1 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/05/2021

2013 chevy Equinox was taken to mechanic for a check engine light and loss of stabilitrak. My mechanic pulled the codes and said this repair was above their ability and recommended I take to chevy dealer. Chevy's service guy said there was an open recall for excessive oil consumption and I said yes it is using a lot of oil we have had it here for similar oil related issues with no success. Tech comes back with broken timing belts and later a shaved piston $4200 in repairs. When researching this it is directly linked to the recall and chevy wont stand by the repairs and cover the cost because the dealership didn't note excessive oil consumption.

2 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/18/2021

We purchased a used 2013 Equinox for my daughter in 2016 and received regular maintenance including on-time oil changes. On Jan 18 at 1:30 am my daughter was driving home and the check engine light came on, she pulled off to the side of the road and the car shut off. She tried to restart and it wouldn't start. We had the car towed to the local Chevrolet dealership and the first diagnosis was it needed a new drive belt and negative battery cable for $860. They called back the next day with a new diagnosis and said it needed a remanufactured engine which would cost $8,000 because a piston rod blew and damaged the engine. The car has 91,836 miles. Luckily, she was in town, near home and not away at school and wasn't on the interstate when her car broke down. She is safe but I can't help but wonder what if she was on the interstate when this happened. The Equinox is not safe if it can easily shut down with no prior warning. After researching this problem I have learned that many Equinox owners have dealt with this issue and some are on their second and third engines. Unfortunately, this unexpected occurrence puts us in a very awkward, expensive situation. I refuse to pay $8,000 for a new engine for a vehicle that I still owe $6,000 on and the new engine can easily have the same issues. Chevrolet knows about this engine problem and does not want to be held accountable. I will never purchase a chevy car again and will definitely let people know about the Equinox issues.

3 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/14/2021

Numerous oil changes. Had to get a new timing belt. Was told it is an engine issue.

5 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

The car always needed oil, and we did know why til the timing belt went and the engine had to be replaced and it cost us over 2850. 00 then we found out gm put a bad spray oiler for the timing belt as for the going through so much oil we are unsure. I did hear of a lawsuit we just would like our money back for the motor replacement it's a very bad lemon gm on the 2. 4 liter engine they made.

6 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 10/06/2020

Front crankshaft seal has a leak that sprays onto serpentine belt causing belt failure and major oil leak. The seal has been replaced and the problem is occurring again. I have gone through 5 belts in less than a year and too much oil to track. Also unknown airbag and stabilitrac warning lights are on and cause cannot be identified.

7 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

Drive side seat belt is not latching in place, I am not secure or safe. Seat belt will not safely lock in place. This happens stationary or in motion. Paperwork has been sent twice on the the replacement of my engine. Second time was paperwork was sent registered mail which did so rec'd in early Aug but I have still not rec'd a signature of recipient. Which was required.

8 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/15/2020

1) seatbelt light comes on despite having seatbelts secured. It happens when you start the car and stays on throughout all aspects of driving until the car is turned off. 2) service stabilitrac light intermittently flickers on and off while the radio flickers off and on, as though the vehicle were possessed. 3) the previous engine consumed excessive amounts of oil. It resulted in the previous engine being replaced a few months ago. New engine is burning oil just as fast as the old one. Withing one month the dipstick was registering as below the bottom line with 2 months and approximately 3k miles left before next scheduled oil change, per jiffy lube's sticker.

9 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 02/09/2020

Multiple times, I would check my oil preparing for long drives, and I would have to add a quart or 2 of oil because the dipstick was dry. When I asked about it at the dealership, fox motor's negaunee, I was repeatedly told they were known for oil consumption. The last time we drove it, we were driving in marquette mi, when started to sound and run as if it's a diesel motor and the transmission shifted and ran like it was at half power. In the middle of traffic on the highway no higher than 35 mph. We drove it straight to the dealership; they brought it in for service and discovered the timing chain needed to be replaced. Once into service they discovered the rings had failed, it only had just over 84,000 miles, way too soon to have a timing belt failure, or an engine failure. At no time did the dealership mention getting oil consumption tests at our oil changes, when the consumption was brought up, nor were we advised there were service bulletins prior to the engine failure. This is not a rare instance, but has become a critical safety issue. In addition, the engine failure has happened more than once to consumers getting their motors rebuilt only to experience failure another time.

