Power steering and stabilitrak warning indicator comes on while driving vehicle with power steering going out immediately. Stopping on the side of the road, shutting off the vehicle, and then turning it on resets the power steering and all is fine, however, with the steering failing while driving it is a serious safety issue. It has now happened twice in a week with the vehicle having less 50k miles. The first occurrence was during city driving a low speed, the second was on highway. Dealer is now saying the rack and pinion needs to be replaced at a significant cost.
Power steering failed while on interstate at 70mph. Very difficult to control. Had to pull over and cut of engine and restart. Did several times on the way to dealership. Dangerous and should be recalled. Quote to install new power steering rack and pinion module for $1640. There is a recall on certain 2015 trucks for this problem but mine VIN was not in the group. This should apply to all 2015.
While driving the rain the dashboard light came on stating service power steering drive with care and another light came on stating stablelik. This happened on 2-11-20. Again on 2-13-20 raining again same lights came on but this time they didn't go out. Shut the truck off turn back on no power steering. Took the truck to dealer the recall was done at 18000 miles. I paid to have a perform system test done. I was told I need a new rack and pinion steering at a cost of 1800. But gm will pay 900. Of the bill. I called gm to cover the whole cost but told me I was out of the time frame. I have 95000 miles on it . It looks like to me that it is a recurring problem that will continue to happen. Today is 2-14-20 no rain drove truck 6 times so far no dash lights on and have power steering called the dealer back today and was told it must be the moduler that is sealed in the rack and pinion system.
While under pre owned warranty trucks power steering would not work when vehicle was first started. Only activating after restarting vehicle multiple times. Took it in to john l sullivan in roseville they said they could not diagnose the problem and it had nothing to do with a recall. By this time it had happened twice. I continued to drive vehicle until the power steering went out on I 80 in heavy traffic on my way to work at the dmv. My first week of employment with the state. Luckily it wasnt during a turn because it was a struggle just to get it off to the shoulder. The truck was taken to dealership the same day where they were able to diagnose the problem. Perhaps the bumper to bumper warranty is what made them unable to originally diagnose the problem. Because the truck was now under 2k over warrenty limit of 36k. In the end they replaced rack and pinion for total of 1700 dollars. After all the poor customer service and faulty claims they made before this issue I wouldnt put it past them to have seen the problem the first time. Especially because when speaking to a service rep over the phone he mention that within a year of me buying the vehicle they had updated or corrected something to do with the steering. Something the rep at the first encounter of bringing the truck in failed to mention.
Power steering shuts off unexpectedly. Have taken it to multiple dealerships to be told a "recall" was done on it already and nothing can be done but to pay out of pocket to replace entire rack and pinion a $2,000 job. The power steering is electronic and will signal the computer then shut off and warn to drive carefully when it then reverts to manual steering. During a turn it shut off and I nearly hit another vehicle in oncoming traffic due to the fact the wheel would not turn. It can shut off going down the highway , stationary, or as described above while turning.
