On 3/5/10 at about 4pm I was traveling east bound on route 280 near newark exit. I was in the fast lane of a 3 lane highway. The middle lane was empty so I pulled into middle lane. A red pick up truck in the far right lane (slow lane) pulled into the middle lane. I assume I may have been in his blind spot. I had to pull back into the left lane. Car locked up & I could not stop it from going left. I hit the cement barrier along shoulder. The witnesses all told me they could not understand why my car did not stop. Itjust seemed to keep going left for no reason. I've heard through the news that chevy is issuing recalls for failed power steering in Cobalt 2010. I've had this car 6 weeks and now its totaled. I could not pull it out of going left & it seems since it was 50 degrees that this was a steering failure. I was treated at the scene for abrasions & swelling to the face & arm. My neck & back are sore. I got a black eye from air bag. Nj state trooper wrote a report.

The power steering on my 2006 chevy Cobalt has failed 3 times in the past 2 weeks. The first 2 times, I was just pulling into my driveway after driving about 60 miles when the steering failed. The car chimed, the dashboard display read "power steering," and the car instantly became difficult to maneuver. Both times, the failure occurred just after or during a sharp turn after a long drive. The most recent failure, today, happened while driving in a straight line, at low speed, after only 20 miles of driving. When the car is restarted, the steering becomes fully functional again. However, I am worried that it will fail again at a critical moment. I cannot predict when it will happen next.

We bought it new and was having trouble with steering wheel locking up they said there was no defect now we are having trouble with the powersteering failing and we bought the steering column kit(385. 06) and had it installed and it still is doing the same thing, when it goes out it is hard to control the car.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that the steering column failed. While driving approximately 25 mph and making a turn the steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact turned the vehicle on and off so that the steering wheel would reset itself. The gm manufacturer was contacted and stated that the parts have been ordered. The failure mileage was 47,000.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving approximately 35 mph and making a left turn, the steering failed which caused the contact to crash into a curb and a telephone pole. The vehicle was damaged; however, there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer does not want to diagnose the vehicle since they do not think that the steering was related to the failure. The contact called gm and was advised that someone would return her call. The failure mileage was 29,800.
Steering failure. The vehicle's electrical power steering goes out very often.

2005 chevy Cobalt steering failure,27450 klms on car, said steering column needs replacing . Replaced column still steering failed ,and now need to replace what I believe to be steering motor or switch.
2005 chevy Cobalt this car has powersteering failure. The powersteering will fail on what seems to be only 10 yards down the road. It will reset if the car is turned off and then back on. But only to fail 10 yards down the road again. Before it wasn't as often as it is now. Driving it is a risk because of the effort it takes to control the steering.
Powersteering failure on my Cobalt. I will be driving and all of a sudden it locks on me and I have a difficult time controlling the car. My friend has the same vehicle same year and it happens to her too. I looked it up and it is about 2000. 00 to replace, there are many other reports of this happening to other people. Please help.
My girlfriend bought an 05 chevy Cobalt from a local dealership that inspected the car 15 minutes before we drove it off the lot. 25 hours later as my girlfriend is exiting the highway, slowing down from 55 mph. The powersteering fails on her and sends her into the guard rail doing about 40-45. I have been pn forums and have found an obscured amount of the same complaints. Something really needs to be done about these Cobalts before someone dies. Luckily she was only knocked around a little and wasn't seriously injured.

