Brake lights intermittently did not work. I personally checked the bulbs and they were operative. I checked the brake light switch and noted that the plunger remained "in" although the brake pedal was depressed. I had to push on the plunger several times to get the plunger to push out. The brake lights then worked when the pedal was depressed. I took the vehicle to ferman Chevrolet, tampa FL, after discovering the recall notice on the NHTSA site on 09/17/08. I was informed that this recall (pe05065) had been performed on this vehicle in the past. I had the part replaced and kept the replaced part which is available to you. The part is labeled with the number 25796381 6318b. This is a definite safety hazard and may indicate the "fix" that gm did in this case may need to be fixed again. This was on a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado 5 cylinder. Email update (10/2/2008): my daughter was stopped several times by law enforcement and told that the brake lights were not working. I personally checked the lights and they were not illuminating when the brake pedal was depressed. When I reached up to check the switch with the brake pedal depressed I noted that there were plungers that were not extending when the brake pedal was depressed. I then pushed on the plungers with my fingertips and was able to dislodge the plunger and low and behold the brake lights started working when the brake pedal was depressed.

The brake switch was replaced twice and currently needs to be replaced again. The current mileage was 44,000 and failure mileage was 16,000. Phone interview update (10/2/2008): mr. Hernandez said that he replaced the brake lamp switch three times. He bought the vehicle used and he did not receive a recall notice from gm for brake lamp switch. After each failure, he bought a replacement switch from a gm dealer and did the repair himself. Mr. Hernandez said that the first failure occurred in 2006, the second in 8/08, and the most recentfailure occurred in 9/15/08.
2006 chevy Colorado crew cab. I am the original and current owner of this vehicle. According to the NHTSA complaint number 06v139000, there is a brake light switch malfunction with this type of gm vehicle. I have had this item replaced 6 times during my ownership of the vehicle purchased in February 2006. Gm has failed to fix the issue. This is a major safety issue. I have been pulled over by local and state police informing me my brake lights are inoperable. On two occasions I had a police escort to the allen samuels dealership in corpus christi, texas. Gm needs to fix the issue as soon as possible. I have sent letters regarding this issue on several dates with no response.

The brake light switch has failed multiple times. It was covered twice under a recall. Switches only last 1. 5-2 years. There is no warning or dash light when they go out. I have almost been rear ended twice. Happened again April 13, 2015. I drove it straight to the dealer when I found out in traffic. I knew it was the brake switch again and the dealer confirmed. The dealer called gm to see if they would cover the replacement. They refused. The dealer gave me a discount as they know it is an issue and charged me $87 to change. This is the second time I have had to pay. He gave me this number to call but that was no use as they refused last time. 800-222-1020. Most concerning to me is the lack of concern by gm to fix a know safety issue in the brake and light system. Someone probably has or will be seriously injured or killed. They need to come up with a comprehensive fix and at a minimum continue covering failures under warranty. Not fixing the design problem then making money charging people is not right. The dealer who did the work last time is five star chevy in dallas, TX. Craig greene was the representative who tried to help me with gm if you need to contact him. Dealer tried but gm did not take ownership for their product.

I have owned my 2005 Colorado since March 2005. Since then, my brake light switch has failed 8 times, the last occurring August 2007. Even after having repairs done per the recall, the brake light switch failed only 3 months after. I have made my complaint known to gm as to the dangers of my vehicle and they do not want to do anything to help. It is a shame that someone will get hurt and/or killed due to this safety hazard. Email update (10/7/08): I will retrieve all invoices I can find and fax to you. Also, the brake light switch has failed on 2 more occasions since I filed this latest complaint. It is constant every 2-6 months. I usually find out that the brakes are out by another driver alerting me. On one occasion I actually got hit from behind at a stop light. Luckily, we were moving less than 10mph and no significant damage, or injury occurred. I really believe I am driving a dangerous vehicle, especially with my 2 year old in the back seat. Someone, at some point will get seriously hurt. . . Thanks again for your research and work on this matter. . .

Brake lights & cruise control quit working as described in NHTSA recall 06v139000 and gm recall 06030. Dealer did not repair under recall because the VIN # did not match recall database. I think gm needs to expand recall to all who experience this problem.

