Vehicle developed at rattling noise in the steering column when driving over rough road surfaces. I believe it is related to a plastic gear inside the column that others on the internet have described. Recently it has developed into a very loud rattle accompanied by a loud knocking noise that is heard and felt in the steering wheel only when braking moderately. Light or heavy braking seem to not cause this, so far. I am concerned that the problem may eventually result in the failure completely of the steering column. This would result in the inability for the electronic power steering motor to assist in turning the wheel, and thus the loss of control of the car. Or I am afraid it could result in the complete loss of steering all together.

Steering is not working especially a slower speeds. Very hard to turn at times and is making sort of grinding noise or clunking noise when attempting to steer the vehicle. This is very unsafe and am concerned that the steering may fail all together. Have seen many Cobalt's recalled for steering defects. I looked up my VIN #, but it is not listed for recall. How can this issue be addressed so that my 2010 colbalt is included in the recall. This is serious. Thank you.

I have to drive the car to work everyday around 50 miles everyday. I have had all this work done the the car I have tried to get general motors to help with the problem which after all this work the car shakes and makes very loud noises on the steering wheel. I called a general motors helper last week who was supposed to get me some information and have not been contacted back yet. I have to have the car to go to and from work, is it going to take the car being wreaked and me and or another person on the freeway to be killed before anybody takes this problem seriously? this problem is all over the internet so I am not just trying to say it is just me. I have spent all money I had put back trying to get this car safe on the freeway, I bought the car from rodney cobb in eaton, ohio and was hoping general motors would take this seriously but I guess not so I am hoping and praying to get some help from the government. Please I need help and I cannot afford to pay anymore or get rid of the car. General motors and rodney cobb Chevrolet will not help me on my own I have tried, they expect me to pay money for a faulty car that I cannot afford, so I am asking you to please help. . . . Thank you.
The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt which was purchased brand new. The contact heard a noise in the steering column while the technician test drove the vehicle at approximately 10 to 15 mph. The technician confirmed that the steering column and linkage needed to be replaced at the contacts expense for $942. 00. The steering column remained locked after the vehicle was repaired. The technician stated that the wheels must remain straight at all times in order for the ignition to be engaged. A representative with the manufacturer stated that he would call the contact within twenty four hours to follow up on the defect and reimbursement; however, no one has notified him. The contact was offered a partial reimbursement on the steering column repair which he denied. The failure mileage was 35,520.
When turning left or right it makes a clunking noise from the steering column.

I noticed a slight tapping/rattling noise coming from the front driver side. The noise only occurs between the speeds of 50-60 mph and only when letting off the gas completely. Then I received in the mail an ignition cylinder recall. My car had problems with locking up and difficulties turning the key. So I took the car to the dealership told them about the noise I was hearing then waited a week with no call from the dealership so I called them. They told me my car would be finished by noon, I arrived at 4 pm. They then told me my car was not yet finished. The dealership had not even put in the new ignition cylinder even after a week. I was told the noise could not be replicated. I waited for the ignition to be put in (about 30 mins) then took one of the dealership mechanics on a test drive to hear the noise. Noise was heard and took it back to the shop. Checked under the car and nothing wrong could be found. The lead mechanic took it for a test drive but due to the heavy downpour of rain nothing was heard. I was asked to bring the car back on Monday due to possible severity of the situation. Dropped the car back off at the dealership Monday. A test drive and a look under the car and they found the problem, noise coming from rack and pinion while hitting bumps rack worn and needs replacement steering column making noise as well recommend replacement with out replacement the car would eventually have no steering ability at all: cost $1524 no warranty. This car has had the power steering recall replacement (the steering wheel suddenly stopped working while in a parking lot due to broken pinion) in 2010 and a transmission issue (rpm rev when the car hit 40 when the gas was not being applied) that was a worn seal it was fixed and covered by warranty in 2011. This would be the twice now with no steering ability only its a different cause? I feel like I'm being cheated.
Car is pulling to the left and had car alignment done and new tires put on. Still pulling to the left and hear rattling noise in the steering column when turning to the left and when speed at 50 mph. It also rattles when I slow down to stop. This is not safe for me or my family. This should be recalled immediately. Took car to mechanic diagnosis is the steering column. Production error. I am not going to be paying high cost for something that should be recalled and fault of a production error.

I purchased the car brand new in 2007. The front suspension started to make lots of clunking noises and rattling whenever I went over bumps in the road. It continued to get workse. Took the car into the chevy dealer and they said nothing was wrong with the car. Ive taken the car to a mechanic and he replaced l front control arm twice. The mechanic said the car should not be having those problems with the cars current mileage. I also have very dangerous sound in steering column evry time I turn the steering wheel. I have complained about this to dealership. Of course, they initially did not hear anything. I had my steering lock on me and couldnt get the key out, thus I had the car towed to the dealership in April 2011. They fixed the igntition switch. The noise in the steering column has only got worse since that time. December 16, 2o14, I took car in for the recall on the igntition. The dealer told me that the steering column was falling apart and wanted to charge me $1100. 00 to fix. They insisted that this has nothing to do with the ignitition switch. The car sounds like it is barely holding together like on squeaky hinges.
A gear somewhere within the steering column is cheaply made and ware's out. There is slack between the teeth on the gear's. In result as you go over small bumps and big there is a clunk noise from the steering column. As well as the car does not track straight down the road because of the slack in the gear teeth the tires slightly wobble as driving because the steering wheel is not controlling the tires for the amount of slack between the gap in the gear teeth. I believe this needs to be a safety recall based on the severity of being a steering issue, and as a result, loss of steering could be possible if the gears completely strip out. It is not an uncommon problem, considering almost everyone who owns a Cobalt experience's this same exact problem. Please look into this. Chevy refuses to recognize!!!.

