I was driving and had been in my car for about five min and smoke started coming out of the bottem of where the radio and heater controls are. . At that time I pulled over and saw flames in the dash and it was growing and I called 911 fire and we closed the doors and waited til the fire truck got there and handeled the fire. It completly destroyed my dash steering column front windshield and head liner. . . All my instrument panels and wiring are fried. I believe it was a faulty wiring system. . . If not would like to know how this could have been prevented and how do I fix my car. .

1. ) leaking battery (acid) caused the electrical harness at the conector under the battery to become deteriated (corroded). 2. ) this affected the headlights by cutting off the electrical current and shutting off the headlight. A night time failure could have been very dangerous. 3. )I took the vehicle to a repair station and paid $300. 00 to have the problem fixed. The harness was not replaced, only patched because a harness replacement would have been too costly for me.

Battery terminal leaked, and since a lot of wiring is located under the battery, the acid ate the wires that go to the headlights, turn signals, and running lights. My highbeams work, and my drivers side turn signal work. Warranty wont cover, they said it was the battery. Why have wiring under the battery?.

I wish I knew about your web site sooner because of all the problems ive encountered with gm. In June of 2001, my 1997 Chevrolet, Cavalier caught on fire while parked and not running. The fire dept. Arson investigator said it was caused by an electrical short in the steering column area. I spoke to several representatives at gm and finaly received a letter in the mail which states that " general motors is unable to assume responsibility for any damages. " "investigation revealed no evidence to support the product allegation". This incident has actually hurt my family financially and emotionally. My daughter thinks that we need to keep trading in cars before they blow up. My credit report has a bad mark on it because I had to buy another car and coulnt afford to pay off the rest of the loan. . Chevrolet would do nothing to assist or answer my questions. By the way my Chevrolet product allegation number is c 04792963.

The Cavalier was driven to work by my daughter on 11-09-98. She parked the car and locked it and went to work at the after school day care for the ymca. About 5 minutes later, a parent entered and asked who owned the Cavalier because smoke was coming from it's engine. By the time my daughter ran outside the car had burst into flames. The school custodians tried to put the fire out with fire extinguishers but they were only successful in putting out the flames that ran from my car to 2 others. The fire department was called and they determined that the fire started in the engine due to either faulty electrical or gas lines. I have contacted gm and they have had their inspector look at the car on 11-16-98. Since the inspector looked at the car, their customer service representative jenny yurenka will not return my phone calls. A receptionist informed me that it will take gm another 14 days to determine what to do with a car that bursts into flames for no apparent reasons.
While vehicle was parked for two hours a fire ignited in steering column cause unknown. Please give any further details.
