Side/window Air Bag Problems of Chevrolet Cavalier

The contact owns a 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier. While driving at 30 mph, the driver side air bag independently deployed. The contact was unable to see the roadway and the passenger had to maintain control of the steering wheel as the vehicle steered of road into a gas station area. Both the passenger and contact exited the vehicle and the front passenger side air bag then independently deployed. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was awaiting a diagnosis of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,950 and the current mileage was 136,018. While driving at 55mph the passenger side airbag deployed. When the airbag deployed it ripped apart the dash and busted the windshield. Luckily my son was not injured and managed to keep the car under control to get it off the highway without having an accident. When gm was contacted they said sorry this car was not affected by the recall for the airbags.

My daughter was involved in an accident. She rear ended another vehicle on a rain slick road. There were no injuries although she is now in the process of having her sore neck evaluated by a doctor. She was the only occupant in her vehicle (2005 chevy Cavalier). The passenger airbag deployed with enough force to break the windshield. The driver side airbag deployed but did not inflate properly. Upon inspection, it is apparent that a hole in the airbag (about the size of a quarter) is the reason the airbag did not work properly. Obviously, the failure of the driver side airbag is the reason for this complaint.

The contact stated that there were two cracks running side by side from the windshield to the passenger side on the dashboard. The contact discovered the problem on October 5, 2005. He was concerned about it because there was an air bag on the passenger's side. The cracked area was where the air bag was located. When he took vehicle to dealer to be looked at they said that everything in the dash area was connected to the dashboard. The cracked part of the dashboard was loosening from the rest of the dashboard.

While vehicle was parked and running idle driver's side air bag deployed inadvertently. Owner contacted the manufacturer, who suggested that the vehicle be put on a diagnostic machine to determine fault.

While driving, consumer's vehicle was hit on the front driver's side,then vehicle rolled over. Upon impact, side air bags did not deploy. Consumer sustained minor injuries. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision, and only the passenger side air bag deployed.

While traveling 35 mph and as a result of being cut off by an SUV, passenger's side air bag deployed, but driver's side air bag didn't deploy. Manufacturer has been contacted. The driver of the vehicle suffered injuries. The injuries included unconsiousness, broken sternum, seat belt abrasions, contusions, concussion to name a few. The crash was considered a full frontal impact to the side of the SUV involved.

Car was stopped about 2 feet from wall. Foot slipped off brake allowing car to roll forward, causing it to bump wall. Air bags deployed and passenger side air bag busted windshield. Parts/service manager at our local general motors dealer removed bumper and inspected, and he saw no reason why air bags should have deployed. Also, there is no visible damage to vehicle other than air bags deploying and busted windshield. He contacted general motors and reported this. They refused to do anything about it and they also refused to send an inspector.

Passenger's side air bag inadvertent deployed while traveling at 70 mph,. Vehicle did not roll over. Dealer / manufacturer were not notified at this time. Please feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

Was traveling on highway at 55mph and vehicle hit a bump. Then, suddenly air bags deployed. Lost control of vehicle due to loss of visibility. Moved to slow lane & hit cement wall & went into a tail spin. Rear bumper was hit by another vehicle & came off. Horn failed to work when it was used. Driver received burns on right hand from passenger side air bag.

While traveling at 30 mph vehicle crashed into a tree head-on, and there was no deployment of the driver's side or passenger's side air bags. The vehicle has been totalled.

The car was traveling at a speed of about 45 or 50 when the right tires hit the edge of the road. The car ran off the road into a ditch and flipped over landing on it's top-side. The driver seat belt did not hold nor did the air bag activate. The driver was injured and is still having back problems. On December 12, 1998 I was in an accident in which I rear ended another vehicle. As I followed the other driver to a near by parking lot to evaluate the damage my air bags both driver and passenger sides went off. I believe they failed in their primary function due to the fact that they didnt inflate until about 3 to 5 minutes after the accident when we were pulling off the road. When they finally did eject and inflate the passenger side air bag cover blew out and shattered my winshield causing an additional $412 worth of damage!!! I am just glad it wasnt a serious accident because then they would of been totally useless. I truely believe that the airbags were inoperable and caused me an additional $412 in the cost of my repairs to my vehicle. I also believe that due to the fact they were not operating correctly I should be intitled to some sort of retribution. Thank you for your time and rapid response to my problem and concern!!!.

When vehicle was involved in a rear end crash, traveling at 55 mph, both air bags deployed. The hot gases from the driver's side air bag burned the driver and the passenger. The driver's right arm was burned. The passegner received burns on the chin/wrist/elbow and inside of the right arm. The vehicle has not been repaired.

When driver was involved in a extremely low speed impact crash both air bags deployed, blowng out the side windows, the sun roof and the windshield were busted. The passenger's side air bag blew up. The driver's side air bag caused damages to the driver's face and chest. The driver sustained second degree burns by air bag.

For no apparent reason while driving about 20 mph both air bags deployed. The passenger's side air bag broke the window when it deployed. The driver had minor injuries. The vehicle is at a dealership. Consumer states vehicle has been at dealer for 18 days and he still has not had any response from them.

Inadvertent driver side air bag deployment killed driver by causing loss of control. While traveling the speed limit in the center lane of the interstate the driver side air bag suddenly deployed for no apparent reason, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The car slid sideways through the median and was struck on the broadside by oncoming traffic killing the driver and injuring three occupants of the other vehicle. The car was purchased new three months earlier and had been driven less than 3000 miles. This vehicle was not in the inital recall according to consumer but did receive notification after the allegation of the front bags deployed and the driver crossed the path of traffic resulting in a crash. Accodring to the complainant, the vehicle was impacted on the passenger's side door. The driver sustained internal head trama resulting in death. It is alleged that the driver's sead hit the window or the roof. The driver was alleged to have been wearing his seat belt. Both front airbags deployed. This incident happened back in 1997. Cw.

Passenger's side airbag deployed, vehicle hit by another vehicle travelling 40 mph, hit/shattered front windshield; according to manual, normal reaction for airbag.

The passenger's side air bag deployed due to the location of the bag/it cracked the windshield. The vehicle was involved in an accident at 70 mph, running off the road, and into rocks.

Vehicle was forced into a ditch at 30 mph impact head-on in which neither driver's side nor passenger's side air bags deployed ,causing driver to go into steering wheel.
