The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier. The contact stated that the fuel gauge did not provide accurate readings. The contact also stated that the speedometer would get stuck on various speeds and display inaccurate readings as well. The speedometer would get stuck displaying a speed of 20 mph, 60 mph, 80 mph and 110 mph. In addition, the fuel gauge failure would occur during cold weather and display readings of empty when fuel was present in the fuel tank. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 50,000 and the current mileage was 58,000.

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier. While driving approximately 65-70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. He was able to maneuver the vehicle off the roadway and after waiting 15-20 minutes, he as able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken for diagnosis or repairs. The failure occurred intermittently for one year. In addition, the contact stated there was an abnormal gasoline odor emitting from the vehicle. He was able to locate a recall for the failure under NHTSA campaign id number: 07e021000 (fuel system, other: storage: tank assembly: pressure relief devices) but did not confirm if his vehicle was included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 123,000 and the current mileage was 133,000.

I have a 2003 chevy Cavalier with 53,000 miles on it, I have always changed the fuel filters, never let the fuel go under 1/4 tank. One day I was driving, and the car died with no alert. I lost all power, power steering, power assisted brakes, everything in the middle of the road going 60 mph with traffic all around me. I could not press the brakes hard enough to stop the vehicle so I activated my 4-way flashers and coasted off to the side of the road and used my emergency brake to completely stop. I was 10 miles away from my home so I had the vehicle towed to my house until I could figure out what to do with it, that tow bill was $120. 00. I am unable to drive to work and loosing about $100 a day and now I will have to tow the vehicle to a repair shop because of this faulty part and spend approximately $900 on a problem that I have read occurs more often than it should.

My 1999 chevy Cavalier's fuel gauge just stopped working out of the blue. It reads that the fuel tank is full and doesn't drop. We didn't know that this had occurred until my car ran out of fuel on a 4-lane highway while sitting at stop light. We were almost got rear ended by approaching high-speed traffic multiple times, and we were forced to leave my vehicle in the middle of the road to get to safety. Luckily my husband was able to push the danged car off of the roadway/intersection once a passerby stopped behind us and and turned his hazzard flashers on. The nice gentleman also got out of his vehicle and helped my husband push the car off of the roadway. Thank god for good samaritans! the fuel gauge never leaves "full". After talking to a dealer and several auto shops, we decided it made more sense to go by the odometer from now on, which is a gigantic inconvenience. This decision was made based upon the rediculously high cost for repair, along with the fact that most mechanic's told us that the fix would only be temporary, as fuel gauge failures across the board is a well-known common general motors product problem, and that a fuel gauge failure will likely rear it's ugly head again sooner or later.

The service engine light appeared on my 2003 Cavalier. I took it to walker Chevrolet in franklin, TN and they performed a smoke and visual test. All tests indicated a leaking gasoline tank. The gas tank was replaced at a local garage and the mechanic noted a crack was formed at the seam area of the gasoline tank.
2003 Chevrolet Cavalier giving off fumes first time I filled it to the top with gasoline. That eventually set off a check engine light on the dash. I used my obd2 scanner and it was a code for a high evap leak. It was too difficult to find the leak at my home, so I had the dealership do a smoke test and revealed a crack at the seams of the gas tank. Dealership said no recall for that make and model. Estimate for replacement and labor was $1,000. I found a salvage yard gas tank from a low mileage Oldsmobile alero and the local repair shop replaced it. Mechanic mentioned it is a common occurrence to find a crack at the seams of a newer gm small car with a plastic gas tank. I reset the check engine light code myself and the problem never reappeared.
When driving today at about 50 mph, my car just stalled. I had to have it towed and the tow truck driver said to pound on the gas tank. After trying to start my car again and nothing I decided to pound on the gas tank with a rubber mallet. After doing this the car started and ran for about a minute and died again. I decided to go online and read some forums, which directed me to this site to complain about this problem. Apparently it happens often. The car is a 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier with about 90,000 miles.

