3 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

I have a used 2005 chevy Cavalier and the cluster panel is not working properly. The gas gauge doesn't give me an accurate gas amount in the car and the mph works sometime, but often than not, it isn't accurate. I checked with GMC and they say there is no recall to replace it and the cost is $700, which I cannot afford on a fixed income. Can something be done. I know there have been problems with cluster panels in other GMC vehicles.

4 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 02/28/2013

I just bought a 2005 chevy Cavalier with 60k miles on it, one owner, and never missed a maintenance appointment. The car is immaculate. A few days after I purchased it the speedometer got stuck at 18mph and then dropped to 0 when parked. All other gauges work except the rpm's . . . Neither the speedometer or tachometer has moved an inch since they dropped to 0. It is a serious safety concern. I went online to try to look up what the problem may be, and instead found blogs where 1000's of people are complaining of the same issue, same story on their 05 Cavaliers. This definitely should be considered a recall! I am not sure how much this is going to cost, but it obviously is a continuous problem for most 2005 chevy Cavalier owners, and chevy should take responsibility!.

5 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/10/2012

The problem is with the speedometer. I was traveling at what I thought was about 40 mph and I looked down and my speedometer showed 65 mph. When I cam to a stop my speedometer only went down to 25 mph. The next morning it was down to 0. One week later it went up and didn't go below 35 mph and it has kept increasing. Now when I get in the car the speedometer is at 95mph. This is a huge safety issue. Please issue a recall for these items. The cost to repair is $500 and makes it too expensive for it to be feasible.

The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 270,000.

7 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

Speedometer quit working, now I have no idea how fast I'm going, can never tell if I'm speeding or going too slow. That isn't safe is it. . . . Gm needs to issue a recall to their Cavalier speedometers before someone gets hurt seriously! they also need to quit selling junk!!!!.

8 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

My 2004 chevy Cavalier speedometer quit working. This seems to be a common problem with this vehicle. A recall is in order!.

9 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 02/08/2012

The speedometer sticks and does not report accurate vehicle speed. Above a certain speed the gauge will freeze and be unusable. This happened without warning while I was driving on the highway and could easily have caused an accident. This is a known safety issue on other GMC cars from the same time period (mine is a 2004). In addition to the speedometer, the tachometer and the fuel gauge are also completely inoperable. The whole instrument cluster is defective. It is incredibly dangerous and expensive to repair, and should be covered under the same recall as the other Chevrolet products.

10 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 01/04/2012

The speedometer is not working it is all over the gauge, it freezes sometimes and other times it is pass the 120mph mark.

11 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/02/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier. While examining the vehicle the contact noticed that the instrument panel gauges were not functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the instrument panel would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was 61,000 and the failure mileage was 60,650. Updated03/15/12 the consumer stated the problem started with the gas gauge. Which started off as an intermittent problem and became worse. The gas gauge needle then started blocking the temperature gauge, which caused that needle not to work properly. The gas gauge and temperature needle were facing the steering wheel. The consumer was informed the entire instrument cluster would have to be replaced at a cost of $650 plus labor. Updated 05/30/12.

12 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 11/04/2011

It was sometime in Nov. 2011 when the speedometer stopped working for no reason. Every once in a while it will register the speed but it is not correct. I have seen a lot of complaints about this same problem with the same car model. And from what I have learned online this can be a very expensive repair. There really should be a recall on this part. All drivers need to know what their speed is in order to be safe and responsible driver.

13 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 11/01/2011

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph, the speedometer failed and would only provide a reading of zero. In addition, the temperature gauge increased abnormally. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic and a diagnostic was performed, which located the failure at the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster was replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 67,710 and the approximate current mileage was 73,000. . . . Updated 04/25/13.

14 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The speedometer began to intermittantly provide erratic indication of speed. The symptoms eventually got worse to the point that the speedometer doesn't indicate properly at all. The problem occurred at the same time the engine temperature guage wouldn't work properly. Reviewed various websites and found that this is a well know defect for Chevrolet instrument panels. The speedometer will read low causing a safety hazard when the driver tried to maintain speed.