2006 chevy Cobalt steering failed taking a sharp turn causing car to cross centerline hitting another car head on, son suffered a very bad broken leg requiring a rod from knee to ankle.
Electronic steering failure on 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. Started in oct 2009 power steering does not work: this happens daily after you drive it a mile or so. I replaced the electronic steering in Nov 2009 the car drove fine until Jan. 2010 now the second electronic steering has gone out also. I still have the original electronic steering column, we nee a recall on this because I changed the part once and I can not afford to do it again. Also, this is very dangerous! .
My Chevrolet Cobalt 2006 was purchased used at a kia dealership in July 2008. On Friday, 9/4/09, as I was driving back from the mall with my four-year-old daughter in the car, the dashboard display flashed powersteering and my powersteering failed immediately. The car has just over 70,000 on it. The dealer said it will be $800 to fix. Should a steering column really fail this quickly for the amount of money I'm paying for this car?!.
2005 Chevrolet blue 4 d sdn complete steering failure caused control failure while operating vehicle. The following actions occurred simultaneously; audible alarm, power steering message displayed on dashboard led screen indicating inoperable, steering failure. Replacement of steering column asm, intermediate steering shaft performed by keddie Chevrolet, inc. Route 56 west, 200 Lincoln Ave. Vandergrift, pennsylvania 15690; 724. 567. 5683; total cost of replacement = $866. 36.
The power assist in the steering system fails without warning while driving making steering extremely difficult if not impossible. This happened to me while I was turning left ahead of oncoming traffic and I was unable to hold a tight radius that would allow me to clear the intersection properly.
I am reporting about chevy Cobalts powersteering problems. My car is a 2005 chevy Cobalt. Last year at 33000 miles the powersteering failed and when I took it to chevy they said this was a problem with several others. I was required to pay 2000+ dollars to resolve the problem. I could not afford and so I ignored the problem which disappeared on its own for almost 10 months. Now its back again. My car has less than 390000 miles now. As I goggled the problem, I came across so many other people with a similar problem with the same model same year. Isn't this a manufacturers problem? requesting investigation on the problem.
I own a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. It currently has 63,000 miles on it. The electronic steering system has been randomly shutting off. When the steering system fails, I am left with no control whatsoever. I never know when the system will shut down. This makes driving on the highway especially dangerous.
Steering failure in the Chevrolet Cobalt. I was driving and the power steering went out. Took car in to the Chevrolet dealers services department, I was told that it was the intermediate steering shaft, I was told that this part was replaced but when they test drove the car they found the steering to be impossible to turn. They released the car back to us without solving the problem. I find this to be troubling since this is their product. This is a very serious problem and gm should be liable for this problem. There should a recall on the steering column in the Cobalt, before someone is killed.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact drove over a pothole and the rear passenger side wheel bent abnormally. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic and the mechanic replaced the wheel. Later, the failure occurred again when the contact drove over another pothole. The vehicle was again, taken to a local mechanic and the bent wheel was replaced. The contact stated that on a later date, the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the front vertical bushing on both front lower control arms were replaced as well as both end links for the front sway bar. In addition, the contact stated that the steering shaft and column assembly would also need replacing. He called the manufacturer and they advised him that they could not assist with the cost of the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired for the steering failures. The failure mileage was 40,862 and the current mileage was 58,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. While driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle resisted unexpectedly while making a turn. The driver exerted greater effort to turn the steering wheel. The power steering warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The driver pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and turned off the engine. The vehicle was restarted after a few moments and resumed normal operation. The failure occurs without warning whenever the vehicle is in motion. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing and they stated that the steering motor failed. The repair part was unavailable. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 52,051.
2005 chevy. Cobalt electric power steering unit in steering column failed while driving. This failure occurred at 40,222 miles and happened about 15x . Absolutely no steering was possible, and this happened in traffic, once the vehicle was turned off I had steering again, then within seconds I would get the message power steering and the steering would be gone again. The cost to repair was $849. 00 and only gm has the part. From the information on the internet, this is a defect with the part, and gm has known about it since fall of 2005. The shop manager at hudiburg chevy. Was not aware of any problems but when he asked his ticket writer, he acknowledged he has seen alot of this problem with this model vehicle.
Re:2005 chevy Cobalt- power steering goes out and reverts to manual steering at random intervals. This is a safety issue as steering problem could happen on an icy turn or in heavy traffic on a four-lane highway, etc. There is no advanced warning that the steering will fail making it difficult to steer unexpectedly. The dealer suggests a new steering column replacement at $800. 00 . We have found technical service bulletins (TSB)regarding this ongoing problem with the '05 Cobalts although no official recall has been announced tbs reference no 070232007 and 070235004. Dealer maintains there is no recall. This is , in my opinion, an "accident waiting to happen".
I purchased a new Chevrolet Cobalt LS (4 door) in 2005 from my local dealer. I drive it very little - it now has slightly less than 13,200 miles. Last week when driving near home I rec'd a sudden flashing message on the dash "power steering. " immediately, the steering failed completely. It took all my strength to turn the vehicle and I was only going 20 miles per hour - had it been different - and as I've since found it this has occurred thousands of times to other drivers of this car - it cold have killed me. My local dealer told me that the entire steering mechanism had to be replaced - rather odd for a car, perfectly maintained, with so few miles on it! the head technician at my dealer informed me that there was a design flaw in the 2005 and 2006 Cobalt's steering mechanism. Both relied entirely on an electronic system that can fail instantly and leave the car with no steering control - while it's being driven! the repairs were largely covered by my extended warranty - I've had it for 38 months. (repair copy: "internal motor failure. " and "replace steering column" = $804. 00) but, as the repair service itself noted, this just restores the same, ready to fail system! the problem can't be fixed because it's a basic design flaw! according to the head technician, beginning in about 2007, the Cobalt was altered to include a back-up hydraulic steering mechanism to make up for this recognized problem. There are over 12,600 lists of this problem on the internet today, some noting that a second failure occurred only two weeks after having the same "repairs" that I had. I'm still paying for this car and it's a death trap. My wife won't ride in it and I won't drive it more than a few blocks and only in daylight. This must be addressed!!!!!! gerald j. Davey, ph. D.
The contact owns 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt. The steering failed it switched from electric to manual which made it difficult to turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician located the failure as the steering column. The estimated cost for repair was $600 to $2,000. The manufacturer stated there is not a recall on the vehicle for the failure therefore they will not assist with the repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 54,000 and the current mileage is 79,000.
The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that the instrument panel gauges fluctuated and the vehicle stalled without warning occasionally. While driving various speeds, the steering failed. The failures were intermittent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing, but the details could not be provided. The vehicle was serviced per NHTSA campaign numbers: 10v073000 (steering) and 14e021000 (electrical system), but the remedies failed to repair the vehicle. The contact mentioned that the vehicle stalled and the power steering seized after the repairs. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200.

