Air Bag Problems of Chevrolet Corvette - part 1

Air bag display is on and apparently there is a leak in the accelerant on the passenger side of the car.

Description: on June 23, 2025, I was involved in a traffic collision in las vegas, nevada. According to the police report, another driver failed to yield while exiting a private driveway and struck the front of my vehicle while I was stopped in the center turn lane preparing to turn left. As the vehicle entered my lane, I pressed the horn continuously in an attempt to alert the driver. My right hand was positioned on the horn pad in the center of the steering wheel. At the moment of impact, the driver airbag deployed while my hand remained on the horn pad. I immediately experienced severe pain in my right wrist. Medical evaluation confirmed fractures of the distal radius and ulna requiring surgical fixation with plates and screws. My purpose in submitting this report is to document a potential safety concern involving the interaction between horn activation and airbag deployment. Activating the horn during an imminent collision may be a foreseeable defensive maneuver, which could place the driver’s hand directly over the airbag module at the moment of deployment. I respectfully submit this information for safety review in case similar incidents have been reported.

Vehicle was hit on driver side/a column. Head hit window. No side air bag deployed. Vehicle is getting repaired at body shop. My son received a concussion; neck pain; numbness in hand. Vehicle inspected by insurance company. Police report available; other driver cited for careless driving. Vehicle hit so hard it was pushed onto sidewalk adjacent to roadway.

This lead to an injury accident which totaled the car. I have documentation stating that the recall was fixed, but after I moved to germany with the army, the recall regularly activated the active handling when not needed (e. G parking) but then when we started slipping, the active handling did not engage and we crashed, totaling the car. The airbags did not engage even though the car played pinball on both sides of the autobahn. If we were going any faster, we would have died.

Air bag warning light comes on intermittently. . . Goes away when I move the seat back and forth indicating there is faulty wiring with this vehicle. Apparently according to a Corvette forum, this is a common problem, which tells me there is a chance that the problem possibly came from the factory.

Smell of raw gasoline coming from drivers side gas tank area after filling gas tank ,just bought the car had half tank of gas at the dealer didn’t smell when I checked the car then.

The body control module has failed and there are no replacement parts available except used parts. The bcm is hard coded with the VIN. If you use a bcm from another car, certain safety systems are deactivated such as the air bags. The bcm is central to the electronic architecture so all other systems are at risk. The unit can be responsible for the car not starting, the headlights not working, the power windows and door locks failing, or in my case the active suspension not functioning. Since bcm's are widely used, this is a looming major safety issue for the nation because gm quit making new ones, no one else makes these parts, no one can repair the units. I know a number of c6 Corvette owners are using used parts which deactivates the air bags and the security system.

The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Corvette. The contact stated that the warning message saying that the front tires were low. The contact added air into the tires but the warning message saying the tires were low continued to illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the dealer replaced the tires but the failure reoccurred several times and the tires were replaced several times. On another occasion while the contact was driving 65 mph the vehicle started shaking and the vehicle collapse on the front driver side, causing the contact to lose control of the vehicle and the vehicle struck the wall. The air bags did not deploy. The contact was serious injured and was taken to the hospital. No police report was filed. The vehicle was towed, and the vehicle was diagnosed by the manufacturer, and the diagnosis was that the front driver side rim fractured. The manufacturer was contacted, and the manufacturer diagnosed the vehicle but did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was 35,000.

Airbag light in the dashboard goes on and off intermittently. There is a lot of talk on the Corvette forum of other people having the same issue. I'm concerned the airbag won't work if it's needed.

The airbag indicator light on the dash of the vehicle periodically lights up indicating a fault with the system. The car was checked by a dealer who could find no issue. The light resets if you cycle the vehicle on/off, but the problem returns randomly when driving the vehicle. The airbag system disabling itself without warning puts the driver at risk of not having the system deploy under conditions it should. The system resetting the warning to every on/off cycle is also misleading because unless you experience the behavior there is no reliable way to know that there is an issue with the srs system on the vehicle.

Passenger side air bag module will not arm the air bag system when any person sits in the seat. Have made multiple attempts to purchase the air bag presence module since June of 2022. Once with dealer, could not get the part, and two more times online. Each time I am told the part is on back order and they have no timeline as to when the part will become available. So I have a $86,000 Corvette that my wife or son cannot ride in because the air bag sensor is faulty.

Airbag light intermittently comes on and goes off whilst driving. Per gm, they will not say whether the airbag will or will not deploy while the light is on. There is a TSB for the issue, but it only last 10 years past the in-service date. When safety is affected, there should be no limit on time to have remedied.

The computer isn't allowing me to check off the other issues. The brakes were the other thing that couldn't be checked off. The vehicle went off the road and the brakes locked and now the vehicle is totaled. Had I been notified about these recalls this would not have happened.

Get a intermittent red air bag light on the dash when driving. Not sure if air bag system is working properly. Would affect safety if the air bag malfunctions. Not inspected by anyone, car is for sale.

1. Strong fuel smell when the car is parked in garage. Believe it is coming from top of driver's side fuel tank. Vapor is so strong I'm afraid it will explode. Doesn't matter if tank is full or empty. 2. Seat belt air bag warning light is on in the driver's cluster unit. Car only has 35,000 miles. Don't think this is safe. Will need it checked out ASAP at dealer.