15 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 03/03/2011

Speedometer stoped working! saftey issue!.

16 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

2004 Chevrolet Cavalier. Consumer states temp gauge looses its bearings and ends up over in the speedometer area and speedometer will not go pass 11 mph.

17 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/25/2010

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier LS with 36,531 miles on it. Yesterday, I went to drive the car and had "no speedometer" function ---------- the needle just sat on "0 mph" no matter what speed I drove. I feel that this is a major safety issue and needs to be addressed. I have also read of the many hundreds of reported failures of the same kind concerning the instrument panel in these and many other gm products built during the years 2000 through 2005. Why are the trucks/ SUV's instrument panel problems a recall and the documented problems of the Cavalier (for the same years) not a recall? it appears to me that the relative cost of each vehicle plays a part in your decision and possibly the end of the manufacturing run of Cavaliers in 2005 has skewed your judgment. I find this instrument panel problem a serious driving concern for all who share the road. I also have been in discussions with others who have experienced this problem and there is a suggestion from the gm dealers that the problems of the "old gm" are not the problems of the "new gm (2009). Since my taxes pay your salary to keep me safe (without bias) and my taxes and future earnings make me a shareholder of the old/new gm, it would appear to me that this big problem could be solved between the parties because we are all on the same side and in the same family. Shame on you for not declaring this a "recall" for the Cavalier instrument panel. I still have the car and have not had the problem repaired. I also will not allow my family to drive this vehicle any more and I am not sure I will pay the approximate $500. 00 to have it repaired. This reminds me of the lack of a recall for the 3. 4liter v-6 motor that I had in my 2003 Buick rendezvous with all of its associated problems with head and intake gaskets. . . . . I paid the $1,500. 00 to have the intake gasket replaced. . . . . . . Hope the new gm gets its act together fast. . . . . . . . As for me I will be spending my hard-earned dollars on japanese .

18 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/19/2010

I have a 2005 c avalier with a faulty guage instrument panel (cluster), faulty speedo and temp guage. I hear this is a very common problem with gm clusters. Where is the recall??its only 5 yrs old. The speedo needle goes all the way past the #s and rests at my mileage #s. My temp guage goes past all the #s.

19 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

2004 chevy Cavalier instrument panel not working correctly. Temperature gauge has flipped and is blocking my speedometer needle from reading correctly.

20 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/08/2010

Speedometer, and fuel gauge stopped working. I was told the entire instrument cluster needs to be replaced.

21 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/03/2010

I drive a 2005 chevy Cavalier and recently the speedometer and fuel gauge have stopped working. The speedometer continued to climb while I was driving on the highway this weekend, passed 110 mph and ended up pointing straight down. Today when I got in my car to go to work, not only was the speedometer broken, but the fuel gauge was pointing about 40 degrees passed the full mark. This is an extremely unsafe condition. I don't have the $500+ to spend to fix this, but cannot imagine driving without knowing my speed or whether I'm about to run out of gas. I've done some research on this, and it appears that many other Cavalier owners have experienced this same exact problem.

22 Instrument Panel problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 12/01/2010

All gauges on instrument panel quit working completely at first but now move around backwards or any direction they choose. . . Never correct!!!!! this is very dangerous!!!!!!.

23 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 11/20/2010

I have a safety issue with my 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier. My speedometer quit working and I cannot tell how fast I'm going. I was in another state when I encountered this problem and had to rely on a gps to monitor speed while driving on the interstate. I have read many on-line complaints from other owner and gm, for some unknown reasons, haven't issued a recall to fix the instrument cluster problem. I have also read that the cost to fix this problem is $800 or more. I find this unacceptable for an american car company to charge for this repair. This is a serious manufacture safety issue and should be fixed free of charge. My car has only 55,000 miles on it and it's not safe to drive.

24 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 11/03/2010

I have a 2005 chevy Cavalier that I have been having trouble with the temperature gauge reading hot when the motor is not. I've been told that the instrument panel most likely needs replaced and it's very expensive. The car has only 75,000 miles. I have been reading a lot of complaints about the panels going out of this model. Not being able to know whether the car is performing properly could pose a safety hazard driving. If the temperature gauge is reading incorrectly, I have no way of knowing whether to turn the car off or keep driving it.