10 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 02/01/2020

The timing belt on my engine went out resulting in my vehicle dying whenever my car idled low. If I didn?t constantly give it some gas, the car would shut off. This would happen at red lights and stop sign where I couldn?t give the car gas, so I?d end up stopping in the middle of an intersection with incoming traffic. I had to get my car repaired and two different mechanics (one at a chevy dealership) said that timing belts are an issue with chevy Equinox. This was the very first repair I needed done on my car and at only 77,000 miles. The mechanic at the dealership said I?d most likely only get another 50,000 miles out of the engine. That would be short of 130,000 miles. I think if timing belts are such and issue with this model of vehicle then there should be a recall on them.

11 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/29/2020

Car was running fine, check engine light came on, called dealership, scheduled appt, drove in to have them look at it. Called me and said that my timing belt was loose and that there was shredded metal throughout, not advised to rebuild or drive as it was very unsafe that I even drove it there in the first place. Needed whole new engine which cost more than what vehicle is worth. Vehicle had just crossed 100,000, no other warning signs. Serviced regularly, no issues noted with engine prior to this occasion.

12 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/24/2019

Car is only 4 years old and has chevy service department certified bad timing belt. Car has verifiable routine maintenance upkept. This is likely a manufacture's defect.

13 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 11/17/2019

Irregular oil consumption and engine problems leading to further repair and continuous diagnosis. Vehicle currently has a mileage of 127,871 and original owner of vehicle. Since February 2019, engine diagnosis is required between oil changes do to low idle and check engine light. Vehicle has stalled while stopped at traffic lights, but stalling has not yet occurred at slow speeds. Dealership has found oil engine level low, causing the timing chains to stretch and creating noise. Performed engine performance restoration service to clean piston rings and changed oil and filter; reset oil life and cleared codes. Dealership recommended to return in 1,000 miles to re-evaluate oil level and perform internal engine repairs. Past repairs included cam, timing belt, and catalytic converter,.

14 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 10/02/2019

High engine oil consumption caused by excessive piston ring wear leading to timing belt replacement and eventual complete engine failure at 75,831 miles.

15 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/20/2019

Regular oil changes at GMC dealership showed high oil consumption. Chevy dealership replaced transmission 2015 under factory warranty. High oil consumption continued. 2018 engine power shuts down car while idling. Took it to my local mechanic replaced transmission. Drove almost 400 miles on "new transmission" ac not working, idles with high pitch sound when fan is running. Now seat belts lights flash and alarm despite seat belts in buckled position. Engine goes to power down /save mode when driving on freeway at 60mph on highway. This power down (reduction) happens stalls and wont drive. Engine continues to shake and rattle after being put in park and removing key (when turned off).

16 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 12/18/2018

1. Excessive oil consumption from day 1 - was told it was normal, 2. Fluttering sound in the engine when cranked. 3. Idling rough for a looooonnnng time. 4. Replaced both intake & exhaust cam sensors 5. Removed and replaced fan drive belt. 6. Car started shifting roughly. 7. Started idling so low that I had to keep my foot on the gas so it wouldn't shake violently and cut off. Mostly when I was stopped but started shaking and cutting off when I just slow down. Same thing when I back up. Also when I slow down to make a turn. Last time I drove it (2 days ago) it shook violently and cut off on me 4 times. Waiting for the dealer to call me back now. . Please make gm/Chevrolet do a recall!!! thanks for your help!.

17 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 10/16/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Equinox. While driving various speeds, the instrument panel went black. The vehicle was taken to moss bros. Auto group (12625 auto mall drive, moreno valley, California 92555, (951) 485-3500) to be diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. Afterwards, the power steering seized and the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact stated that the vehicle would not restart when prompted. The vehicle was towed to tom bell Chevrolet (800 alabama street, redlands, California 92374, (909) 283-0690) where it was determined that the vehicle exhibited "low voltage". The battery was replaced in 2016. The contact stated that the diagnostic trouble codes were erased; therefore, the dealer could not duplicate the "low voltage" failure reading. Additionally, an alarm sounded, the seat belt warning indicator illuminated, and the instrument panel gauge readings were inconclusive. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures and provided case number: 8-4836904116. The failure mileage was 10,155.

18 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

Having issues with my chevy's timing belt. This seems to be a known issue for gm and they refuse to do anything to fix it. They keep blaming it on oil consumption.

19 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

My 2011 chevy Equinox has had a lot of problems, I got the car with 49,000 miles about 3 years ago. I had to replace the timing chain already due to excessive oil consumption. Now my catalytic converter is bad due to oil consumption. My car now has around 130,000 miles and I seen there is a class action suit for the 2011 chevy Equinox for excessive oil consumption. It also poses a safety risk as it can cause engine failure while the cars are in motion. There are times I add a whole quart of oil and 3 days later I hear a ticking noise and my oil is completely gone. My car conks out at stop signs once in a while, it takes time to accelerate. Also my passenger side seat belt does not work it's stuck to the point where you can't use it.

