1 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 09/18/2024

While driving the vehicle loses power steering and becomes unsteerable. The same as NHTSA recall# 21v213. Since gm wouldn't even have known of this problem when 2016's were being built I think I'll be fixing the exact problem and partthat gm fixed in the recall on the 2015's. They should at least notify 2016 owners that there is a good chance of this happening.

2 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 02/16/2021

I started my 2017 Chevrolet Colorado in a parking lot and had no power steering. I received a power steering failure message telling me to drive with caution and to have the power steering serviced. I left it run for 15 minute and shut it off. I returned a couple hours later and the power steering had returned. The dealer found code c056d. They had to replace the rack and pinon assembly. I am the original owner of the truck and it has 38000 miles on it. The dealer reduced the repair cost from $1500 to $900. I found that there was a recall for 2015 and 2016 Colorados for the same problem. A service bulletin 16-na-065 was issued for 2015 and 2016 models and then later included 2017 and 2018 models. Chev would not pay any of the cost because it was not under warranty or part of the recall. This is a major safety issue. I have found several instances in forums where the same thing has happened. Apparently this is not just a Colorado/canyon issue and is not limited to 2015 and 2016 model years. There are examples of this happening on silveraldos also. It the vehicle had been in motion when I lost the power steering I could have caused a major crash.

3 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 09/07/2020

Stabilitytrack light came on & lost power steering while the vehicle was in motion on the highway. Immediately, turned on the hazard lights and attempted to steer the vehicle to the shoulder. Steering a vehicle at a highway speed without power steering was a very difficult task. Restarted the vehicle a couple of times, then it was back to normal. The dealership found error codes u0415 and u0420 among other errors in the history of the vehicle. The dealership only re-charged the battery and reset the computer (I believe). However, the exact same issue occurred again on 10/18/2020 in the exact same scenario. Except, when the vehicle was brought back to the same dealership. The dealership was unable to detect any error message in the vehicle history, which is quite frightening. Expecting to bring this vehicle to a different dealership for a second opinion.

Failure Date: 07/28/2020

While driving to work on 7/23/20 at 45mh I lost power steering and stability control, warning light came on and (lost of power steering and stability malfunction) came on the dash. Had to pull to the side of the road and turned the truck off, waited 10min then triad to start it and it reset itself. Then on 7/25/20 it happened again only this time I was on the freeway doing 65mh with my wife and almost caused an accident going around an overpass. Because it's the only vehicle I have to go to work I decided to take it 7/28/20 and on the way home it did it again only this time it caused the wheels to skip, scared the sh%t out of me. I read there was a recall so I called the dealer but they say my truck dose not fall under the recall. This is a huge safety concern and after doing some research on the internet I'm not alone. 16 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/10/2020

After being parked for a few hours in -10 degree weather or colder I lose power steering. When I start the vehicle and attempt to back out of the driveway I am unable to turn the wheel without an incredible amount of effort. A service message appears stating "power steering assist. Drive with care. " this has occurred every time I have left the vehicle in cold weather for longer than an hour or so. Each time this has happened I have been fortunate to be able to get the vehicle into a heated garage right away and after a few hours when I start the vehicle the power steering failure has resolved and the steering wheel turns with ease again. This sounds very similar to recall number 16v054000 (15595) on 2/1/16 for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado which required the steering gear torque sensor cover assembly be replaced due to a loss or reduction in power steering assist. This is a huge safety concern. I looked up the issue on the internet and there are several complaints with 2016 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC canyons and many people have had it occur while driving on freeways at high speeds and around icy corners. Apparently, it can occur in any weather not just cold weather though my issue has only occurred since the weather dropped below zero.

17 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/05/2020

After I parked the truck outside in about -15 for about 4 hours, I started the truck and tried to pull out the driveway but experienced a lost of power steering. I could barely turn. Fortunately, my friend let me use their heated garage. I let it sat for about 15 minutes, started it, and still no power steering and the "service power steering" message was shown. Let it sat for another 15 minutes, initially no power steering and same dic message, then all of a sudden it started working. Drove 20 minutes home without further problems. But that made me worry that if it happens at speed, the outcome would be very different!.

21 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

Lost power steering while driving. Warning light and alarm came on dash. Turned off ignition and back on and had steering back. This happened several times. This was in Feb. 2019. Didn't happen again until Dec. 2019 and happened several times. Each time it would lose power steering and I turn car off and back on and power returned. Very dangerous when trying to steer because it is extremely difficult to steer without power. Last time I lost it on the interstate and it was so dangerous. Gm put out a recall on power steering on 2015 chev Colorado(but not on ours for what reason?) recall # 15595. I have the exact problem on my 2015 chevy Colorado!.

22 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/27/2019

While driving from the grocery store to our house, the steering wheel became incredibly stiff and a message appeared on the dashboard warning me to service power steering and drive with care. I was making a right turn out of the parking lot onto the city street and the steering wheel went stiff and the message appeared. I had to move the steering wheel with a lot of force to avoid crossing over the correct lane and go onto head on traffic. Luckily the grocery store isn't far from my house. If my wife or sons had been driving then this could have ended badly. This isn't the first time I've lost power steering. This has happened while on the highway. When on the highway I turned to the off ramp and again the steering wheel went stiff with the power steering loss message. Since then the truck doesn't see much use. Lately, it has been getting so bad that the power steering doesn't even work and starts stiff when first turning on the truck. Sometimes the power steering isn't stiff when first turned on but the loss of power steering message still occurs. The truck just sits unused because it is flat out dangerous to drive. I've checked all of the fuses and they were all fine. I've disconnected the battery for 20 minutes and reconnected it and the steering wheel is still stiff and the same powering steering loss message.