25 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 10/30/2010

2005 Chevrolet Cavalier speedometer is sticking, does not read proper, at a complete stop the speedometer reads 35 miles per hour, and will not read correct speed on the highway. The car only has 30,000 miles on it.

26 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 10/16/2010

The instrument panel gauges started going out of whack. The temperature gauge needle moved all the way over to the right interfering with the speedometer needle, so that the speed does not show correctly. At first the needle went back down, but kept getting worse as time went on. The problem began about 2 weeks ago. Yesterday, I had a diagnostic test run on it and the mechanics told me the whole instrument cluster panel needed to be replaced and would cost over $500, an amount I do not have at this time.

27 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 10/06/2010

The speedometer on my 2005 chevy Cavalier stopped working. The mileage is just over 125,000 miles. The speedometer would indicate a speed of 25 mph when I was stopped. On the interstate it would show I was over 110 mph when I was with the flow of traffic. It finally went so high off the scale that it stayed stuck. I took the car to a goodyear service center and they charged me $220 to "fix" the problem. The speedometer was reading 5 miles per hour when I parked the car in my driveway after driving 3 miles home from the repair shop. It will be next week before I can get back to the shop and try to get some of my money refunded. Now I have to find a reputable repair shop that can actually handle the job and replace the defective parts in the instrument panel cluster.

28 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 09/27/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier. The contact stated that he noticed the temperature gauge seemed to move sporadically. The gauge indicated that the vehicle was hot but it was not. The gauge also became "hang up with the speedometer", according to the contact. The contact disconnected the temperature gauge. The contact planned to perform repairs himself; he purchased a motor that would be installed behind the instrument panel. The contact called the dealership who advised him to take the vehicle in for a diagnostics test. The current and failure mileages were approximately 122,000.

29 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 09/24/2010

Speedometer and tach inaccurate.

30 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

The speedometer on my 2005 Cavalier has been broken for about a month now. It usually stays around 0, but will sometimes get stuck at various incorrect speeds. I had the output sensor changed, and it made no difference. My mechanic hooked his computer up to the car and it says that nothing is wrong with it. I was told that changing the input sensor, which is inside the transmission will cost about $750 and take 11 hours to do. I have 2 mechanics looking for solutions, but they have found none so far.

31 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier. The contact stated that the instrument cluster was defective. The temperature, fuel gauge, tachometer gave incorrect readings and the needles moved back and forth. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 57,000. The failure mileage was approximately 55,000. Updated 1/25/11 updated 03/22/11.

32 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 09/04/2010

My speedometer on my 2005 chevy Cavalier sticks whenever it is cold. It'll be stuck on 40mph when im parked. It will eventually go back down only to stick again a few days later. Seems like a lot of people are having the same problem. Safety recall?? or can I just send chevy the speeding ticket because I have no idea how fast I'm going??.

33 Instrument Panel problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 08/21/2010

2003 Cavalier, the defroster knob cable has gone bad 2x's before it is gone again, the driver side window motor went last year, last month the fuel pump went, the passenger side motor is going, the speedometer is messed up along with the tack, it sticks. My daughter drives this car just turned 17, the speedometer said she was going 105, when she shuts the car off it says she's still doing 35, at times the car wont start, don't know exactly why, this is bs, there is only 72000 miles on it, gm needs to start fixing these problems, some one is going to get killed.

34 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 08/19/2010

I recently purchased a used 2005 chevy Cavalier. The speedometer does not work. The needle will move clockwise but does not go back down when I slow down--thus, by the time I park my car at my destination, the speedometer needle is basically pointing straight down. The problem gets worse the longer I drive (in one trip). I think it also gets worse the faster I go. Because of this problem, the speedometer is essentially useless. I haven't driven the car much because I recently bought it, so I am not sure how often this problem will occur.

35 Instrument Panel problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 07/16/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier. While driving approximately 45 mph, the entire instrument cluster stopped working. The failure began July 2010 when the speedometer would stop functioning. The contact called both the dealer and the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000 and the current mileage was approximately 94,000.
