3 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/12/2019

2006 chevy Cobalt. After coming to a stop ,at a stop sign, for example, steering wheel locks, engine shuts off, key sometimes sticks in the ignition lock, occurs randomly and with out warning. Car will restart and behave normally. Dealer replaced ignition switch under recall in late 2014. Went to dealer service department for help with sticking ignition switch. Currently dealer refuses to reinspect ignition switch with out agreement to diagnostic charge. Contacted gm customer service. Gm admits there is a extended warranty until 2020 for the ignition switch {warranty letter 14632) customer service rep further indicated that any parts replaced have a 1 year warranty only. And my ignition switch is past parts warranty. Gm customer service stated that the dealer is within there rights to demand a diagnostic fee if the dealer determines the problem is not the ignition switch. We indicated to the gm customer service that the ignition switch is locking up again. Its was my understanding that gm feels that the recall repair is a one time event. Gm refuses to look at the ignition switch again unless I agree to pay for diagnostics regardless of any safety issues involved.

4 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/29/2017

Vehicle wouldn't start. Like the battery was dead, wouldn't even try to turn over. Go to turn the key off and pop my trunk where the battery is located and I can not get my key to turn all the way back to the off position, as a result I cannot remove my key. The speedometer read 30mph even though the vehicle never started and wasn't moving. Non of the electronics were working so I was unable to pop my trunk. This has happened several times before and eventually the vehicle will start and when it does the battery light stays on and the dash reads; engine performance low. The transmission will surge as I am driving and I cannot go faster than 30mph. I have even had the car shut off completly while I was driving down the road. After anywhere between a few hours to a few weeks the vehicle will stop acting up and drive normal for a while. Agian the normal lasts anywhere between a few hours to a few months as well. The power stering also flashes on the dash and sometimes cuts compleatly out.

5 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/26/2016

I was driving home this morning and a deer jumped out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and the engine shutoff. Making the power brakes and steering shutoff. Extremely dangerous not to mention if there is no power most likely the airbags will not deploy. A serious issue for a car that is less than 6 years old with around 80,000 miles on it. Just a disclaimer it is an automatic so there is no clutch.

8 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 02/24/2014

On two occasions my Cobalt just shut off, once sitting in traffic the other while merging onto the interstate, I have also got service airbag lights blinking random during the same time frame. Dealer is telling me my car isn't included in recall, how can this be?.

9 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/26/2014

Car has shut off twice in the past 4-5 weeks. It happens on rough road. Engine dies and car shuts off. Car has to be restarted. This is a safety issue on the road. Recall has been noted on media and newspaper article for 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. These incidents when car shuts off actually happened before I seen the recall on the news. When I called Chevrolet to report issue I was told I would need to wait for recall letter before I could get the repair done. I feel that due to safety issue and my car actually having this problem that I should not wait until April for recall letter. I was told recall letters would not go out until April 2014. This same problem also happened to my Cobalt last year on 3-4 occasions during winter months when roads are more rough. Gm's number for initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion recall. I do not want to pay out of pocket for the repairs. I am reporting this due to safety issue on the road. Need this car for work!.

10 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/29/2013

I was driving the car at about 32 mph when the engine shut down. I traveled across four lanes hitting the curb head on then hitting a concrete flower bed( approximate hit 12-14 inches), traveling over this again hitting a curb in a parking lot and then the car came to a rest. The airbags did not deploy and the car was not running. This is not the first time the car has stopped running like this. When I first purchased it in February 0f 2006 within the first week the ignition would not turn over requiring a trip to the dealership. The ignition has been replaced at least 5 times. About three months into owing it I was driving down the road and the engine was trying to restart it self. It then stopped and I ended up in a ditch. Again the airbags did not deploy. Finally, in 2012 a school bus backed into the front of the car with it running and the airbags did not deploy. The igniton was replaced on 6/04/2014 under the mandatory recall. Within 3 days the ignition once again would not turn on and then when it did the engine dragged as if the battery was bad. The battery is one year old. I have had this problem non-stop since the replacement part. I called graff Chevrolet in mt. Pleasant and I got the standard response, "we can"t duplicate it". When I insisted the car needed to be looked at I was told, we have the right to refuse service and we can no longer service your car". I've called other dealerships only to be told the car needs to go back to where the recall part was replaced.

11 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/23/2013

The vehicle shuts off while running. I've stopped at stop lights and when I try to continue driving the car will shut totally off while in drive. The door locks are constantly running up and down and will not stay locked. Many times I've come back to the car thinking it was locked to find it unlocked itself. The electrical problem has created a problem with brand new batteries. I've replaced it twice since purchasing the car in 2010.

