While driving, the vehicle suddenly lost all electric power steering assist, making the steering extremely heavy and difficult to control. This occurred without warning and significantly increased the risk of a crash, especially at low speeds and during turns. The issue occurs intermittently and temporarily resolves after restarting the engine, which suggests an intermittent failure. The defect matches the description in gm’s active recall (gm recall n252497020 / NHTSA campaign 25v175000) for similar 2017 Chevrolet Camaro models, involving a faulty printed circuit board in the steering gear assembly. This failure has happened multiple times and creates an immediate safety hazard. I have not yet had the issue confirmed by a dealer because gm and the dealership are requiring me to pay a diagnostic fee, even though this is a known safety defect on similar vehicles. The steering system has not been inspected by the manufacturer at this time. A warning message stating “service power steering” sometimes appears after the failure, but not every time. No other warning signs were present before the loss of assist. This problem has occurred during normal driving conditions on public roads.

The vehicle randomly started giving me a service power steering system message. Just got into my vehicle and now the power steering system will not work.
Steering assist failure and is not included in the 2018 recall of other general motors vehicles. The failure is as described in the cars under the recall. Gm has no desire to cover this component failure. This is a serious safety issue as it still can be steered but with great effort and could result in a serious wreck. The car has 12,000 miles and garage kept. There are no check engine lights. The battery is good with a full charge. The engine temp is good. The car is currently at the gm dealership and I am being told that it will be my responsibility to pay for it.
Loss of power steering assist.

The contact owns a 2018 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated when the vehicle was started, the steering wheel failed to turn in the intended direction. The contact stated that the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed with steering gear failure. The contact was informed that the steering gear needed to be replaced and reprogrammed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced an unknown recall repair; however, the VIN was not associated with the unknown recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 92,276.
The power steering failed on June 17th, 2025 at approximately 3 pm. The system has been replaced by the local dealership so it is not available for inspection (dealership did it's own evaluation/inspection and determined the need for replacement). The vehicle was being driven when the power steering failed, so my safety and the safety of others on the same roadways was put at risk (fortunately, I was only about 1. 5 miles from home). Prior to replacing the necessary parts, the local dealership reproduced and confirmed the problem was present (documentation to follow). The local dealership inspected the vehicle. As no accident occurred, local law enforcement and insurance representatives have not been involved. No warning lamps or messages or other symptoms of the problem occurred prior to the failure. A warning message was displayed once the failure occurred.
I was driving and my steering all of a sudden got hard to do, my steering wheel was shaking, the steering was difficult to steer and it said on my dash, "electronic steering assist" I was going 60 mph and had to get my car off the road, as I slowed the car got harder to steer, I almost hit another car and ditched it. This is not the first time it's happened on my Camaro, it's happened at least a dozen times in the last 18 months. This is dangerous and I need this corrected! I don't trust it and I am going to hurt myself or someone if you don't fix this. There was a recall before but it did not correct this problem!.
Vehicle shipped in unsafe driving condition I purchased this vehicle from cars2us with a clear understanding that the vehicle was in good working order. I paid $500 for shipping along with $3,000 cash down. I purchased it from out of state so I had to have the vehicle shipped to my work site. When I received the vehicle off the trailer, it was borderline underivable due to the rack and pinion and power steering system being faulty. I immediately contacted the dealer and he agreed to have it repaired and advised me to “take it to a mechanic you trust”! I did so and the mechanic called me to inform me that the manager of the dealership tried to convince him to put junkyard parts on the vehicle to fix it. The mechanic was infuriated and insulted by this and advised me to contact an attorney. I paid the full amount for the repairs totaling over $2,000 because he did a job he was asked to do and rightly deserved to be paid for doing so. The mechanic and I tried multiple times to contact him for repayment and he has not paid nor responded. I have all of our conversations and will happily attach them to this email. I’m furious because the vehicle was knowingly shipped to me in an extremely dangerous condition and I was forced to drive it to my house 13 miles away as well as the mechanic shop another 6 miles. I emailed the attorney general of virginia and reported the incident. It’s my goal to protect other customers from experiencing this kind of behavior and treatment. If you could please help me out in any way it would be greatly appreciated. Best regards.