20 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/21/2018

The engine on my 2012 chevy Equinox "died" unexpectedly after ~67000 miles. It occurred while driving, shortly after I had exited I-95. It resulted in an immediate loss of power that required me to swerve onto the grass beside the road to avoid getting hit by the car behind me. Fortunately, I was alone in the car, and none of my children were present. The car was inspected by mechanics at the dealership who reported that the timing belt had failed, which caused irreparable damage to the engine. A quick internet search resulted in multiple reported cases of 2012 Equinoxes that had similar issues. Fortunately, the engine failure occurred after I had exited the highway. If it had occurred 15 minutes sooner, I would have lost power on the scudder's fall bridge over the delaware river and would have been in significantly more danger. When asked whether the dame was the result of a material defect in the engine, the gm representative I spoke with and the customer service rep at the dealership were non-responsive and would not comment.

21 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 06/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox. While the contact was retrieving items from the vehicle, the front passenger tire exploded unexpectedly while in park. Also, while driving various speeds, various warning indicators, including the air bag, check engine, and power steering, illuminated intermittently. In addition, the serpentine belt fractured on three separate occasions due to a defective pulley inside the engine. The contact took the vehicle to various independent mechanics to have it serviced; however, the serpentine belt and the warning indicator failures persisted. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 8,000.

22 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 03/22/2018

Timing belt failed within two years of the first time being fixed. First time was when vehicle was purchased used at approx 123k, second time it has failed is approx 179k. There is an ongoing oil consumption issue with the vehicle. I have heard that there is a recall on the oil issue that was not publically announced and I would like to find out why it wasnt if in fact this is an issue. Timing belt should not fail twice . Took vehicle in to shop after vehicle began shaking violently and jumping while stopped at a light, in drive with the breaks on. When I went to drive, vechicle would drive but had severe loss in poer and was vibrating the whole time. Upon taking to the shop and having an engine diagnostic test done, it was confirmed that the timing chain was indeed stretched out and would need to be repaired at a cost of $2500. This repair had been made two years prior as well , having had to replace the chains and such due to this recurring and ongoign oil issue.

23 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced a rapid oil consumption failure. Also, the engine shook and vibrated while idling. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (medbev Chevrolet, 11001 w. I-70 frontage road n, wheat ridge, CO) where it was diagnosed that the timing belt had stretched and needed to be replaced. While repairing the timing belt, the mechanic determined that the engine was also damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 70,000.

24 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/31/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. Also, the instrument cluster indicators were flashing and the check engine, seat belt, and tire system indicators were illuminated. Furthermore, the vehicle made an abnormal clicking noise while attempting to start. The vehicle was towed to scranton Chevrolet of norwich (774 w thames st, norwich, CT 06360) where it was diagnosed that the negative terminal wire needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.

25 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 10/16/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the engine seized and the timing belt fractured while the vehicle was stopped at a traffic light. The vehicle was pushed to the road shoulder. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the engine was replaced. The manufacturer refused to replace the engine because the contact had the oil changed by an independent mechanic rather than a gm dealer, which voided the warranty. The contact called bob grimm Chevrolet (2271 s main st, morton, IL 61550), but had not heard back. The failure mileage was 75,000.

26 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/21/2017

Every time I stop at a stop light or a stop sign my car will start idling really bad and will come up with the code engine stability. If I do not put it in neutral the car will stall. It does have 131000 miles on it and I had to replace the manifold twice and the timing belts, upstream 02 sensor and have had my mechanic look at it three times. Every time he has replaces some different sensors and for the first few days my car will run then it will progressively get worse and I have to put my car in neutral to get it to stop but even in neutral it will still idle.

27 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/15/2017

Less than 60,000 miles and it needs a new engine. Engine light came on and power was reduced. Car idles very rough, and somewhat loud. I liken it to a school bus. Luckily I was less than 5 miles from home and did arrive safely. Car was looked at by two different mechanic shops and both have the same diagnosis: timing belt/chain jumped and now needs a new engine.

