The power steering light came on and became hard to steer. Luckily I was able to pull over and stop as there was no one else on the highway at the time. I've there was a recall on the part but when I called the dealer they seem to think they have already fixed the problem but I will bring it in tomorrow. After reading all the stories about this model its a wonder gm has done nothing about it. I will have to pay almost 100 dollare for them to just look at the car. Lords only knows what its going to take for them to attempt to repair it for good. I'm not really sure its worth fixing but who can just go out and buy a new car because gm sold junk in the first place.

After starting the Cobalt or even if I am driving down the interstate at 70 mph, the t/c lights, brake lights, power steering lights all light up on the dash. The speedometer and rpm gauges start going crazy. The radio will also go in and out. Usually on the interstate, the car will continue to drive, which is very scary. But if I am in town or slowing down to stop, the car will cut off. Then after I crank it again and start to move, the transmission changes gears really rough and feels like it is going to fall out. The only thing I have found to fix this (after weeks at different dealerships) is to turn the car off and flip the key on and off several(20 plus) times.
Loss of power steering, mutiple warning lights appeared. Recall was done 1/24/11. Loss of power steering and warning lights August 3, 2011. Dealer unable to find problem. Loss of power steering and warning lights August 31. Again, dealer unable to find problem.
I took my car to a chevy dealer for safety recall 10023 after I was driving home from work and I heard beeping and the 'power steering' appeared in the console. Once the power steering light came on, the gears had a slamming sound and the car would only drive 10 mph at max speed. The day I picked it up, the same thing happened a mile away from the dealer but this time I heard the clicking sound the brake will make when you take the car out of park, shook the entire car when the gears shifted, drove only 10 mph and felt like it would stall if I came to a complete stop. I pulled it over in a parking lot and immediately had it towed back to the dealer who, the next day after looking at the car again, told me he could find nothing wrong with the car. Fed up with this dealer, I took it to a local garage to have it inspected, again nothing. I do not feel safe driving this car at all now. I don't understand how there can be so many persistent problems with this car, yet no mechanics can say there is an issue. The power steering light should only come on when there is a serious problem, and for one to not be detected is very frustrating. I have been without a car for nearly 2 weeks now and have gotten no closer to feeling safe with me or my family inside of it.

I recently had power steering problems with my 05 chevy Cobalt. I went to premier dealership in brooklyn CT to have the recall done after experiencing problems my power steering. The power steering light would go on and would be hard to turn my wheel, engine light on and car security light went on. After the recall was performed today my car ran smoothly and those lights did not go on. However according to the dealership I still needed a whole power steering column replaced. . . And the charge was 805 to do the whole job. To "look" at the supposed other problem costs me 113. 00. Now the recall was supposedly "free" for me.
Received recall notice for my 2005 Cobalt sedan(71,000 miles), in March of 2010. The recall was related to the electric power steering unit. The electric motor thought to be the problem was replaced free of charge by local dealer, no problems with steering up to that point. Just recently(Aug 2010), I started experiencing problems with the steering. The power steering light would flash on and ding. The car would immediately lose power and the door locks would lock and unlock by themselves. It was as though a switch had been thrown. And then it would go away. The local dealer that troubleshoot the problem charged me $55 and said there was an electrical short triggering error problems within the steering column modules. I asked if it was related to the problems they had with the steering electric motors and he said this was another unrelated issue. Sure. So I called a reputable local mechanic and explained my problem. He said he has replaced several steering column units at a cost of $900 a pop. I can see why gm's parts and labor guys love this. He also said the entire column is faulty and they all should be replaced. Of course nothing will happen until a congressman's relative gets badly hurt or killed. I am surprised that the NHTSA has not followed up on the original recall fix as that was only the tip of the iceberg for a much bigger problem. I understand there are several thousand people experiencing steering issues that can be severe at times.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While the contact was traveling at a speed of 60 mph he noticed that the power steering light had appeared on the dashboard and at the same moment the vehicle suddenly became very difficult to steer. The dealership was contacted and informed the contact that NHTSA recall 10v073000 was not official and no repairs could be made on his vehicle. The vehicle had not been diagnosed and the failure has occurred on 6 different occasions. The failure mileage was at 45800 and the current mileage is 47800.
We own a 2005 chevy Cobalt and the problem is the power steering light comes on while going down the road and the steering locks up and you can't steer the car. This is a very dangerous situation and just wandering what can be done about it. I have also heard that there have been many others with the same problem from the Cobalts, wondering why chevy has not done anything about it? thanks.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While traveling at approximately 20 mph, the driver noticed the power steering indicator light illuminated on the warning panel immediately followed by a loss of power steering assist. The driver shut off the engine and upon restarting, the power steering assist would reset itself. Within minutes, the failure would occur again. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic was performed. The dealer verified the power steering as well as another unknown part had failed. Repairs were made to the vehicle at the owners expense. There were no recalls on the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 57,500 and the current was 58,000.
The power steering is failing on my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. I will be driving, a chime sounds, the power steering light comes on and I have no power steering. I have to turn the car off, then back on to reset it. I will then have power steering for a short distance before it happens again.

