1 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 05/08/2015

Any quick search of the web will show that this car engine, the ls2 or 6. 2 l engine has had a defect that gm has denied over the years and fails to stand behind after warranty; crank shaft pulley wobble and worn rubber gaskets on the harmonic balancer of the 2006 model year. Tech bulletins have been issued and this topic of pulley wobble and rubber gasket failure and is quite the talk on various Corvette forums. Since I am well behind warranty, I had to have this diagnosed through my licensed certified auto mechanic. This repair requires extensive labor time to repair. Scared to see the bill tomorrow. Gm's response is I should of taken it to an authorized chevy dealer. That is hog wash because should I had done that, I would probably still had to pay their exorbitant labor costs and still not be covered on this serious engine defect. In fact, I believe gm has re-designed the part so what does that tell you. Failure to fix will just harm the engine for the future and replace belt after belt when the true problem is ignored by gm.

2 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

I started the car when it was cold, it began to squeal from the belts. I gave it a small rev and it squealed intensely, I mean very loudly! I opened the hood and belts were not moving. I could not move the car. The harmonic balancer had lost it's bond. I am just glad I was sitting still. At speed, the steering would have been lost, it could have killed me! I had the car towed to the shop, and it cost me $1000. 00. Not good! I read that this happens alot. Bad design for sure. I should be reimbursed. What can I do? chevy won't even talk to me about it. It's a shame because I love my car, but now I am afraid to drive it!.

3 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/10/2014

Accelerated quickly to 35 mph and when I reached the end of the block I attempted to slow and make a right hand turn. At that time I got a warning to check the charging system and noticed I had no power steering. Managed to muscle the wheel to complete the turn (had it been my wife there is no way she would have been able to turn the wheel) and continue slowly down the street to my driveway where I again muscled the car into the driveway. Discovered that the motor was running but the serpentine belt was not moving. Thus no alternator, power steering etc. I had my independent mechanic check it out, discovered that the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer pulley on the crank shaft stripped and the crank shaft was turning and not moving the pulley. He called the dealership to inquire about the parts and they said they have plenty in stock. He thought this was surpising and that it was not a special order part. The service manager told him that they have had a number of similar incidents. Both my mechanic and I think this should qualify for some type of recall if it is happening with frequency. Obviously some kind of design flaw and/or material flaw, plus they didn't key the pulley so if the bolt strips you would not loose the power steering, etc. If this had happened at high speed or during the action of turning I believe a serious accident and/or injury could have occured. Cost of the parts and repair were $2300. 00.

4 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Started hearing squealing sounds a few weeks ago. Noticed the crankshaft pulley had a noticeable wobble. Did a google search & found multiple reports on forums, youtube and such of of others with the same problem. Also my friend with the same car but a newer year just had it replaced under warranty. My car is off warranty but a harmonic balancer should not wear out in six years with just 7,500 miles (yes, seven thousand five hundred). My 2000 Ford expedition has 151k. Chevrolet wants about $1,000 to replace it. ## VIN passed ## Chevrolet, Corvette 2006 ##.

5 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/02/2012

While turning in a corner on the highway, I lost power steering and I had smoke and debris flying out of the back of the car. Luckily there was nobody near me, and I managed to steer off the road safely. Looked in the engine and the accessory belt was shredded, which also destroyed the heat shield material on the inside of the hood. Got a friend to pick me up and we installed a new belt. Drove 0. 5 miles and the belt flew completely off this time. Power steering completely died, and I could barely turn the wheel while being tailgated by cars. Cooling system failed, coolant flying all over the engine bay, under the car, and on the highway. I'm glad I wasn't killed. Checked all the pulleys and found that the crankshaft pulley bolt had backed out, which I later found out caused wobble on the belt and led the engine/car to fail. Got a tow to the nearest gm dealer. There are many complaints about this on internet Corvette forums, and gm is aware of the issue (TSB #05-06-01-001a). It seems like crashing and causing accidents would warrant a recall.

6 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

2005 Corvette, 45,224 miles. Squeaking noise from engine accessory drive belts, clunking/ knocking noise at lower front of engine. Found crankshaft balancer retaining bolt backed out, crankshaft balancer moving forward. Had this bolt come out further, it would have damaged the steering rack, accessory belts coming off, loss of power steering, electrical, braking. This issue is known by gm/Chevrolet, TSB 05-06-01-001d. Vehicle was flat bed towed to dealer, they denied that there was a problem with the bolt, it just needed new belts. After threatening the dealer & gm with a lawsuit if the pulley came off and resulted in property damage or bodily injury, they would replace the pulley with the upgraded one & a new bolt per the TSB, but at customer expense. Repairs completed 2/10/2010. This vehicle was within the VIN number range for the TSB, but the dealer was more concerned where the paper copy of gm TSB 05-06-01-001d came from- this is public information. Please- make this issue a formal recall before someone gets hurt. Nhtsa database shows at least 6 similar incidents, many others have not been reported to NHTSA.

