7 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/10/2017

The vehicle can mess up from either driving down the highway or trying to accelerate the vehicle on city street or highway that the engine stalls and says "engine power reduced" the check engine light along with the t/c light comes on. It happens multiple times in just 30 minutes of driving, more for longer trips. It will even do it in 10 minutes of driving. You have to pull over and turn vehicle off for a few minutes and then it drives fine for maybe a mile down the road before it does it again, or, you can continue driving it with the pedal all the way to the floor board trying to get speed which if you do the car shifts gear very badly and rides rough but when you're trying to get to work on time you do what you have too. I have taken the vehicle to a mechanic 3 times over this. Throttle body was changed (twice), they replaced the computer and cleaned the wires. One mechanic was the Chevrolet dealership and they told me they needed it there when it happened to better diagnose the situation. I do not have the ability to let them just keep my vehicle. I have had this vehicle for a little over a year. I bought it used. I have a loan on the vehicle and I am scared to drive this any further than I have to because I know the vehicle will mess up. I have two children that I have to put in this vehicle to take places. This vehicle is extremely unsafe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want help with this situation!! this first happened in November of 2016. I do not know the day specifically. I do remember it did not fall under the dealerships warranty that I got it from.

8 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/21/2017

Coolant is not reading, air conditioner don't work and check engine light comes on. It will stay like this for a day or so then by the time I get it into the shop it starts to read again and the check engine light goes out air conditioner will work again and there are no codes to read. Repair shop can't find anything wrong. They said possible thermostat issue or sensor issue but without codes or check engine light on they have no idea. It keeps doing it but it seems to correct it self before I can get it back to the garage usually over a weekend when they are closed or very busy. I have had this issue for a couple months now, it has not appeared to cause any over heating or made any other sounds that I am aware of.

15 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/01/2015

I had ignition switch recall work performed on my car. Following that, or perhaps due to increased mileage, I began having power problems with my Cobalt. On 10/19/15 my car was parked, wouldn't start and check engine light was on. Then it started but didn't have enough power to move/run. I had to have it towed - mileage was 131,982 at the time. Battery was good. The shop said it had po300 codes - random misfires. They found cylinders 2 and 3 were not contributing power due to a bad ignition module. So the ignition module was replaced. I also had worn spark plugs replaced, as the shop recommended I do so. The car still had misfire codes and would hesitate when re-accelerating after stops, so I paid for a new fuel filter at the repair shop's recommendation. The hesitation continued but I couldn't afford further diagnostics/repairs. Within a couple of weeks of repair my car lost complete power while I was driving in traffic. Luckily, other drivers had time/space to react, but it could have caused a deadly accident. Due to finances, my brother checked the car for me and cleaned the throttle body - the only issue he could detect. It has run a bit better since then, but still exhibits hesitation after stops. I worry it may lose complete power again but I cant afford incurring further expense with trial and error repairs. Especially after reading online other Cobalt owners are having the same experience, and have been unable to get resolution despite multiple expensive trips to mechanics. I feel Chevrolet needs to investigate the electrical/power loss issues with Cobalts and cover needed repairs under a recall so Cobalt owners can drive with peace of mind. I'm submitting this complaint now because of a recent nbc news program where a young woman died when her Cobalt lost power in traffic, and this also occurred following the ignition switch recall work being done.

16 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/20/2015

While driving on nys I-90, my 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt LS 2010 went into "engine power reduced" and I was not able to drive over 40 mph. I pulled off to the shoulder and waited for about 10 minutes. I started back up, check engine light remained on and car stays in limp mode. The vehicle now idles rough, accelerates slow when at red lights and stop signs and bucks when shifting gears. First at 10 mph (hard buck) than (lighter buck) at 20 mph, and continues lighter through acceleration. Codes that are coming up are p0107 engine (map) barometric pressure circuit - low input, p0452 engine (evaporative emission system pressure system pressure sensor - switch low input, p0532 engine ac pressure sensor a - circuit low, and p0641 engine (sensor reference voltage a) circuit/open. I was able to clear out all codes except for p0641 (permanent). Please help.

17 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/07/2015

I was on my way to work and my check engine light came on. I went to have a diagnostic test done on it and the reason for the light coming on was because my throttle body senser had gone out. 19 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/22/2014

While driving on the route 20 at about 50mph it started to rain and all of a sudden my car "reduced engine power" light went on. My car started slowing down and I had to turn to the closest street so that I wasn't hit by the car behind me. This has happened before, last year while on the highway driving to cleveland, my car began rapidly slowing down and I couldn't pick up speed while pressing the gas. I took the nearest exit and had to wait two hours before the engine light would turn off. Also, while the check engine light is on, it also says "traction off" and my car shakes. Both times it was raining, and I was driving at 50mpr speeds.

20 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

I was driving on a highway at 65 mph and the traction control light and check engine light on the dashboard came on and when I had to accelerate then the car started shifting really roughly. I was half way to my destination and then the traction control light went off and the car shifted smoothly on acceleration. The check engine light stayed lit but the car seem to run fine. When I got home I researched the issue and found that there was over 1800 complaints about this same issue. My car is now parked because I thinks its not reliable. I think this should be, yet, another recall for the Cobalt.