Electronic steering assist. I was going down to road and all of a sudden my car was hard to steer and my steering wheel was shaking very hard. I carefully pulled it off the road before I lost control put it in park and shut it off. My steering wheel continued to shake and vibrate and it was also loud like the electronic part didn't shut off with the car. It continued to do this for about 10 minutes with the car off. I started it again and it seemed to be normal. I called the dealer they confirmed the electronic steering assist was an issue and it was recalled for this and the repairs were no good. They said it mlnever do it again but it also might but there was no fix! well my car's electronic steering assist has done this several times almost causing me to hit another car, ditch, mailbox and pedestrians. It's not safe, it happened again yesterday as a matter of fact, for over a year and I don't trust it! I'm afraid when I'm driving it. I put in a safety complaint more than once, I need this repaired correctly this time before I injured myself or someone else! thank you, I'll be looking forward to hearing from you! please help me, I love my Camaro!.
Cars power steering periodically goes out during ever drive you turn the car off and back on and it works for a little while and then does it again.
When driving down the street, I got a warning light and my power steering went out. This is a car with 18,000 miles on it and it should'nt have failed so quickly. When I researched the issue, gm has recall #n182182760 that states this is a known issue for the Camaro but for some reason my VIN is not included. This is a $3,000 repair I am being asked to pay for a known issue, can someone help? it is the power steering module.
I got a message in the dash saying "service power steering". . . . Then the steering wheel began to shake violently until I pulled the car off the road. After I shut the car off, the car was still shaking for a total of 2 minutes. The front wheels and steering wheel appeared as if the car was having a seizure. I shut the car off for 20 minutes, turned it back on and it was like nothing ever happened. My scan tool at home and picked up the code "c055c:61 steering gear performance stuck".
The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated that while driving 37 mph and approaching a curve in the road, the “service power steering” warning light illuminated, and the steering wheel seized. The contact used an excessive amount of force to steer the vehicle and drove to a nearby parking lot. After the vehicle was parked for approximately 6 hours, the contact restarted the vehicle, and the vehicle regained power steering functionality. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who refused to service the vehicle due to its age of the vehicle. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000.

While driving I experienced the wheel becoming more stiff unexpectedly while turning even slightly it would randomly get harder to turn. A power steering warning came on saying to be careful and right after the car started shaking really bad. Stop the car checked tires tie rods sway bar other steering components and nothing seemed abnormal. Was able to drive the rest of the way home but still had the random stiffness at the steering wheel.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated while attempting to reverse, the steering wheel seized. The vehicle was diagnosed with steering failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 19v086000 (steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 71,000.
The electronic power steering system failed during track driving. Driving aggressively for almost 30 minutes, the power steering assist failed to “assist”; the vehicle was able to be steered but only with great effort in turning the steering wheel causing a loss of control. The message “service power steering” message appeared on the instrument cluster. Exiting the track and turning the vehicle off then on allowed the steering system to return to normal.

The electric power steering fails at no giving time. The vehicle is a 2016 and out of warranty but only has 39,000 on it. There are no codes set by this fault. This is a huge safety consern being the steering works as it should and without no warning comes and goes.

My 2014 Camaro ss, has about 35k miles on it now, and only drive during the summer. I was looking for a parking spot at work, went to turn right, and the steering wheel totally locked up on me, would not turn left or right from a straight position, ended up slamming on the brakes for I wouldn't run into the embankment in front of me. Put the car in park, kept playing with the steering wheel, and it finally came free and turned right, after trying to go from left to right a couple of times. So put it back in drive and it performed normally the rest of the day. Sometimes when parking the car, the key will not go fully into the lock position, without starting and shutting the car down a few times, and wiggling the steering wheel in the center position. I see there is a steering related recall on this vehicle but thinking that isn't the problem, but will check it out just in case. But as you can see this could be a very dangerous situation when driving down the highway at 70 mph. This car was also one that had the key upgrade to it for the issue with the ignition switch, but thinking that isn't an issue. I also used to work for gm in powertrain, and the switch/sensor area for a while where the one gentleman was fired from, and now retired from gm. So am very familiar with vehicles and thinking it may be the locking mechanism in the steering wheel that is having issues, or the pcm is having glitches? any help you can provide would be most appreciated.

