My power steering went out on my 2006 chevy Cobalt while driving in a parking lot. This resulting in an increased difficulty steering at low speeds. I took it to a local Chevrolet dealership for repair and although they replaced the power steering motor, which was under a recall, they also need to replace the whole steering column assembly since it too was damaged, as replacing the motor did not fix the issue. The dealership could not confirm or deny that the issue of loss of power steering being the result of the motor failing or the steering column failing. They also could not confirm or deny if it was the motor failing that caused the failure in the column to need replaced as well. If it was indeed not the motor that failed and instead the steering column failing due to manufacturer error does that not produce a similar issue of safety as the failing of the motor (which is currently recalled).

These cars are notorious for the electrical steering mechanisms to fail, parts break inside of the steering column making rattling sounds constantly while driving, my master mechanic father couldn't even figure out how to fix it, the stability is wobbly, hard to keep in a strait line while driving. These model year vehicles are terrible and needs to be part of the gm recall pertaining to the electrical steering. Look at any Cobalt complaint forum, its insane, these cars are dangerous and have had nothing but problems since I bought the car.
Vehicle was recalled around 2010 for steering and fixed. Since then numerous electical failures, power brakes, and steering failures have happened. Vehicle has been in dealer and numerous other shops over the years for same problems. Chevy dealer (kerry Chevrolet in alexandria kentucky), where car was bought kept saying they did not know what was wrong. Even after hundreds of dollars spent to fix, problems eventually came back ( electrical failure, gauges fluttering, radio flashing, steering lock, power brake failure). This past weekend, gauges started fluttering, steering locked up while driving and car went into a spin running off the road. Chevrolet dealer has always passed all these things off as not their problem. I would like any info on what can be done about this. We are now afraid to have vehicle fixed again and drive it fearing steering may lock while driving at a faster speed. At least this power failure happened at a low speed and no one in the other lane during spin. Next time might not be so lucky. Please give us any info on what can be done. Thank you.

Bought the car on 08/03/2011 with 40,933 miles on it. The steering column was defective at the time of purchase (found out after the fact). Had that repaired at local chevy dealership between 8/13/2011 and 8/16/2011(I can't find the receipt for the mileage at time of repair). On 8/18/2011, recall replaced steering motor failed. The only reason we made it home without a wreck was that we were exiting the heavily traffic urban area heading for our rural home. Am currently refusing to drive the car again and seeking resolution tomorrow morning. It is my opinion that the steering in this vehicle will never be reliable. Total of 3 steering fails on this car in 41,581 total miles.
Steering column is making loud noise and causes rattling when on gravel or slowing down to stop. Had power steering motor replace as p[er recall. Concerned that this will cause the steering to fail. Will this be a recall item? if I pay to have it fixed and it is recalled will they have to reimburse me for my costs? the car is a 2009 Cobalt.

While driving in the right lane on taconic pkwy in new york the steering failed on my mother's chevy 2005 Cobalt on may 13, 2010. She felt a loss of power over all and could not steer to keep the car on the curved road - car went off the road into the woods and crashed head on into a tree. Passenger was 81 year old woman. Ems/fire had to cut her out of the car and she was taken to st. Francis hospital in poughkeepsie where she was in the ic unit for days. It was hours before she could even speak to advise doctors to send for her family. She suffered from broken ribs, crushed chest, dislocated shoulder, facial and body wounds. The car was recalled the month prior but chevy dealer (yonkers) advised they had not gotten the ok from gm to pay for the repair (steering) on 2005 chevy Cobalts. Gm knew of this steering problem for years - even when the recall was official the chevy dealer would not make the repair. Gm is responsible for this. My mother was injured badly and nearly killed. I have called this dealer more than once since the may 13, 2010 accident and the last call in June they were still stating they did not get word from gm to pay for the steering defect on the chevy 2005 Cobalt!!! something needs to be done when there is a recall and the dealers refuse to make the repairs. The chevy 2005 Cobalt should have been recalled in 2006 or 2007 not April of 2010. I will do everything in my power to work with NHTSA to investigate this matter. I am respectfully asking for help from NHTSA to have one of their engineers check the crashed (totaled) remains of my mothers car. I have not signed title over. Please help me with this.