2005 chevy Cobalt. . . Power steering light came on and I lost all steering control. . . I have a 14 month old son who was in the back seat at the time. . . This has happened to me 4 times in the past two days. Very concerned for mine and my family's safety with this problem.

He was able to pull over, turn the vehicle off and then on. At 300 yards the vehicles power steering locked again and the duplicate failure recurred. Power steering light comes on, power steering goes out, all display lights begin going off and on, speedometer needles go crazy, clicking noise in dash, car sputters when stopping and jerks real hard when beginning to resume driving after stopping. All of these things happen at the same time, not always just off and on, never know when its going to happen. Had recall on power steering assist motor, had that replaced at 70,558 miles, starting having same problems again. Had steering column, shaft and link replaced at 73,117 miles. Car seemed ok for about a month and then again at 73,900 miles same problems are happening again. Contacted gm, was told the recall was done so anything else that happens now is my responsibility. Have seen 100's of other comments from colbalt owners having the same problem with vehicle and gm. There is obviously more of a problem with these vehicles than just the power steering assist motor. Something more should be looked into and done with this issue. It is and or can be a very dangerous problem when occurring (steering going out at anytime) like I've seen on many comments from others, does someone have to die before something is done about this problem? gm states that this vehicle has a 5 star safety rating but yet they don't want to fix a problem as serious as this. I like many others can't afford to keep fixing this problem just to keep having it re-occurr. I had to pay out $950 a month ago and like I said before am now having the same problems. I had to borrow money to have the first repairs done and have no way to have it done this time (can't afford it) so now again like I've seen many others comment I have no choice but to drive around in a vehicle thats steering could and will go out at anytime. If there is anything I can do to find out or have done to fix this problem, please let me know. A very concerned and scared driver. Thank you!.

I can be driving down the road at any rate of speed, and the power steering warning light will come on & chime, by the time the chime stops the power steering has gone out. I can stop the car, turn it off, turn it back on and it fixes the problem for about 2-5 minutes then the situation repeats itself. It happens constantly to the point the car is almost not drivable. It has progressively gotten worse over time.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While the contact was driving 20 mph she noticed that the power steering warning light displayed on the dashboard. However, moments later there was a loss of power steering. The vehicle was taken to the dealership in which there was a replacement of the power steering motor. There were no prior warnings. The power steering warning light appeared & w/in minutes the power steering failed. Restarting the car reset it, but now it will only work for a couple of minutes before going out again. I was told I needed to replace power steering column. This car has been a headache since the beginning w/ one defect after another. I have not been notified of any recalls since I purchased it new in Jan 2005. The problem has not been fixed as it is not in our budget at $1200. 00.
I was driving my 2005 chevy Cobalt home and without notice or warning my power steering light came on and the power steering failed. I was unable to turn the corner immediately after this incident. I pulled over to the side of the road and turned the car off. I had my husband meet me and he assumed it was the power steering belt. Upon inspecting the car, he determined it wasn't the belt and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. We drove the car home and it sat for approximately 1 week. I drove the car less than 10 miles and it the same thing happened. I again pulled over and turned the car off and restarted it. The power steering was fine and I continued to drive it home. I went approximately another 5 miles and the power steering went out again. Each time the steering fails, I immediately turn the car off and re-start it. I also hear a "click" sound immediately prior to the power steering going out. I have not been able to have this car fixed due to the financial situation and I do not feel comfortable selling the car to someone else. The car has 112,000 miles on the odometer.
I have a 2005 chevy Cobalt. I have had my powersteering light come on, and I cant steer the car very well. I have also had many numerous electrical problems. I have taken it to the dealership 2-3 times & they always tell me there is nothing wrong. But, I am not imagining this, and it happens repeatedly. There has been times where I haven't been able to drive the car. Also, when it happened while driving I almost lost control while turning.
My son was driving his 2005 chevy Cobalt (less than 25000 miles) at 55 mph when the power steering warning light alerted him of the power system failure. He was able to safely stop the vehicle. The day after the event, the vehicle was taken to keddie Chevrolet for evaluation. A day later they replaced the power steering motor to the tune of $302. 10. Guess who ended up paying the bill? us.
My vehicle has had multiple issues gas tank replaced sensors replaced, cd player is always locking up, cds get stuck, vehicle vibration issues never fixed and a rotating noise along with road noise never fixed. Current would be the power steering which works for about five seconds giving me enough time to get out of my parking spot, then a power steering warning lights up and the steering wheel gets stiff and is really hard to turn. I have contacted gm and a dealer both have denied to fix the problem. It is very hard to park reversing into a parking is impossible.
2005 chevy Cobalt power steering quits constantly while driving and becomes very hard to steer off road. First power steering lights comes on and immediately you loose power steering must pull off road shut down wait several minutes then restart and power steering comes back only for several miles then continues to do the same.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated while driving at 60 mph the power steering light would flash and the power steering would go off on the vehicle. The contact has to turn off the vehicle and then restart it for the power steering to work again. This happens while the vehicle is making turns as well. The manufacturer informed the contact that since their is not a recall the manufacturer is not responsible for the repairs. The contact feels a recall should be issue regarding the power steering. Failure mileage was 106,000.
