Two issues left consumer stranded in 1999 2. 2l Chevrolet Cavalier
catastrophic failure of input shaft/input drum assembly on 3t40 transmission, left operator without any forward or reverse drive gears while drive was engaged and rolling. Managed to avoid crash. Remedy was replacement of transmission with remanufactured transmission. Incipient worsening of starting times. Poor factory ecm calibration in all or most 1999 2. 2l Cavaliers can leave operator stranded in warm starting condition. Results in poor initial running and large amount of unburned hydroarbons released to atmosphere. A technical brochure exists to remedy the situation, but no recall. Dealer wants $90 to reprogram ecm.

When key is inserted into ignition steering is locked and key will not turn. Trying to turn steering wheel does not budge it. Car is imobile and cannot be driven. This is an intermittent problem. No sure way to tell when it will occur.
First failure was at 24,197 miles. The car began to lose power and would stall during driving. Dealer had the car for 21 days, and replaced the switch clusters, ignition switch, reprogrammed body control module, replaced pcm and found burnt 3-4 clutch. At 40,613 miles the engine lost power and stalled again (while on the freeway). This time the engine warning light did not activate, and we had no idea there was another engine problem. The dealer again replaced defective coil and iginition wires. The car is once again beginnig to idle differently, which is a precursor to it stalling. At each failure, we also smelled a burning odor just before the vehicle stalling.