The contact stated she there was a crack in gas tank. If the contact filled the tank 3/4 full the tank leaked. The mechanic said it was a crack in the top of the tank. She noticed this a while back. She always kept tank full. But when gas prices went up excessively she could not afford to fill it up. When gas prices went down, the contact filled it up again, and that was when the tank started to leak. Had not hit anything that would have caused a crack.

At 30,000 miles I was driving up a hill with half a tank of gas, my caviler died. Towed to the servicce center and the fuel system needed to be replaced. At 45,000 miles the transmission was making noise, a grinding noise, took it in and chevolet put in a brand new transmission. It was out of warrenty so cost me alot! for a new car this is really upsetting. Most recently June, 2003 the transmission was leaking in two places, took it in again and chevolet kept it for 5 days, couldnt diagnoise the leak, assumed it was bolts on the frame of the transmission that needed replacement. Waiting now fo rthe next problem. Very unhappy with this vehicle.
Transmission rattle/noise; replaced transmission fluid, did not fix problem; gm service would not write up defect after 1st attempt: clutch assembly clutch pedal failed to release; 1st attempt was to replace clutch cyclinder line assembly, 2nd attempt was to replace clutch assembly slave cyclinder, 3rd attempt, replaced pressure plate, 4th attempt could not reproduce failure, fuel level sensor defective, replaced it and sender. Dt.
The gas cylinder is being corroded by the sulfur in the gasoline, the gas gauge will read that there is gas and then the vehicle will just stop without any warning.

Defective fuel tank was leaking which may cause a fire if there is a source of ignition. Dealer said that he shouldnt fill up the tank. Dealer is replacing the fuel tank. Please provide further information.
While driving a rental vehicle fuel tank, made of plastic, was punctured, causing fuel to leak out. Vehicle was towed to dealership. Garage was filled with gas fumes. Fuel tank was punctured by road debris and replaced.
I peviously called this in but just received it thru the mail and it was not correct. What happened was I was driving the car about 7 minutes, it was very low on gas I have never let it get that low before, the road curved then came to a stop sign when I did stop the light that said "check gages" came on, I looked the only gage that was low was the gas I had to drive about 2-4 more minutes to the gas station. I pulled it stopped, turned off car, got out my credit card "texaco" put it in the slot, waited for it to approve, pulled out pump, pressed button, uncapped my gas tank, put in pump and pressed the handle so it would pump automatically, went to drivers side of car put my credit card back in my purse, came back around to pump and started to hold the handle down so it would pump faster, all the sudden flames started coming out of the gas tank, I yanked out pumped and moved away. The employees at the station came out and put the fire out with fire extinguishers. The police showed up but did not ask any questions except was that my car and was I alright. The fire department came out and looked around I guess to make sure that all the fire was put out, they did make a remark about possibly the gas tank was not grounded, which could of caused it to get very hot because it was low on gas. But again they did not have a forensic mechanic with them to look over the car, so that was more or less a "guess" on their part. I then finally got a hold of a tow truck so that they could tow my car to the dealership. The reference no. For the previous questionaire that was mailed to me is 831265.

While filling the gas tank and the check engine light is on, the vehicle caught on fire in the fuel tank, which caused injuries. Cause unknown. Dealer said no faulty parts. Please provide further information.
While driving low on gas and the engine check light came on, causing the consumer to go the gas station. While the consumer put the pump into the tank, there were fumes coming from the gas tank, and the fire department came out to put out the fire.
The fuel tank gauge does not give a proper reading. When it is on 1/4 full, gauge indicates that the tank is empty. More than seven incidents happened. The dealer attemped to fix, and now there is no warranty. Also, the dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

When car fuel tank is reading below 1/4 tank, car will not start. Car backfires, while trying to start and check engine light comes on. I have been fighting with this since I [urchased the car in 1997. Everytime that I take the car in, I am being told it is always something different. This item definately needs to be looked at cuase I have been told by numerous chevy cavelier owners are having this same problem.