10 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/26/2006

My brother suggested I report that the engine in my car's front pulley comes loose and falls off causing loss of electrical production, a/c, and worst of all power steering--its a Corvette-dont know if it happens a lot to others also but maybe you want to look into it-seems to be a dangerous situation.

11 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/22/2005

On June 22, 2005 while driving at highway speed my '05 covette lost its serpentine belt causing the car to lose pwer steering, engine oil and coolent. With the loss or steering the car became hard to steer and manuver. This problem has been know by Chevrolet that a specific bolt was not placed correctly during manufacturing and causes the loss of the serpentine belt. This was a scary event to lose steering at 60mph with a passenger during the ending of rush hour traffic on hwy114 at 6pm. The repair is taking place now involving a new diamond washer and proper torquing of the bolt. Possible engine damage may have occured and the reliability of the vehicle is now in question. In some occurances the problem has happened again. I don't want it to be me and have an accident.

12 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 03/23/2005

Driving new 2005 Corvette (1486 total miles on car) in shopping district at 35mph. Heard "slapping" sound from under the hood. Pulled over and found that one of the underhood engine belts was shredding. Was aware of a manufacturers technical service bulletin (05-06-01-001a - Feb 8, 2005), therefore thought immediately that the problem this TSB addresses was the problem. The occurrance was uneventfull, as I was driving very slowly, however if it had been at highway speeds this could have resulted in loss of control and broken fluid lines under the hood. Engine was disabled. Car was flat-bedded to local Chevrolet dealer where it will be repaired.

13 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/30/2004

Complaint received via e-mail. My 3 day old Corvette shredded its serpentine belt, overheated, and lost its steering. Car had 300 miles on it. From what I have been reading on 'corvette forum this was not an isolated incident but has been occurring in too many new Corvettes. This problem could affect the operation of the vehicle as it not only affected the cooling system but more importantly the steering and braking. To make matters worse the repair of this problem was failing on many cars, and they were experiencing it for the second and third time. .

14 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/15/2004

Seven to eight thousand Chevrolet Corvettes built in late 2004 are in a batch being watched by gm because there have been dozens of instances of the crank shaft pulley belt backing out and allowing the pulley to loosen or fall off. When that happens the car looses power steering and the rest of the functions run off the belts. The belt and pulley can also cause other damage under the hood. Production nuber Corvettes from over three thousand to over eleven thousand are in the group identified as problematic. Chevrolet has realease a technical service bulletin, TSB number (05-06-01-001a), but says it can not help buyers until after a failure. I own a Corvette in that group, and I fear that I can't trust the car to perform safely. I belong to several Corvette related internet forums, and I get reports of new failures every day. There are dozens of failures reported by members of just one forum. The failures have been occurring since November, 2004. Gm is obviously not going to fix this safety problem without NHTSA inquiry, and I'd like NHTSA to ask gm to get serious about protecting the lives of their purchasers. Spontaneous loss of steer assist and fluid loss is a safety issue - in my opinion. Will NHTSA look into this situation before someone dies, please?.

15 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 10/24/2004

(1) purchased car 10/23/2004. (2) on 10/24/2004, less than 24 hours after purchasing the car, the crank pulley "came loose" and the car threw its serpentine belt (learned after the incident) while driving on a crowded interstate. The first indication of a problem was when the driver information console (dic) displayed a malfunction with the vehicles charging system that needed service. Voltage displayed on dic dropped quickly in . 1 volt increments until roughly 11 volts were displayed. Then, the car became increasingly unresponsive to driver input for steering and throttle. Brakes felt "mushy" but continued to respond to driver input. Although the dash displayed a frightening number of error messages and alarms, the occupants had no idea what was the matter with the vehicle. Trying to cross 5 lanes of packed freeway traffic to get to a safe break down area, in a car that appears to have lost its mind and is spraying antifreeze all over the highway, could have easily resulted in injury or death. We were very fortunate that we did not cause an accident. 3) vehicle was "repaired" at ourisman Chevrolet in marlow heights, MD. Crank pulley, bolt(s), serpentine belt, and underhood insulation (damaged by flying belt) were replaced. A friction washer was added behind the crank pulley on the advice of gm tech support. Broke down again with the same problem on 13 November. Car is now at radley Chevrolet in fredericksburg, va. Gm has ordered the motor replaced and the dealer is awaiting parts. This is not an isolated failure, there are other ls2 engines breaking down because of this crank pulley problem.