Feb 03, 2010 purchased a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt from pape chev. S. Portland , maine. Can hear power steering rubbing noise upon turning at low speeds. Mileage only 660. Now I hear there is a pending recall for this vehicle? does the dealer have to exchange for another model. .
My power steering went out. There was a clicking noise and then my power steering was gone completely. . That was the first time and the second time my power steering went out on me after the dealership put a new power steering column on it. The second time my two year old son was with me and it was dark on our way home for the day. Luckily I got to the side of the road without incident. This time I had my power steering motor replaced. Very irritated with this car. My trust is gone.
I have a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt and I am having a problem with my power steering. It is often hard to turn the steering wheel and I hear a rattling noise in the steering chamber while I am making turns. Also, the power steering malfunctioned as I was driving which caused my steering wheel not to move at all. Fortunately I was not near other cars and was able to stop the car and turn it off in time. I re-started the car and the power steering must have reset itself and began working again.
I own a 2006 chevy Cobalt when driving my power steering stop operating making it hard to turn or operate. We were able to make it home and after restarting the car the problem did not happen again. But when steering the steering makes noises.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The driver stated that after driving a long distance at approximately 45 mph the vehicle made a clanking noise and the steering wheel failed to operate normally. The dealer has not diagnosed the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.
1. ) I first heard an unusual clunking noise in the front of my 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. I took it in to the local gm dealer and was informed that I needed my front end control bushings replaced. Upon successful replacement of said parts - which solved the clunking problem - I immediately began to hear a rattling noise coming from the steering column of my vehicle upon driving over any uneven surface (gravel roads, snow/ice covered roads, etc). 2. ) a couple of weeks after the replacement of the control arm bushings, the rattling noise grew worse, and I also noticed the steering pulling much harder than usual when turning at speeds of 5-15 mph. 3. ) I took the vehicle back into the local gm dealer to explain the problem after I concluded some personal research of what could be causing the problem. I informed the dealer that I had been informed of a power steering failure and possible steering column problems with this particular model/year, and requested that they look into any cause that may be influencing said problem. The dealer informed me that the rattling was simply a problem inside the dashboard, and to come back later in the spring so he could take a look at it (there was a foot of snow on the ground at the time). He also said that the problem "was not that serious. ".
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that the power steering failed on several occasions while driving 40 mph. There was a beeping noise and the power steering indicator illuminated indicating that the power steering was lost. The contact shut the engine off and restarted the vehicle. After restarting the vehicle, within a few miles, the power steering failed again. The contact has not taken the vehicle to a dealer for a diagnostic test. The failure mileage was 47,000.
I gave a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt to my daughter, bought the car second hand @ approximately 40,000km it now has approx 55,000 km. When I bought the car I asked the dealer for a maintenance print out and there was no reference to steering issues. Twice since last November the steering locks on her while driving, she describes it as very hard to steer, rattling noise and jerking in the steering. Teh first time she pulled off the hwy and drove home on the shoulder, she called me up to describe the problem, I thought it might be power steering fluid only to find out it is electronic system. Both times I called the dealer but he was not really offering any sollution, he only told me he was aware that it had occured on other Cobalts and it could cost up to $2000 to repair. Today I saw on the internet that gm was under investigation for hundreds of crashes due to this problem. . . . Do they have a solution for this problem and if they do what is my recourse. . . I am concerned for the safety of my daughter.
I had the steering column replaced on my car on Feb. 2009 because it was making a rattling noise in the steering area. They said it was replaced and the car was still under factory warranty so I didn't have to pay anything. In may of 2009 I went back and told them that I was still hearing the same rattling noise and since the car didn't have warranty they said they wouldn't be able to fix it and that I had to take it to the dealer that I purchased the extended warranty from. They also said that if it was the same part that needed replacing that they would replace it for free. Well for reasons I wasn't able to go that day. Well on oct. 4, 2009 the car shut down on me as I was making a right turn and wasn't able to steer the car. I put the car on park and turned it on again and it worked. I'm thinking what if this would've happened to me on the interstate, I could've been in a very big accident so I consider myself lucky. The problem I'm having now is that chevy don't want to replace the same part and I'm very frustrated. I have read on the internet that there are a lot of owners of chevy Cobalts that are having the same steering problems as myself and I think something needs to be done quickly.
We purchased the car new on 12/1/08. Mileage 75 miles. We've taken the car to three dealerships with a complaint of noise in the steering column. It was determined a lower bearing in the steering column was faulty and the steering column was replaced. To date the steering column has been replaced 7 times because of the faulty lower bearing and g. M. Says there isn't a fix for it. I'm concerned this could be a safety issue as it's a faulty steering column bearing and if it seizes I would assume it could cause a crash/wreck since steering would apparently no longer be an option.
I own a 2006 Cobalt which I leased new in 2006 and in the past 8 months I have had the power steering go on my car 4 times. All four times was during parking the vehicle. I have been teaching my 16 year old daughter how to parallell park and this is when the incidents happened. All of a sudden I could not steer the car and this would last up to 10 minutes and then it would start working properly when not turning the wheel so much. I was told there was nothing wrong with the car. Since this happened to me, I keep hearing about alot of other people with the same problem. This concerns me very much as the times it happened to me I was fortunate that I have not been in an accident or injured but there is no guarantees the next time I may be as fortunate. Also at times the steering makes creaking noises when taking sharp turns. . . This concerns me greatly and I do not feel safe drining this car anymore.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that when she drove approximately 6 mph over a bump in the road there was a clanking noise in the steering wheel. While driving the steering also failed and the warning lights illuminated. The contact had to drive onto the emergency lane, turn the vehicle on and off so that it would reset itself. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the diagnostic fee was $105; although, the warranty was valid. The failure mileage was 71,000.
