At 45,000 miles the vehicle suffered from excessive oil consumption and the engine became very loud. The engine was replaced under warranty with a new one. Now at 100,000 miles it has the exact same problem. Our warranty just ran out so they said we are responsible for the damages. The vehicle was maintained very well, I have read many people have the same issue and gm themselves told us they knew about it when the engine was replaced the first time. They extended special coverage for excessive oil consumption on many of the Equinoxes to 10 yrs/100k mi, but neglected to include our vehicle. Gm refuses to check our engine serial number separate from our VIN to verify that it is one of the defective products. Gm needs to know that the problem extends farther than they thought, which is easily seen by searching online and looking at cases like ours. Gm neglected to properly fix our issue the first time and this is potentially a major hazard for many people, they need to actually extend coverage on all vehicles affected. The engine burned 60% of the oil between oil changes, it clatters and soon will stop working.
My engine has been burning oil ever since I bought it about 4 years ago. It is a 2010 chevy Equinox, which I bought used from a dealership. There is a class action lawsuit that was just accepted for reimbursement of cost associated with previous repair, due to the oil burning. Although, I never had to pay to get it repaired since I was putting in oil about every week to two weeks since I found the issue. I'm very upset, because the issue should be a recall for everybody who has the issue to be able to get it repaired. Since the oil issue is known and a class lawsuit has been filed and accepted, it should go for all vehicles, not just the vehicles people didn't look after and let them brake. The oil burning issue is very bad and it will cost me a lot of money to get fixed. Therefore, it should be a recall and I should be allowed to get the issue fixed for free as it is a known problem for this vehicle.
Excessive oil consumption. Brought the car to a chevy dealer and returned with full oil, at ~55000 miles. One month later, after putting on ~700 miles, the oil level marker could merely detect any oil left. Brought it back to the dealer, and was told it took them 1qt oil to top-off (I feel it should be more than that), while they admit even 1qt/700 miles oil consumption is not normal. They've started the monitoring, and we'll see what's happening.
Oil consumption, everytime I get an oil change the car has burnt nearly half the oil that was put in the car in 3000 miles. Also my check engine light keeps coming on for a bad catalytic converter and I know several other Equinox owners that have the same issue.
2010 Chevrolet Equinox. Consumer writes in regards to fuel control system recall notice and several vehicle issues. The consumer stated a warning light illuminated. The dealer reprogrammed a module. The second time the consumer returned to the dealer, the timing chain was replaced. Also, the engine was noisy. In September 2014, the consumer received a letter about excessive oil consumption. In November 2014, the consumer received a letter about the possibility of the steering locking up. The condenser had a small pin hole, that caused fluid to leak out. The compressor was replaced.
Gm did a recall on the rings and pistons of my car. I purchased this vehicle new and told the dealership on numerous occasions that it was using too much oil. They checked it and told me that everything was fine, to keep adding oil and that the car "just uses oil. " now at 98,000 miles later they do a recall and say there is a problem and they only fixed the rings and pistons, which is only part of the problem. My car is using 1 - 1. 5 quarts of oil every 1000 miles. Common sense and mechanics tell me that if a vehicle is using that much oil where is all the exhaust and emissions going, it is going through the catalytic converter. Since I am using three to four times the amount of oil that should be used, then the catalytic converter is working harder. Now my check engine light is on and after having it tested, gm has informed me that I need a new catalytic converter because it is clogged up. It makes since that it would be clogged up since I am burning this excessive amount of oil due to the faulty rings and pistons that gm has already agreed was wrong in the first place. Now, they are wanting to charge me $1100. 00 for a new catalytic converter. This should have been checked and replaced during the recall. They tell me my car has too many miles and their warranty covers the converter for 80,000 miles. I understand I am over this mark and also understand that I brought this matter to their attention on numerous occasions before the 80,000 mile mark. I should not be held responsible for the $1100. 00 to replace the catalytic converter since the problem originated from the rings and pistons. Please help. Thank you.
Excess oil consumption 1 quart per 1000 miles 2010 equinix are well known for excessive oil consumption.
At 58569 miles the engine light was on. The catalytic converter, gasket, and nut were replaced. I began complaining about oil consumption at 72388 miles. At 77313, the engine light was flashing. The dealer got the code p0300. There was a misfire in cylinder #2. The dealer replaced the #2 coil and gasket as well as the spark plugs. At 91968 miles the engine light was on and the catalytic converter was replaced. At 103123 miles the engine light was on and throttle body gasket replaced. At 105185 miles the engine light on again. Replacedspark plugs, reprogramed ecm and tcm. There was a misfire in cylinders 1-3-and 5. The dealer also performed major throttle body service and cleaned the intake. At 112358 miles the car was towed to dealer. The engine light was flashing and dealer said a misfire in cylinder #4 and oil wad found in #2 spark plug well. I check my oil level every week and have been doing so for months. I am putting in at least 1 1/2 quarts of oil every month. I change the oil every 3500 miles whether the vehicle indicates the need or not. I have read many complaints on different websites. The dealers response is that they can get me into a new Equinox. It seems that this oil consumption problem is known by chevy but this SUV has never been recalled for this problem.