23 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/11/2019

While driving my 2016 Colorado I experienced a loss of power steering. It has happened many times and various situations weather it was at highway speeds or local roads. It has gone out while sitting still. There is no indication when it is going to happen. I attempted to have a dealership look at it while I was experiencing the issue and they refused to do it with out and appointment. How can I make an appointment when it is not a full time issue. It is a very dangerous problem to lose power steering while making a turn on a busy road. I am well aware that there was an issue with the 2015 models and there was a recall and now the 2016 models are experiencing the same issues and gm refuses to fix the issue with out it being an extremely expensive repair.

24 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 11/08/2019

26 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 09/22/2019

I lost power steering while driving our 2016 chevy Colorado down an off ramp from an interstate highway. The steering wheel felt like it locked up. I had to take my eyes off the road to look at the warning messages and then process that it might be loss of power steering. This was an extremely dangerous situation as steering was very difficult and I still needed to get to a safe place to stop. I was able to pull through an intersection and get off the road. I turned off the truck and then restarted and the problem went away. I will take the truck to the dealer for an explanation hopefully.

27 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

On four separate occasions, my vehicle has lost power steering without warning. This occurred when driving at a variety of speeds and in a variety of conditions. One time, I was traveling at less than 5 miles an hour. Another time, I was traveling at 70 miles per hour. Some times it occurred during a turn, sometimes it occurred while traveling in a straight line. When power steering was lost, many warning lights would go off on the dashboard. After pulling the vehicle over to the side of the road, turning the vehicle off and then back on somewhere between 1 and 3 times, the power steering would come back.

28 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/19/2019

Multiple times over the last several months, I have lost all power steering in my vehicle. The stabilitrack is now also being affected. I understand there is an active investigation into gms recall of this vehicle for this specific reason. I wanted to make sure that my vehicle is added into your complaint count for your investigation. I lose steering at any and all speeds, both while driving straight and turning. 31 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 07/09/2019

February 2017 (34141 miles) - lost power steering suddenly while driving at highway speed w/"power steering service" warning. Pulled over w/difficulty, shut down, restarted, problem seemed to disappear. Had code red at local chevy dealership, no charge, advised to return if issue recurred. May 2017 (38494 miles) - same issue. Returned to same chevy dealership, diagnosed "poor connection in torque sensor harness", installed sl-n-housing kit using n-lubricant and stated it was covered by warranty. July 2019 (71474 miles) - identical issue (driving, highway speed, power steering lost w/"power steering service" warning, and additionally traction control loss warning). Pulled over w/difficulty. Shutdown, issue resolved on restart. Same day - went to same chevy dealer, told to return the next am due to scheduling. 10 July 2019 - returned to same chevy dealer. After 2+ hours of inspection was informed the sensor could not be replaced alone and that a large portion of the steering column had to be entirely replaced due to the failing "torque sensor harness" w/repairs/parts estimated at over $2000. 00. When I suggested that this may be a recall issue I was informed that the month my 2015 was built was not part of the recall even though the problem is essentially the same. Note: the above vehicle is and has been almost exclusively driven on well maintained roads w/no aggressive off road use/abuse.

32 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 07/07/2019

On 4 separate occasions in the past month I have lost power steering. No codes are issued only lights on the dash stating "service power steering" and " service sabilitrack". The first 2 incidents occurred on a straight stretch of highway at 45 mph, 1 incident occurred in a parking lot at 15 mph. These 3 were manageable but the 4th occurred in a curve at 45 mph. This one took all I had to keep the vehicle from going off the road and down an embankment. In all incidents the vehicle was stopped, turned of and restarted shortly after the lose and the problem was gone. Vehicle is scheduled into a local chevy dealer to see what they say is wrong.

33 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/21/2019

While in motion on a city street at low speed near my home, the vehicle suddenly lost power steering assist. I returned to my home and parked. Later, I restarted the vehicle and found that power steering was working normally. Took truck to dealer, who diagnosed as faulty "electric belt drive rack and pinion steering gear", part # 84494275. Estimate to repair was over $1800. Refer to gm bulletin 18027 for additional info.

34 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 01/12/2019

While driving two different alarms flashes on dash screen; 1) "service stabilitrak" and 2) "service power steering, drive with care. " vehicle then lose power steering. I have learned that if I pull over, stop and turn vehicle off and then back on the alarms clear and I have power steering once again. I have noticed this situation while driving on flat highway and when vehicle is a little off balance such as on a dirt road. I have taken to the dealer, explained situation and referred dealer to comments online. Dealer stated the alarm history is clear and therefore they have no idea what to do. I purchased vehicle around September 2018 from dealer and this situation has happened approximately 18 times over 4 months or so. It has alarmed, I've cleared it and then alarm again in the same hour. It has also gone weeks without alarming. .

35 Lose Power Steering problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Failure Date: 08/10/2018

While driving the vehicle has lost power steering assist and stabilitrak intermittently on multiple occasions. Alerts flash on the screen and warning lights illuminate and ofcourse the steering will jerk back from a turn (if you're actively in one). Fortunately, I have taken photos in the past and actually had it occur on my way to an oil change today. They checked the code it comes back to "c0545" which can be found on gm bulletin "pit5437b" that identifies this problem back in September 2015. The cherolet service technician who diagnosed this on my vehicle informed my service department adviser that the vehicle is not safe with the problem, which of course was relayed back to me. So, if a problem chevy identified in 9/15 makes a vehicle unsafe to operate, why does Chevrolet want me to pay $1700 + tax instead of including my vehicle in the recall that addressed the same issue (NHTSA campaign number: 16v054000)?.
