I became aware of a potential valve guide wear issue with the ls7 and ls9 engines through the Corvette forum, the Corvette action center, and other sources. I began researching the issue and decided that I should have my car checked out at a gm dealership. It was determined that the valve train noise appeared to be normal and the engine was not burning or using any excessive oil. The more I followed the valve guide wear issue, the more concerned I became. That being said and the fact that the dealer had never heard of or had any customer come in for the issue I decided to have a local performance engine shop (because of their extensive ls7 experience) install a reworked set of heads with bronze valve guides with additional parts recommend by the shop, to fix the problem permanently, based on their knowledge with the issue. My original heads were evaluated for valve guide wear and 'every intake and exhaust valve guide was outside of the gm service bulletin service limit of . 0037 with the #8 intake valve being so far out that it was deemed n/r (so loose it was too big for the gauge readout). The vehicle only had 7500 miles on it. 88% of the Corvette forum members who have had their cylinder heads tested for excessive valve guide wear, were out of service specifications. . Read more...

We were at a stop light and smelled oil burning. This happened a couple of times before we decided to look under the car. When we did there was oil all over the oil pan and all the way to the rear of the car. Took the car to the chevy dealer and they tightened the bolts on the oil pan. The service manager told us when we had it in that there was a service bulletin for this and the rear main seal had a problem with leaking and that it should be replaced if any one brought a vehicle in with this problem. Took the car home and drove for a couple days and still smelled oil. Looked under the car and there was oil all over again. This time it was also all over the back of the car and the rear wheels and brakes. Now that is a safety issue to me. Took the car back to the dealer. They kept it a week. Went to pick up the car and the service manager told us they replaced the seal but did not have to pull the motor??????? I said how did you do that? maybe they could pull this off on some little old lady but not someone that knows something about cars. He went and talked to the guy that worked on the car and he said they didn't replace it, they put dye in and test drove it and didn't find a leak. Well by the time I got home there was oil all over again. In other words, they did not want to fix it because we bought it out of state. The car only had 3500 miles on it. The other problem was the windshield wipers did not work on high. You do not want to be in florida when it rains without wipers that work on high. After 3 tries, they finally had to cut the wiring harness because it was all corroded. I sure am glad I spent $70,000 for a brand new car. I would never take another vehicle to lott mather Chevrolet in haines's city, FL or recommend them to anyone. As for buying my dream car. . . . . . . Lemon!.

At 3,900 miles my new car was down 1quart of oil. Upon questioning I found this was common problem with 2001 Corvettes. At 15000 miles gm replace pistons but said that it is acceptable by gm stardards for the Corvette to burn a quart of oil every 900 miles. However they won't give me information in writing only to my lawger which I don't feel needed yet. I also had a friend who has same year Corvette as mine and he two is burning oil. It is a know problem even in gm web sites for it mechanics. Please help I'm tired of checking oil and reporting consumption to dealership I didn't purchase a 50,000 car for this.

The engine burns excessive amount of engine oil.
Excessive engine oil use--1 1/2 qts per 2000. Miles Chevrolet advises that normal oil consumption is a qt every 700 miles????? Chevrolet has a upgraded set of rings that stop the excessive consumption but they stonewall customers by telling them that consumption rates are normal at 1qt every 700 miles. Is this not a safety issue since the excessive oil soaks the catalytic converter, thus causing a fire.
Vehicle has excessive oil consumption, and oil contamination of catalytic coverter. Contaminated oil caused vehicle to have high emission due to contaminated catalytic converter. Dealer has yet to be contacted. Please provide further details.
This car has been nothing but problems, steering has locked on me 2 times which I was late for work both times, and is a saftey concern , what if I was in a bad area to be stuck??? the dealer says nothing is wrong with the car but when checking the NHTSA. Gov sites there are tons of cars with the same problems. Chevrolet has gotten rid of the steering lock in 2001 and 2002 why is that because it doesnt operate correctly. The tire pressure was always off on each tire. My fuel gauge is always wrong. Not to include my engine ticks very loud and the dealer says nothing is wrong with that there is also oil leakage and consumption problem. I just want my $50k car fixed. If this does not get resolved I will have to take this a step futher and review legal options. Thank you. Nhtsa for your help. Ref. In ea02-031.

Consumer states engine has burned 3 quarts of oil in only 6000 miles, dealer has changed oil twice and states that this is normal.
Excessive engine oil consumption of 1 quart per 600 miles. Dealer confirms no leaks.
Excessive oil consumption in Corvette z06. 2. 5 quarts used in 2400 miles.
Car has burnt 4 quarts of oil in 6000 miles. Was told by dealer that Chevrolet knows this is a "ring problem" and has yet to issue a revision part to correct problem. Has sent me home with a case of oil telling me that they are already waiting over 3 months for other car owners with same problem and have no idea how long it will take chevy to issue revision part. Car is running terribly. Dealer says this is b/c burnt oil residue is landing on pistons causing car to perform poorly. They can do nothing to help me.