Tl- the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that engine lost power and stalled without warning. There were no warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The dealer began observing the oil consumption for over a year prior to the failure. On April 12, 2012, the dealer replaced the cam shaft actuator. After the most recent failure the contact was told by the dealer that the pistons and the rings would need to be replaced. The dealer stated that the most recent repair was a manufacturers suggestion, but the repair will not correct the problem because there is a defect in the engine. The dealer stated that when the engines were cast, there was sand left in the engine and since the engine was not flushed, it caused the engine to lock up over time. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 35,138. Rvk.
14159 recall for some Equinox 2010 2. 4l excessive engine oil consumption and first repair of same issue was done on 2014 and I had four check up and gm added some more oil then they found same issue and I have document that I dont want that pistons to be replaced and they refused to follow my suggestion so far this present car still have a excessive engine oil consumption right now so I have to pay for that repair and they refused to procced under the expired warranty.
I have had many problems with this vehicle regarding electrical, audio, airbag lights coming on and now engine oil. The engine oil was just detected at 80,000 miles however I have complained that my car does not run right since the beginning. They claim that the engine is burning off the oil however I am very good at getting my oil changes around 3000 miles and where is the oil going? its not in my garage or on the engine? I have had my car completely go blank on the dash no indicator lights etc. I have filled a complaint with chevy to no avail. I am very disappointed that now my engine needs to be replaced or maybe just he pistons? at 80,000 miles? this has been going on since I owned it from sept 2009! I think chevy needs to step up and make things right! disappointed. Just for the record I bought this car in California.
During idle from stop light to stop light in city traffic, vehicle began to idle very rough during stops and had reduced power while moving. Eventually it died out at a stop light. General motors reference pip5025 for excessive oil consumption and cylinder damage per dealer repair report. Car has been "repaired" but is still running somewhat rough and is giving off a strong gasoline odor and engine oil smells like gasoline - have another appointment with dealer to have checked out - has not stalled out again since repair though.
Vehicle burns large quantities of oil, often in short periods of time. (we will check oil, it's fine, and then a few days later we've burned two quarts. ) this requires us to pull over rapidly and find new oil to prevent engine failure, making it a major safety hazard. We've burned 1 to 2 quarts of oil every 1,000 to 1,500 miles pretty consistently since March, when we first discovered we were down 3 quarts.
Excessive oil consumption.
Purchased 2010 Equinox LS on 8/14/09. The vehicle has incurred numerous visits to the dealership to correct a major water leakage problem, defective module which controlled dashboard functions including heat and defrost and a severe oil consumption condition which remains unresolved. Complaints of engine knocking were reported to 2 dealerships with no resolve. Approximately 6 weeks ago the vehicle experienced the same knocking and check engine light. The dealer replaced the timing chain, thermostat along with various seals and valves. This past Monday the vehicle experienced the same tapping noise and shuttering, after was determined the vehicle had no oil the vehicle was towed to the dealer were they discovered the car had consumed over six quarts of oil with no visible signs of oil leakage anywhere. The were advised by gm to do an oil consumption test over 5000 miles with a bi-weekly inspection by the dealer. A research of internet forums revealed this situation to be a common complaint with various concessions made to other owners. This is a dangerous defect that can leave a driver stranded in the heat of summer or dead of winter with life threatening possibilites. This matter deserves you immediate attention.
My 2010 chevy Equinox (purchased 05/2010) has continuously had issues when idling or at low speeds in the city or in heavy highway traffic, since about a year after I purchased it. Sometimes this will cause the car to stall. This has been particularly scary and problematic on the highway in rush hour traffic and on the bay bridge during rush hour traffic. What is particularly frustrating is what I am told by the dealership service team - "it's because you're low on oil. " when I explain that I just had an oil change 1,500 miles ago and topped off the oil a week before, they said, "well this car burns a lot of oil, and you were down a quart. You should just check it every week and keep topping it off. " no concern for the fact that I am doing this, and it is stalling. No concern for the fact that this car is 3 years old and burning that much oil. When I ask what type of engine problem would result in this type of oil consumption, they quickly change the subject and say they have found "nothing wrong" or that they are just "going by what gm says to do, since we are only the service team, not the manufacturer. " at this point, I bring my car in anywhere from once every other month to multiple times per month. Sometimes the oil is low; sometimes the check engine light is on. Just last week (10/15), after I started a claim with gm and told the service team that I was filing a complaint, they finally agreed to run an oil consumption test. We did not get that far, though, as my car has been rough idling all week and my check engine light is back on - it's back with the service folks. . . Just 5 days after being there last.
My wife and I bought a preowned 2010 Equinox with low mileage and a short time later I was checking fluid levels and noticed the oil was 2qts low, added oil. Short time later we went on a trip and a while later I checked oil level and it was down a quart. Called chevy dealer where it was bought and they said they would do a oil consumption test to see how munch oil it was using. Dealer ship changed oil and was down a quart. Service technician said he had no ideal where the oil was going, and I told him it was pretty clear that the motor was burning it, number one the tailpipe was black as the ace of spades and there must be a factory defect in the engine. I have spoke with gm head office about this and they did give me a claim number.
