new tires/ excessive wear on front tires/ told both lower ball joints were bad. Mechanic stated he personally worked on 7 or 8 4x4 Blazers in the last 2 months, with bad lower ball joints. The yrs on these vehicles ranged from 1997 to 1999. Major safety concerns!!!.
When turning the steering wheel, there is a vibration and a loud groaning sound. This began in March 01, and continues. At this point it is almost constant. A gm service manager said it was the ball joint and that he was surprised that there was not a recall. We have tried to keep up with the recalls, but there haven't been any regarding this matter. We are concerned that it might be a safety hazard, but at this point we have no other option than to drive this vehicle.
When replacing tires, noticed unacceptable play in the lower ball joint on the right side. This should not have happened at only 36k.
Replaced front ball joints 3 times. Once within a month after recall 98v053000 repairs. The vehicle had to be serviced again for clunking but dealer couldn't determine the cause. Consumer fells uneasy driving this vehicle.

Jack's Chevrolet's service department at only 45,000 miles reported front end looseness which included upper and lower ball joints and idler arm. Would like Chevrolet to act socially responsible and repair this obvious defect and not push off onto unsuspecting public.
When leaving a parking lot onto the street, there was a "clunk" sound which came from the right front tire area. I drove approximately one block and heard a rubbing sound, thought I had a flat. I pulled into a parking lot and observed the right front tire was tilted in toward the center of the vehicle. The dealer replaced the upper right and both lower ball joints. When I asked how this happened, I was told "metal fatigue".
Ea99022, passenger side ball joint broke while driving causing a crash. Dealer had to replace the passenger and driver side ball joints. Common problem. Consumer was injured in accident.
