1 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

While driving all the light on instrument panel will all light up then the transmission will shift hard. The car will not crank at times and when this happens its a guarantee the transmission will shift hard. The evap sensor is faulting because when I put fuel in the vehicle seems like it does not want to crank. The evap problem does not seem to be related to a possible computer malfunction. We have had the fuel pump replaced by a local licensed mechanic.

2 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/27/2017

The dash message says power steering. As I was excellerating in the on ramp of the highway, the rpm jumped up to 6,000 all on its own and now it will not shift gears, does not read any mph, and can barely go more than 20mph. This was unexpected and had no warnings prior to. Although it still functions (turns on, runs, has all power available, has reverse) it is ultimately disabled. Also, the fuel lines/ fuel pump failed causing a gas leak, making it a challenge to start the vehicle. I have patched the fuel line as a temporary fix. I have already replaced the lower control arms and the timing chains at my own expense.

Failure Date: 02/11/2015

Power steering went out while I was driving at a speed of 45 mph. I checked fuse and it was blown. I then but new fuse in and started car. The second I started the car the fuse blew again. The strang thing was that even tho the fues had blown the power steering continued to work until the car was shut off. Also my radio started changing stations by itself and airbag warning came across the dash then a couple days after that started I went to start the car and it wouldn't. Radio, outside lights and blinkers, interior lights, and dash lights would all still work, but it seemed that no power was getting to the starter nor the fule pump. At this time the car still won't start.

I just found out there was a recall on the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt due to failure with the electric power steering assist motor / system. As I looked it up I found 2 additional recalls which Chevrolet was supposed to contact me on all 3. I was not contacted, and do not know if my car has had the repairs done prior to me purchasing the vehicle in January 2011. The 2 other recalls are as follows. Shifter cable problem with car not in proper gear, clip on cable, if not installed properly, Chevrolet is supposed to replace the entire cable. Also, a fuel leakage can occur, causing a fire, due to a plastic supply and/or return port breakage on the fuel pump module.

9 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/05/2013

I was driving my chevy Cobalt on Tuesday around 25 mph when something popped up saying power steering, the steering wheel got completely hard and I couldn't turn it. Almost got into a car accident while making a left. Next day, nothing happened. A day after, it started with the problem again. Took my car to the mechanic and he told me that it might be that the pump went bad. This is outrageous and really scary. Gm has to do something about it considering I am not the first one to complain about this.

11 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/18/2011

Power steering stops working and then starts working sometimes when driving. Power steering pump was changed by Chevrolet dealer in March, 2011. By may, 2011, same problem of power steering working eratically resumed. Dealer looked at it again on 9/30/11 and was unable to fix. On October 18, 2011, a near accident occurred when the power steering started working during a sharp turn at 25 mph while entering an on ramp. The force it takes to turn the wheel at that speed is estimated at 30 lbs and while applying that force in the sharp turn and the power steering suddenly started working, resulting in my making a significant turn to the right and almost running off the ramp and down a 15' embankment. The vehicle is too hazardous to drive.

12 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 06/02/2010

The steering wheel locks, while I am driving and happened to almost collide into a passing vehicle on the lane next to me. It happens within 5-10 min. After I turn on the chevy Cobalt 2007. It occurs every single time I intend to drive the vehicle. The vehicle is not in use for I have small children and I am afraid an accident will occur. I have not yet changed the part but the mechanic at the Chevrolet dealership said it was the motor for the steering wheel pump. I will be changing the part and I will hold on to the factory part.

13 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 05/24/2010

My car was running and getting warmed up, then suddenly the locks start going off and on, repeatedly. It has continued to do this and the car will not stay locked. It does this whether it is off or on now. It is constant. The power locks no longer work and you can't use the door handle to unlock the car from the inside, you must manually pull the lock "up" and to lock the car you must manually push all the door lock nobs down, but that doesn't matter because it will not stay locked. In addition to this electrical issue the front speakers go off and on at random. Also, the turn signal remains on even after the full turn has been made. The car will randomly shut off while it's being driven. It doesn't matter if you are going 70 mph or 20 mph. Also the power steering went out on my car, that was recalled and has since been replaced, but the steering still malfunctions. My car was leaking fuel the summer of 2012, after the fuel pump module was replaced the gas tank had to be replaced months later because the car continued to leak gasoline. There are many other countless issues with this car. I am surprised and fortunate that there haven't been any injuries or fatalities while operating this death trap. I will never purchase another gm.

14 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 02/06/2010

Two an a half years ago my vehicle started to just turn off randomly while driving, it started about every 4-5 months then about a year ago it started happening about twice a month. I brought my vehicle to the shop and they stated that the problem was the fuel pump. It was replaced since then. I have not had a problem with the vehicle turning off in the middle of me driving. Now February 6, 2010 I was driving and the power steering randomly went out. Sometimes if I turn my car off and restart it will have power steering again sometimes it does not help. This has been occurring for 2 days now and it happened yesterday 3 times and today 3 times. I was driving through the mountains and almost caused a couple of collisions because of this. I plan on going to the shop tomorrow and I will keep any parts they replace.

15 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/11/2010

Electric power steering pump and modular in a 2005 chevy Cobalt. The power steering has started locking up at times and then comes back. Took it to the dealer and they said that the electric pump and modular needs to be replaced this has happened to a large number of these cars. It is very unsafe and can cause a serious accident or the result of someone getting seriously hurt or killed. We purchased this car for our daughter thinking that this was a safe car for her to drive to school and work. But this is very unsafe because the steering can lock up and leave her with no steering. We think gm should be made to recall this problem because they know how many cars this has happened to and it is very unsafe.