I was almost rear ended today and the driver behind me came up to my window and told me that I had no brake lights, not even the center light. I have also noticed that I have no cruise control. The bulbs are new. I called the dealership and asked them if they have seen this problem and they said they haven't seen it on the Colorado. I checked the internet and found several other owners who have experienced the same problem, they directed me to the NHTSA website where I found the other complaints. I told them that there is an internal investigation on the matter and they told me they would look at the truck for $95 but they would only fix the problem for free is there is a recall. The vehicle is a 2004 Chevrolet Colorado.
2004 Colorado cruise control switch and brake lights was inoperable. Mechanic replaced the faulty brake switch which took care of the problem at the time. ***** after the above repair the consumer was notified that the brake lights had failed again. He also noticed that the cruise control has also ceased to function. The vehicle was taken back tot he dealer to be inspected. Again the problem was diagnosed as a faulty brake switch. The consumer was told by one of the dealer's staff that corrosion had built up between the connector and socket for the brake switch until an electrical current failed to exist between the two. The problem recurred two more times.
: the contact stated the brake light switch was inoperable. The dealer has replaced the brake light switch three times. The manufacturer has been alerted. Updated 07/11/06.
Chevy Colorado I had my truck for about 1 year. I had actually almost got killed on the highway due to the lights being out. *brake lights* . This is happening to many people I talk to. I think chevy needs to get there stuff together before people get killed and hurt over a relay switch not working properly.
I was driving and someone told me that my brake lights were not working, I got home and checked all the bulbs and fuses, they were all ok. Then searching in the internet at a chevy Colorado site, I found out that there is a problem with the brake light switch. I had notice that the cruise control has not been working for at least 3 months, I had taken the truck in for a check up since, but I see that they failed to notice that the brake lights are not working.
A friend who happened to be driving behind me made me aware of the fact that I had absolutely no brake lights. I have no idea as to the length of time that I have been driving around in this unsafe condition. I have had other vehicles tailgate me on several occasions, now I know why. Although I am entering Dec 16 05 as the incident date, this is the date it was first brought to my attention. I have no idea as to how long it was like this. I took it to the dealer on 12-19-05 and I left it there until they replaced my brake light switch on 12-20-05 (because they had to get one from another dealer). They said they have not received any information on this problem as to a recall, etc. This is a serious safety issue!!! I have read that others have this problem repeat and I pray that I don't get rear-ended or end up dead because of a faulty switch. I now will not let my wife drive it until a permanent fix is released, which I hope is very soon. Thanks for your consideration.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado. While driving approximately 20 mph, the contact approached a stop sign and immediately engaged the brake pedal. A driver in another vehicle alerted the contact that the rear brake lights were inoperative. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the brake light switch was replaced under the service warranty. In 2009, the failure recurred and the vehicle was repaired under a recall associated with NHTSA campaign id number 09v310000 (exterior lighting:brake lights:switch). The remedy repair was insufficient and most recently, the failure recurred for a third time. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 2,000.
Was driving and was told by a passing vehicle that my brake lights were out, and when I asked which one , they replied all of them. Cruise control also would not work. Dealer fixed it saying the brake light switch was the cause.
I was pulled over by a police officer telling me that I had no brake lights. I had just previously changed the bulbs, so I searched for alternate problems and located the recall no. 06v139000. I contacted my dealer and they told me that my VIN # does not match the recall order. I contacted chevy owner support and they told me the same thing, that they could not find a recall for my VIN # and there was nothing in the database showing a recall existed.
The brake light switch has failed after owning car for two weeks.
Brake lights have failed four times in 18 months. All dealer does is replace switch. The first time they failed I noticed 2 vehicles nearly rear ending me. Then someone told me I had no brake lights. Now I know brake lights are out when cruise control quits working. Gm wants to give $2,500 to trade vehicle but shouldn't they be required to fix problem. I can't trade without discussing this problem reducing my trade in value.
Nhtsa action number : pe05065 brake light switch was replaced on my 2005 chevy Colorado after I reported, to the dealership, that none of the brake lights worked and the cruise control would not activate.
My brake light switch failed. No telling how many days I was driving around like this. I don't use cruise control so I didn't notice anything wrong like other people mentioned. West side Chevrolet in katy, TX did the repairs. Not sure of the exact date though. The bad thing is that I drive in stop and go traffic to and from work. There was no way for me to know they were not working other than someone on the highway yelling at me that my brake lights are not working! how am I to tell in the future that they are not working? maybe next time I will get rear ended???:-0.