28 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 04/17/2017

"takata recall" the timing belt. Timing belt stretched. Know for fact that 5 other Chevrolet Equinox 2008 has had the same problem brought to the same automacanic shop. Ours would be the 6th known in hastings minnesota. Would like a recall and have problem fixed and paid for by the manufacture. While driving the vehicle. The engine light would go on and when brought in several times, they kept saying it was the gas cap. Replaced gas cap and still several times engine light would come on and the dealership kept saying it was the gas cap, even after they replaced gas cap. The same thing kept happening over and over. They denied anything wrong until the timing belt stretched and cannot drive. For a period of 2 years this went on and on. They will not repair the problem unless we pay 2000 dollars plus to repair timing belt. The dealership is the ones that we took the vehicle to. Had a second opinion done and they claimed we where the 7th car with the same identical problem. We bought the vehical from the dealership. Always brought to them with any mechanical probems tp be repaired. All I am asking for is the dealership to repair problem. Apparently they have overlooked the problem several times and blamed it on my gas cap. I am parapelegic on right side. Only drive when neccessary. Had 15,000 miles on it when I purchaced it from dealership. It has 77,008 miles on it when we brought it into the dealership on April 17, 2017. Vam code is p0017-crankshaft/camshaft correlation bank 1. . . . . P0008-engine system performance, exhaust camshaft not moving when commanded. . . Recommended new timing chains, chain guides, chain tentioners, cam actuators. . . Concern#2 customer states the passenger front door does not lock/unlock. Found the door lock actuator faulty. Replaced the front door passenger door lock actuator/latch assembly. . Paid . . . Main concern is timing belt that is faulty.

29 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 01/30/2017

Comments: I am a chevy owner of a 2011 Equinox and not happy about having to pay for something that should be a recall. The timing chain is held on by a small bolt which came loose and belt broke and busted a head and all my rocker arms. This screw up my repair man said is because it was designed wrong and says once it is done there is no clue when it could happen again in the future. I have read about this happening to various drivers and they as well as me being told your VIN number is not in the recall. I want to know why it is not and what is going to be done about this. The repair bill is between $2500 and $3000 and I also read that it is usually out of warranty when it happens. I am so mad at gm at the moment and thinking about going with another company after I sell this one. 713-434-3499 nights 630-337-6837 days 4139 rosalind lane houston, TX 77053 VIN #2cnalfec1b6456225 111,000 miles towing $200 labor and repair $3800 the timing chain guide bolt is so small I am surprised it lasted as long as it did. As much as I have read on recalls of this happening I would like to be reimbursed by gm I was driving to work and it died about two blocks from my job. I started it back up and started down the road and it would only let me go 45 mph and traction control icon came on and then where speed is it had a ! engine power is reduced. I limped into work and parked it going 20 mph. I do have pictures of the bolt and my dash.

32 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

My vehicle has 84,000 miles on it. About 3 weeks ago the check engine light came on for code p0008. After further review the dealer discovered I had a stretched timing chain that needed to be replaced at the tune of $3,000. I have changed my oil as stated in the manual and check the oil levels periodically. The service schedule in the manual indicates that the belts need to be checked for wear at 150,000. The timing chain should surely last longer than the belts. Chevy issued a customer service bulletin with regard to premature timing chain wear on all 2008 Equinox's except the sport (which is what I have). After doing some online digging I have discovered many other people with the 2008 sport that are having the same issue. I contacted gm and they stated since my VIN was not included in the recall there was nothing they could do.

33 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/03/2015

The car started to sound like an old jalopy, after having the car checked out it was determined that the timing was off and it was burning massive amounts of oil without the engine oil light coming on. The injectors are clogged and the engine is all clogged up, so it¿s messing with the timing belt. It¿s been 2 month since I took it into the shop and it¿s looking like the engine needs rebuilt or replaced, a complete piece of junk 3 years old never any warning from the car about low oil or the manufacture it¿s a travesty.

34 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

My 2011 Chevrolet Equinox has a really bad ticking coming from the timing belt area. This car has been idling rough and its very loud do to the ticking coming from side of engine. It sound like a 30 year old car and its been doing it since 66,000 miles.

35 Engine Belts And Pulleys problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Equinox

Failure Date: 08/30/2014

While driving the 2011 Equinox will jerk or jump as if being hit from behind while attempting to accelerate between 2nd and 3rd gear. The check engine light will not turn off. The stability track light comes on and off periodically while in motion. When the car is being turned off it shakes as if the motor is going to fall out. I have to turn off the ac before turning the ignition switch to off position to decrease some of the shaking, yet it does not prevent it. Furthermore while driving at approx. . 30-35mphs, the car jumps to 5th gear without allowing to accelerate any faster in the mist of traffic. The 2011 Chevrolet Equinox shakes and makes a wining noise while idling. It does so to the point where the hood is shaking. The car only has 54000 miles on it. Also I have to constantly adjust the seatbelt while driving because it cuts into my neck which is very uncomfortable and a huge distraction. This car will now go forward in drive but it will not reverse.