My son's car, a 2005 chevy Cobalt 16,xxx miles purchased used on may 19, 2008 at 14,869 miles at a local Ford dealer. Twice in the last week, while driving home from work on the interstate doing approx 60 mph, warning chimes sounded and seconds later a "power steering" and "low traction" lights appeared. Steering became all but inoperable, car became extremely hard to handle and car "shook". Upon stopping and restarting the car, things went back to normal. His comment was that if some "old feeble person" was driving, they would have had an accident. Looking at complaints on various websites, this is a very well known problem to Chevrolet (general motors) in that the new "electric power steering" is prone to failure. Dozens (hundreds) of people have complained about numerous accidents and Chevrolet's response has been that if they can't find a "code" to point to a steering failure, then there must not be a problem. Currently the car has been with boemler Chevrolet in arnold, missouri Monday 7/28 and today Tuesday 7/29. Monday afternoon they called and said they would like to keep it another day since they could not get it to fail and couldn't get a "code" to diagnose the problem. Multiple times in the websites, customers have said that the steering column had to be replaced to fix the problem. This problem has caused other customers to have accidents according to the complaints I have read. I don't know if they've been Smart enough to read their owner's manual to get the proper people to complain to. I realize that complaining on some website is not going to get anything done, and that it must be done through proper channels. This is a very serious problem that must be addressed by Chevrolet (gm) before more people get hurt or worse. I think a voluntary recall on their part would look a lot better than having a "class action lawsuit" filed against them.
I was driving our Cobalt 2005 at a speed of about 25-30 mph when the steering failed without any warning on a suburban street. The steering wheel was completely loose and did not control the car. The vehicle slid into a curb, jumped it and ended up on someone's lawn. There was severe damage to car's underside. Wheels and tires (over $ 5,700). I was told that the "steering knuckle" broke (why???). Car was declared "repairable" but everything is in limbo because of concerns about the safety of the vehicle. I requested an investigation by Chevrolet in detroit . No repairs will be done until Chevrolet has finished the investigation, which is to begin 2-6 days after the request.
Event: just driving alone look down at the message board and it says powersteering failure, and just like that the powersteering was gone. I was able to maneuver the car over to the side of the road, turn the ignition off and back on which worked for about 2 min and the problem recurred. The car is very difficult to steer without powersteering and the way the problem occurs could easily cause a accident I would think after only 39,000 mile that part would not be worn out. The problem still exist, I have no other transportation. Just driving on alert hoping someone will take notice of the issue.
2005 chevy Cobalt had power-steering failure that led to accident causing total damage to the vehicle and partial damage to another vehicle. Minor injury of passenger.
I bought a 2006 chevy Cobalt brand new and immediatly questioned why the sterring wheel shook whenever I braked. I was told by the dealer and another independent mechanic that because the vehicle was a small plastic gas saver that it was to be expected. The shaking of the sterring wheel gets very severe when going downhill and in incidences of quick stops. I was so sure this car was an accident waiting to happen I did not allow my 17 year old driver to drive it. Now, I am hearing about other cevy Cobalts that have steering failure and I no longer accept the answers that I have received from the so called professionals. I hope the government will force gm into a recall before my steering fails and I find myself in the hospital because my steering has failed.
