4 Instrument Panel Failure problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 08/12/2011

In Aug of last year while driving approx 45 mph, the rpm gauge began jumping up into the red. It took about two weeks worth of driving for it to fail completely. Since the car is an automatic, failure of the rpm gauge was not serious concern. In mid January of this year, I noticed the gas gauge would only show 3/4 a tank after a complete, topped off fill up. Then the temp gauge showed the vehicle was beginning to run hot (195 deg). The garage replaced the thermostat ($230). After a couple of days, the temp started running hot again. I took it back for service. Then they replaced the thermostat sensor ($170) hours after picking the vehicle up the temperature gauge shot well into the red. I then took the vehicle to another service station. Who informed me that the temp is actually fine, but the abs sensors needed replaced ($285)(with no warning light indication from the panel). I have also been informed that the whole instrument panel is bad and needs replaced of which I can not afford to do. The vehicle has now failed state inspection due to the faulty instrument panel. The Chevrolet dealer service dept, claims that the panel failing, is very common, and gm refuses to do anything about it.

10 Instrument Panel Failure problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Carcomplaints. Com notes: widespread instrument panel failure is a common and frustrating reality for many 2004-2005 chevy Cavalier owners. They're often left in the dark when it comes to knowing how fast they're going, what their engine temperature is, or even how much fuel they have left in the tank. The likely culprit is a series of bad "stepper motors" which control the gauges and are no longer covered under warranty. Think not being able to see your speed is a safety issue and should be recalled for all owners? we'd agree. Trouble is, apparently the NHTSA does not. This is truly a serious safety issue. This issue has been reported thousands of times to various agencies and it seems the Cavalier was never made. No one will address this issue or any others involving this Cavalier.

11 Instrument Panel Failure problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

The instrument panel speedometer and thermostat gauge are not working correctly, but are giving erroneous readings. The instrument panel has failed for the second time. The car was purchased in 2003 and the first instrument panel one was replaced about three-years later for the same problem. The cost to us then was about $500.