12 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/15/2013

My Cobalt, which is now totaled, was in a highway accident and the car malfunctioned. The front end of the car collided into the rear end of pickup truck and then went out of control and the left side of the car smashed into the concrete guardrail. At some point during the crash, the car shut off and the airbags never deployed. When the car finally stopped, my fiancé was unable to turn it back on and had to push it off the busy highway before someone else hit the car.

13 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

The throttle body becomes extremely 'gunked up,' causing the engine to shut off if the rpms drop too fast. It happens most often when coming up to stop lights. However, the most dangerous time (which caused me to get rear ended due to not being able to immediately speed up) is when I switch lanes on the highway. I let my car slow down by removing my foot from the pedal, switch lanes, and when I put my foot on the pedal, I don't speed up. Why?? because the engine shut off when I first removed my foot from the pedal and let the rpms drop!.

14 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 03/26/2012

My car shut off while driving out of a parking lot a couple of days ago. Everything shut down. I couldn't even brake. I was able to put the gear in park and restart it just fine. However this is the fourth time this has happened. The last time being on the george washington bridge. The very first time was 2 months after I purchased this car. I assumed it was because I went over a speed bump that was larger than normal. The second time I went over a pothole. The third time was on the highway. So I had a mechanic look at it and he stated that I could be the alternator. This was about 2-3yrs after purchase. However my time was very limited. I live in MD but I work in new york so I spend a lot of time there and leave my car at home. So I haven't had a chance to get it fixed. With this last incident I decided to search the internet and it turns out that I am not the only one with this issue. I found it funny that there were many others with the same or similar problem. I put in a search for "cobalt shutting off while driving" and found a couple of sites describing similar issues. This last incident reminded me of how dangerous this could be. I had my 4 yr old niece in the backseat and the exit of the parking lot was on a hill. Feeling the car rolling back and not being able to brake would surely be considered a safety issue. On a side note I did have my car examined for the recall I was given notice about. This was completed last year. Nothing abnormal was reported.

15 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/29/2011

December 29, 2011, I was driving home one evening in the Cobalt when my car's engine shut off and I lost control on a semi-residential a few blocks from home. Driving at about 35-45 mp, downhill, I hit a parked car on the left side of the road (narrow road, cars parked on both sides, 2-way street). I thought, "I'm going to die". This impact made the car continue on, faster and more out of control, hitting another parked vehicle on the opposite side of the street and I finally was able to stop the car by hitting the passenger side front wheel/bumper of the Cobalt against the a parked truck to avoid driving into an intersection or any oncoming traffic. No airbags ever deployed. The car then flipped over, and that's how they found and recovered me. I awoke hours later in shock trauma at washington hospital center in DC (where I worked at the time), with the car totaled and just a scratch on my hand. I just had aches/pains, no broken bones, but had to take some time off work. I had no health insurance as I was a contracted employee. Car insurance paid off the expense of vehicle. Thank god nobody was killed nor seriously injured. I have all paperwork, photos but I still don't drive, maybe just once a week. The year of the Cobalt is from 2009, but I believe this vehicle should be included in the class action suit, as it was completely unsafe to drive.

16 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 08/10/2009

My daughter drives a 2005 Cobalt. On 8-10-2009 she was driving on a two lane road with a speed limit of 55 mph when her car shutoff and she lost steering ability. She crossed the oncoming lane on a blind curve and stopped in a driveway. If there had been a car coming toward her in the oncoming lane she would have been severely injured at a minimum. The Chevrolet dealer said he had never had never seen that happen. The dealer replaced the ecm and put the pcm caused a short.

17 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

When traveling over 30-35 mph, and braking hard (locking up the tires), the engine shuts off. Which results in a loss of power steering, power brakes, etc. I was traveling on a snow covered road and wanted to know how the car handled. While going straight at about 35 mph on icy road, I applied the brakes to lock up the tires. The car continued straight ahead (good). I let off the breaks, at which point I noticed the car was not running. I notified the dealer- could not recreate, the second time I demonstrated it for them. They were able to recreate it on another car. This happened during the winter of 2009-2010.

18 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving between 65-70 mph, the vehicle completely shut down without warning. Also, the power steering shuts off without warning. 19 Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 09/24/2005

(1) there have been no problems with the car (2005 chevy Cobalt sedan) until 9/24/05. The car stalled once this morning and then completely shut down without warning. Both events happened after he took his foot off the accelerator so he could slow down and exit the freeway. No warning lights came on. (2) my husband thought he was going to die. He could not steer the car, the brake pedal went mushy, and the entire system shut down. There were no cars around him so he just slid until the car stopped on its own in some bushes. (3) he got to a phone and we called roadside assistance, they towed the car to the dealership.