When I was driving my steering wheel started shaking I could hear a noise and it was harder to steer. On my dash it showed drive careful steering power steering assistance system I pulled the car over and turned it off but I could hear the electrical system in the power steering did not shut down and my steering wheel was still shaking. About 45 seconds later it shut down. I went out to my car the following day and started it and the power steering was fine, there was no more shaking or noise in the electrical part of my steering assistance. It was fine. But it doesn't seem safe to me at all. The recall on it was fixed but it seems there is still an issue with this and it could cause someone to get into an accident and hurt or kill someone.
Driving in extreme cold and heat conditions and the heater would not heat nor would the air conditioner blow cool air. The window would not defrost making visibility impossible during heavy rain and snow. Nearly recked due to heater and air not working. Had vehicle trouble to dealer and discovered blend door to air conditioner /heater is faulty. There was a recall in 2019 for this part on 2015 Camaro yet I am told by gm my VIN is not covered. My car is not safe to drive in extreme heat due to the possibility of heat stroke or exhaustion nor in inclimate weather due to visibility issues. Gm needs to add my VIN to the 2019 recall due to the highly dangerous possibility of bodily injury from the faulty blend door. In addition, the key fab gets in the way of leg room causing the car to shut off when driving.

Power steering on vehicle failed causing the steering to lock up while driving with almost no ability to stear the car. This problem was found and issued a recall on earlier years but not mine although the car was built the same time as those earlier years.
Rack and pinion system failed. I lost steering while driving on the highway almost causing me to crash. I called gm about taking in my car because I saw there was a recall on my year and model for this issue but when I gave them my VIN number they said mine was not included. I asked them if my car is having the same issue as the recall and my year and model was recalled how can they tell me my VIN number is not on the recall, they told me it was not so they could not fix it. It was looked at by a steering shop and there verified that the assist power steering motor was broke ( the assist motor is what the recall was done for by gm). There was a light that came on the first time and has everytime I start the car ( service power steering).
Loss of power steering.

The driver may accidentally bump the ignition key with their knee, moving the ignition.
The vehicle has been taken to the shop 3 times, for service rear axle issue. Now has a power steering fault code which when it came on made the car hard to control luckily I was only going 20 mph. The car looses power as well.
When I drive my knee turns the key, causing a the car to turn off. This is a safety issue that is concerning I am a mom. Every time my knee hits the part key while the car is on it turns the car off. The heater is an issue I have air but no heat. In order for me to fix the heater I told they would have to remove the entire window, but I would have to sign a waiver, because the window could break. Then they would have to remove the dash and another part in order to fix the heat in the car. This is in my opinion a safety issue I don’t understand how the heater could be fixed without causing the window in the car to possibly break. I was told the chances of the window not breaking in order to fix the heater in the car is nearly impossible. Which means I would have to buy a window and pay for labor in order to fix the heat in the car. 1. I have an ignition issue my knee is turning off the car when I drive. 2. Fixing the heat in the car is nearly impossible. 3. Please help check for recalls.
After driving approximately 4 hours at highway speeds of 65- 70 mph the steering became very difficult to move, then suddenly the car jolted in the intended direction creating an need to compensate back in other direction. Same issue encountered I had to force the steering in the direction to correct and stay in lane, again jolting in the opposite direction. This happened repeatedly until I could exit the highway. During city travel car responded normally. On return home after approximately 4 hours driving again, same situation no control of steering. Extremely dangerous situation, car is not road worthy. Brought to dealer, response after 3 days in shop - no codes so nothing to repair. Failure of Camaro steering due to rack and pinion, and control boards are found for many similar events during proceeding years of the car.