Air bag light in dashboard seemingly randomly turns on and off while driving and is usually on indicating an issue with the air bag system. To begin with the light was only intermittently on but over time it has reversed and now the light only turns off intermittently.

The airbag warning light comes on when there is only the driver in the vehicle. When there are two people in the vehicle the airbag warning light goes off. I have had this checked at an independent Corvette mechanic and he says the parts are very expensive and not available at this time. I was wondering if you could tell me if this is a problem that has been reported by other chevy owners? where can I go to get parts? there has been no injury or accident. I would like for my airbags to work properly. In case of an accident lack of airbags could be a problem.

Warning light that indicates an airbag system malfunction comes on intermittently for no reason. Occurrs when vehicle is not being driven, but lights when you start the car. Thia IA a serious safety issue since the airbags wont deploy when it's lit. Car only has 13,000 original miles on it.

The air bag warning light comes on and off at various times. Sometimes it stays on and other times it goes out after a while. If I shut the car off and wait a few then when restarted it goes out sometimes it stays off other times it comes back on. This appears to be a common problem on this generation Corvette from what I have been reading.

On the evening of October 9, 2020, the air bag on my 2017 Corvette z06 unexpectly deployed without any warning in my face blocking my view while driving downhill around 45 miles per hour and without me striking any object on the two-lane highway. I believe the right front wheel was defective and broke puncturing the right front tire that caused the right front suspension and frame rails to strike the road surface and break the right front suspension in two that caused me to lose control of the steering and strike the hillside along the two-lane road causing over $38,854. 00 worth of damage to my Corvette that grew to $44,000. 00. My Corvette had never been previously involved in any accidents whatsoever. There is a class action law suit proceeding through the courts now against general motors related to Corvette wheels cracking and causing damage to Corvette owners tires and cars in varying degrees. Esis who represents general motors, investigated my defects claim and after general motors received and reviewed my documentation and photos about the unexpected air bag deployment, suspected wheel and suspension defects they stated that no defects exist. I have attached photos and have the right front cracked wheel, punctured tire and broken suspension components in storage for examination to assist in determining the cause of the suspected defects as stated. The unexpected air bag deployment, cracked wheel and suspension failure caused me to strike the hillside and could also have caused me to collide and strike oncoming motorists causing property damage, personal injury and possible death to me and other motorists. .

After filling tank with gasoline there is a leak. The fumes from the leak are very strong in my garage, requiring me to ventilate the area to prevent an explosion. I do not overfill. The auto-turnoff at the pump won't allow that. Apparently the leak is where the two tanks are connected.

Air bag readiness light comes on intermittently on dash. Just purchased vehicle. Car is very low miles showroom condition. This issue happened when turning vehicle on. After further research this has been an issue with these cars for at least 10 years and gm chooses not to rectify problem. It can make car unsafe to drive.

Wiring harness for drivers seat failed causing airbag system to be disabled. Fails at start-up. Strong fuel smell from driver's side. Vehicle stationary. Not cured by replacing gas gap and fuel pump.

Seat belt pretensioner on the passenger side deployed (sounded like a shotgun blast in the cabin) without provocation. No accident, did not run over anything, etc. Going straight ~45mph on an empty street at 12:50am. Smoke billowing out of the cabin of my car, all the lights were on, bells were ringing, etc. It's as if I was in an accident, but no airbags deployed. Frightening experience! gm said it is not their problem.

Abs light stays on. History: on 11/17/18 before driving my vehicle I had to adjust my driver's seat all the way back to accommodate my long legs after another person had previously moved the seat forward when they were sitting in the vehicle. When I started the vehicle the abs light briefly flashed, then came on steady, then it after several minutes the light eventually went out while I was driving. The next time I started the car the abs light came on, flashed briefly, then remained on steady. Now, each time the car is started/driven, the abs light briefly flashes during start up and then always remains constantly on after that. The vehicle only has 19,000 miles on it.

Drivers airbag red light on instrument panel stays on frequently. Most of the time it stays lit after starting the car. I have had it pop on after hitting a bump a couple times.

Takata recall visible gasoline leakage after vehicle hasn't been parked over a period of months. Then I began to take notes of what , when , where this leak was occurring, I would fill the tank, park the auto in the garage . The next time I used the vehicle, a noticeable gas odor, spot on the garage floor was noted. I started to place a cardboard under the front end to more readily be able to observe the substance leaking. The odor was unmistakable. Several occurrences n spotting is evident after having parked in my garage . The auto was parked overnight in my garage. I am listing the latest calendar date and photo. I have other dates in my notepad. 2) my seatbelt occasionally will not lock. I hear the click of a seatbelt lock then upon driving away from my home ~ ,25 miles ~ my seatbelt unlocked through no fault of my own. 3) airbag cannot be checked for effectiveness .

Airbag readiness light comes on intermittently. Seems to occur while the drivers seat is adjusted back and forth but not sure. There are hundreds of complaints about this in 2005-2007 Corvettes. It occurs both stationary and in motion.

Smell gasoline from driver's side . Change gas cap didn't help.

The contact owned a 2016 Chevrolet Corvette. While driving 25 mph, the vehicle was involved in a crash. The contact rear ended another vehicle that abruptly pulled out in front of them. The driver's air bag deployed. A police report was filed. The contact was knocked unconscious by the air bag. The contact sustained damage to the left eye, which required medical attention. The vehicle was towed and destroyed. A dealer was not made aware of the crash. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000. The VIN was not available.