~dear sir/MA'am~ hello. My name is jennifer nelson. I drive a 2005 chevy Cobalt. I love the car, but there is a problem and I don't know who to contact. I hope this is the right place. I do not know a lot about cars, but as I was driving to work yesterday and I tried to get in the turning lane but not knowing my power steering pump had just stopped working for some reason and I almost smashed into the back end of a semi and I was going 45mph. I contacted the place I bought my car from (gateway Chevrolet-fargo , nd ), and they said they will only fix it if I get into an accident of some sort. All I have is the power train warranty left for coverage, and that doesn't cover the power steering. The car is only at 55,478 miles and they will only help me if I get into an accident? that is not right. I don't care who you are, that is not right. My husband actually was looking online today and it is a common thing in chevy Cobalts. There has been at least one fatality from the power steering not working in another victims Cobalt, yet they still have not put out a recall on it. I don't understand. Do I have to die before this gets fixed? I paid more than I should have for this car to begin with. . . And they will not help me unless I crash the car? that makes no sense. Please help me! I am scared to drive and this is the only car I have. Please please help me! you can call my cell phone with any questions or you can reach me at home after 5:30pm cst. Please help me with this. 20 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/15/2009

I knew ever since I purchased the vehicle with 29,000 miles that there was a problem with the power steering motor on my 2007 chevy Cobalt. During a driving test, my daughter couldn't turn the wheel. The motor overheated. We took it to a auto shop and they said the motor will continue to do it because of the way it was made and there was nothing he could do but that I should complain to chevy. One day in November 2009, it overheated and I couldn't turn the wheel which caused me to run up a curb. My tire was damaged and I had to be towed to a repair shop. It cost me 50. 00 for the tow and around 200. 00 for a new tire, wheel alignment and labor. The mechanic said it is a bad design, that they should've removed the motor and replaced it with a traditional pump. He said that will be the only way to correct the problem. It overheats daily and it is impossible to steer-especially for a small female. Chevy should have to replace these motors before someone gets killed.

21 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 11/07/2009

Electric powering steering pump.

22 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/20/2009

I have a 2007 chevy Cobalt, and at around 45,000 miles the power steering simply went out while I was going down the road. The cab was filled with a burning smell, and the vehicle became nearly impossible to turn. I pulled over and turned the car off. I waited about 3 minutes and restarted the car and the power steering was working again. I began driving again, and made it about two or three more blocks when it went out again, and again the car was filled with a burning smell. I contacted a chevy dealer who told me there was a service bulletin out saying that the whole steering column needed to be replaced due to a faulty power assist motor. This starts at around $2500. I did some research online and found that hundreds. . Maybe thousands of people were having the same problem with the same car. Many had paid the $2,000-$2,500 to have this motor replaced only to have the same problem reoccur weeks later. So, I have yet to have it fixed. Today I got a recall notice for a fuel pump on this car, but chevy still refuses to correct the faulty power assist motor which acts as the power steering. Its only a matter of time before someone losing steering on a major highway and deaths occur. As for my chevy Cobalt. . Its parked in my driveway until I can finish paying it off, and then I'll be calling a junkyard to come get it. Just a thought. . . But its amazing how for any other product. . A dishwasher. . . A child's toy. . If a company sells a faulty product, you can take it back to the store and get your money back legally. . . If its a car, you're stuck.

23 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/02/2009

I own a 2006 chevy Cobalt LS that I purchase used from a chevy dealer with 70,000 miles here in miami. While driving my chevy Cobalt, I attempted to make a right turn and my power steering stopped working and I almost crash my vehicle into a pole gladly there was nobody standing or other vehicle near the incident. It has now become an repeated incident meaning that is happening frequently. When the temperature out side gets to cold or too hot it stop working. It also makes a bee noise. I check thru the website review other chevy Cobalt owners problem and they advice to remove the 60 amp fuse and place it back and it temporary correct the problem until it does it again. I took it to the dealer and they says that I have to replace the hold steering unit which over $1000 dollars which I do not have. I find out that the vehicle has a electronic steering gear instead of a hydraulic pump. I have done a research and find out that I am not the only person owning a chevy Cobalt that is having the same problem. I research thru you website and several people already report the same problem. It is a safety hazard and a chevy problem. Please I'm requesting that you guys investigate this problem further since is not an isolated problem. If you need to contact me please feel free. 27 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 07/10/2009

Bought 2007 chevy Cobalt used from a local car dealer last March, went on a family trip to the smoky mountains and while going through the mountains power steering goes completely out. Stopped at the visitor center and my father tries to see what is wrong. He cant find the power steering pump/fluid because we didn't know it was electronic. The problem persisted through out the trip but as we got back the problem seemed to stop, then a few weeks later the power steering constantly goes out. This problem occurs every time I drive my car, it has made driving an annoying task and I have come close to multiple collisions during the failure. This has also caused me physical pain in both my wrist and elbow while trying to turn my car. Nothing has been done to correct this due to lack of finance and my research on the topic said it costs around $4000 to correct.

I hate to think what would have happened if she had not remained calm when this happened after getting car fixed she was afraid to drive it for a while. 30 Power Steering Pump problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/25/2009

Recently purchased a 2005 chevy Cobalt. Three months later in January while driving, the power steering went out. Pulled in a store parking lot, shopped fifteen minutes, started the car and had power steering. This happened again seven days later. I took it in to my mechanic who said it was an electronic power steering pump and shutting down was a safety feature if it over heats. It happened a few times during the summer and again around December. This can happen no matter what the temperature. I went online and found out it could cost thousands to replace the whole system.
