Front Air Bag Problems of Chevrolet Cavalier - part 1

I was driving down the road and a large pick up truck pulled out in front of me and I smashed into the side of the truck and neither the driver or passenger airbags deployed. I was going approximately 45 mph on impact.

Vehicle accident with seat and airbag failure on 5-23-08. Reported to gm 5/27/08 case. Spoke with gm rep then transferred to local dealership who said he would discuss with district manager. On 1/8/10 I again called for follow-up. The previous case had been closed and a new one opened and I was told I would be contacted. I followed up on 2/16/09 and was told it was being handled by motors liquidation. I expressed my concern was safety based - not money based, still had the vehicle for an investigation. The rep. Explained because the accident occurred prior to the "new" gm they were not concerned about it. I explained the accident date was of no concern to the safety considerations as there are still these types of vehicles on the road. They failed to report to you on two occasions. The bigger issue is gm's policy of reporting and investigating safety issues. If mine is an example, how many other complaints have been ignored or discarded because of the bankruptcy filing? in other words, if there was a problem with the vehicle before then we can assume it may be an issue of recall now regardless of "new" or "old" gm statues. It is very important to me this be taken seriously. We still have the vehicle sitting in our back yard for the purpose of investigating the issue. At some point we need to dispose of it and move on. I just feel a moral obligation - where obviously gm does not. I am happy to give any information or assistance to resolve this matter. Please take it seriously - I don't want anyone else to experience the injuries we have - especially if it is preventable.

: the contact stated a loud pop was heard on the inside of the vehicle, and then the dashboard cracked down the middle. The contact is concerned the airbag could deploy without an accident. The vehicle has been seen by the dealership, but no repairs were made.

1996 Chevrolet Cavalier passenger air bag inadvertently deployed striking the consumer's 9 year old son in the face. The vehicle was traveling at 20 mph.

While slowing from a speed of 45 mph the vehicle's air bags deployed. The consumer tried to control the vehicle as the air bag was blocking her view. The vehicle came to a stop in a ditch. Two witnesses assisted the consumer. The consumer stated that there was no collision until the air bag deployed.

The front air bags inadvertently deployed. . No collision prior to air bag deployment, slowed to stop, approximately from stop sign. Air bag deployed, vehicle skidded into a ditch.

Consumer was traveling 35 mph and both frontal air bags went off inadvertently. No injuries reported. Consumer was able to drive it home, and will contact the dealer.

When trying to avoid a crash at 15 mph vehicle went into a ditch. The frontal air bags deployed after the vehicle came to a complete stop. Consumer suffered injuries. Had the vehicle towed to dealership, who could not resolve the problem.

Vehicle was taken to the dealer for a routine inspection, and mechanic determined that both frontal air bags were faulty and needed to be replaced.

My grand daughter was in a low speed accident. No body damage but the air bags inflated the passenger side broke the windshield. The driver side nearly broke her arm ask the dealer to reload air bags and replace the windshield they refused.

While driving 25 mph the driver hit a pot hole which caused both frontal air bags to deploy. The driver was not hurt. The driver had the vehicle towed to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic could not determined a cause at this time. Please provide any additional information.

While driving at 30 vehicle was involved in a frontal collision, and neither of the air bags deployed. Also, seat belt did not hold the driver.

Vehicle's air bag inadvertently deployed while driving.

Fuel pump seal disintegrated. Cost $1,081. 00 (including 3 day car rental). Earlier this year there was a recall on the steering column and I wound up paying an additional $600 for other defects not covered by the recall. Think that this and many additional problems on this car constitute it being a lemon. More than 5 recalls in 7 years.

Defective steering column in 97 Cavalier, caused an accident resulting in extreme injuries. Nhtsa campaign id number : 02v286000. The consumer was making a slow left and the vehicle pulled to the right. The air bag deployed late striking the consumers left eye.

Vehicle accelerated on its own and vehicle flipped over causing injuries and total loss of vehicle.

Vehicle did not pass inspection because vehicle does not have air bags. The vehicle was involved in an accident and the air bags deployed. The consumer purchased the vehicle as is.

While driving at 40-50 mph air bags deployed unexpectedly. Contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything.

Both air bags deployed while parked. Dealer and manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

The consumer states that a 2001 Chevrolet caviler has faulty seat belts. The consumer was in involved in a crash with a garbage truck. The consumer was hit by another vehicle that ran a red light. The consumer was knocked under the garbage truck. The consumer had one passenger and two family pets with him. The driver and passenger were buckled up. The passengers knees went through the dashboard. The seatbelt did not hold the passenger securely in the seat. The seatbelt looped the passengers bowels. This happened on Friday and on Monday the passenger had to have major surgery to remover some of her intestines. The speed was about 30-35 mph when the crash occurred. A year later the passenger was still having problems with her knees, from the crash. The passenger ended up with cancer in the knees, in the exact same spot that her knees were injured in the wreck. In April the passenger passed away, and the driver believes that this was a result from the seatbelts not working. The consumer does have pictures of the crash and a police report. No insurance report. All of the information provided is all that the owner has access to or knows.

Was driving 25mph and was starting to turn into driveway, when both air bags deployed without warning. The driver's air bag exploded with a lot of smoke & caused the driver to suffer burns on chest. Nlm two people were injured.

While driving 25 mph on a gravel road both airbags deployed, then exploded. Driver and passenger suffered burns on face and chest.

Air bags failed to work when involved in a crash resulting in car hitting bank and turning upside down. My dad was the owner of this car but I feel a replacement car with working airbags will keep this from going into litigation.

While vehicle was stopped at a traffic light air bags unexpectedly deployed without a collision occurring, cause unknown. Upon deployment air bag broke windshield, which consumer replaced at his own expense.

While traveling 60-65mph and had rear ended a stalled out vehicle. Upon impact with other vehicle, both air bags came out, but failed to inflate. No injuries occurred.

Had trouble with traction light. Car would lose traction even with new tirew all time brakes and car was totaled in car wreck, airbags did not come out, and daughter was hurt. It was a front and side and back hit at 55-60 mph, hitting a ramp direct and bouncing off, and hitting again on an interstate. Very upset that airbags did not come out, would of prevented maybe daughter from getting hurt so badly.

While driving about 30 mph front driver's air bag deployed without a warning or a reason.

As consumer began to break and slow down, due to congestion that she noticed that was in front of her, a vehicle pulled in front of her, so to avoid a collision consumer slammed on the brakes, and all of a sudden the airbags deployed violently and subsequently consumer rear-ended the vehicle, consumer and the passenger suffered severe injuries, however the very next day after the accident, the consumer received recall notification(98026) the manufacturer is not willing to take any responsibility for the accident, consumer was informed by a represenative from general motors that the recall was old and that the airbags should already have been replaced, consumer then informed the represeantive that the vehicle was not purchased new.

While driving about any speed vehicle will stall without prior warning. A pull in the shifts when they change gear due to transmission failure. Consumer doughtyer is driving the car it stall causing minor accident in which the air bag violently deployed hitting the driver in causing injury, the other air bag broke the windshield.

While driving on local street traveling about 20mph, vehicle swerved to avoid hitting a cat on the road, and hit a parked car in the street. Upon impact, neither airbag deployed.

Was traveling 70mph when suddenl/for no reason, both air bags deployed. Did not hit or run over anything. Drove vehicle to dealership. Was informed by service manager, a recall was on vehicle. An inspector checked vehicle & to decipher code on vehicle. Finally no recall.

The telephone pole was struck head-on at 20 mph , airbags failed to delpoy. As result, sustained back and neck injuries.