21 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/05/2014

The first time this particular problem began, because there have been OH so many others, I turned on the car and a power steering messaged appeared. There was no check engine light or anything else, just the "power steering" message. This happened intermittently for about 2 months. Then one evening while accelerating from a stop light, the car started to hop, the "power steering" message came on with a dinging alarm, the car slowed down to about 5 mph, and the power steering was gone, along with the breaks. It was extremely difficult to turn or stop the car. We were able to get it off the road, where we turned the engine off and on a few times. Each time with no success in fixing the issue. Finally after letting it rest for about 15 min, we were able to turn it on and it returned to normal. Since then, intermittently the "power steering" message comes on and dings, the car hops, and the power steering goes out. I took it to the dealer and they said the steering column needs to be replaced at a cost of $800. I can't understand this, since my steering column has rarely been move, maybe a total of 30 since I bought the car in 2006. I am the original owner and very few people, outside of myself, have driven this car, lending to minimal adjusting of the steering column.

23 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

At approximately 7:47am cst on August 7th 2014, I was making a right hand turn when the engine and all electrical components died. I was able to restart the car and safely drive, with no check engine lights/other dash warnings, approximately half a mile back home. There was no warning on the dash (ie check engine light) before the massive failure occurred; it was instantly dead. This fits the characterization of the ignition switch failure in the affected gm models. I was one turn from merging on the freeway. Had this incident occurred a minute later, the potential for severe injury/loss of life was great. I have been waiting on a list since April to get the defected ignition switch repaired. I have called several times for updates, and have been told up to 800 people were ahead of me for repairs. When I reported this incident to gm via the ignition switch recall hotline, they suddenly found the parts needed to repair my car. This is suspect to me. They are also claiming that this incident was not ignition switch related, but the fact remains that this was a near-miss incident with potential catastrophic implications that fits all descriptions of ignition switch failures. I have followed the instructions by gm to drive with only the key in the ignition and to avoid bumpy roads, but this incidents has made me feel extremely unsafe to drive this car. Gm is not treating this defect in the ignition switch as seriously as it needs to, as the possibility for severe injury/loss of light is great. There is no warning that power will be lost. I do not feel safe driving this car knowing that gm knew about this defect for over a decade and is insisting that cars with the defect are safe to drive.

24 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/23/2014

While driving my 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt home after leaving work, I was entering onto the thruway when my check engine light activated, my dashboard reader said, "engine power reduced", the car then lost acceleration, started to buck and shake. I quickly pulled to the side of the road and let the car sit for 15 minutes. Upon start up, I put the car into drive, it bucked into gear and I proceeded with caution not doing more than 30-35 mph. I went to advanced auto parts and ran their free obdii diagnostic reader. The code that came back was po641 - engine control module - port #3. The check engine light cleared out after 2 days. The car runs fine now. Very concerned though.

31 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/20/2012

For no apparent reason and without any warning (no check engine light or anything), I received an "engine power reduced" warning and my car's engine completely shut down while I was completing a turn in a busy intersection. Luckily, I was able to coast to safety and park in a nearby parking lot. The car refused to turn back on for several minutes. Once it did, I drove my car to my office and was able to start it and drive it without further incident for several weeks. Then, without warning it happened again while I was on the freeway and has been happening intermittently since then. When I took it to the dealership, they claimed they are not aware of other people having this problem, but I have found numerous complaints and reports from other owners online, so I'm not convinced of their honesty or concern regarding this matter. They say they *think* the problem might be the master computer or at least that is their "best guess" (their words, not mine). I will be replacing it later this week. Unfortunately, I'm not confident the repair will fix the problem. After gm's repeated and explicit denial of the power steering problem and how long it took them to admit there even was one, I have decided to appeal to you. At present, when driving this car, I am a danger to myself and everyone else who might be around me on the road. . . As are all other Cobalt drivers. Please, investigate this matter before someone has this happen at the wrong place and the wrong time and someone gets seriously hurt, or worse. Gm knows it created a car with a faulty electrical system which could result in catastrophic failures and they need to take responsibility for it and fix it. Just because they stopped making the car, does not absolve their responsibility to make them safe for everyone on the road.

33 Check Engine Light On problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/01/2012

The first incident happen in 2012 and caused a crash. I was driving down the street and needed to stop at a red light and put my foot to the floor on the brakes and it did not stop me. I could not move the steering wheel either so I could not avoid hitting the lady in front of me. Luckily, I was not going very fast and everyone was okay. While exchanging insurance information, I noticed my keys were in the floor board of my vehicle. I didn't think anything of it, because when it came out of the shop it seemed just fine. Then, I was on the freeway on my way to work in 2013 and my knee bumped my key ring and they fell to the floor. I could not slow down or switch lanes. I got a speeding ticket. Then in November, 2013, the same thing happened as the first time which caused a wreck. I could not stop at a red light and rear ended a vehicle in front of me. I was barely moving whatsoever though, so I got lucky again. Recently, my check engine light came on and I took it to the autovbody shop in town and had to pay 800 dollars to get the timing chain replaced. I have had nothing but issues with that car and now I find out that many recalls have been issued on the vehicle and I have not been notified of a single one. Apparently gm was supposed to notify owners with their registration information. My registration just came up for renewal as of may 1st and I have not been notified or instructed what to do. It has gotten to the point now where I duct tape my key so that it will not come out while I am driving. I limit my driving to necessity travel because I am too afraid that something else, possibly worse, than what has already happened thus far.
