Loud Engine Noise Problems of Chevrolet Equinox - part 1

Vehicle stalled when driven or stopped at traffic light. Abnormal noises coming from engine. When engine oil was checked, no visible oil was available in the dipstick. Inserted dipstick a couple of times to ensure correct measurement. Extremely low oil left in vehicle. Vehicle seems to be burning oil. Diagnostic trouble codes read by obd2 tool were: p0011,p0191,p228d,p0089 and p0014. When investigating online, this is a common problem with the vehicle's engine. This seems to be a design flaw being ignored by the oem.

When driving I heard a loud pop noise and the vehicle loss power. When looking at vehcile customer noticed oil leaking. Customer then looked at dip stick and there was no oil in vehicle. Customer got an oil change at jiffy lube 0n 11/8/2022.

On 9/25/21, my engine light came on. I went to the dealership. The temperture light and the check oil light never came on. When the service man checked the oil he said there was almost no oil left in the engine. My dashboard said that I had 18% oil. The engine was also making a loud noise and stopping was difficult. The dealership did an oil change and talked to me about having the pistons changed, close to $3,000. I had heard the engine noise once before, I bought the car to the dealership and the service person refused to do an oil change and he did not check my oil. The oil percentage at that time was between 33 and 38%. The service person kept ranting that the company was not going to pay for the oil change it was too early. I have a buyer protection plan that pays for my oil changes. The dealership wants to know how bad the oil consumption problem is so they are having me come to the dealership so they can check my oil in between this oil change. A few days after the oil problem, I received in the mail from gm alerting me for the first time about the oil consumption vrs. Dash board oil consumption usage as indicated by the cars computer. According to one of the service persons, general motors has known about the oil consumption problem but they have not alerted their customers. My warranty has expired, both my husband and I rely on social security as our source of income. This could have been and engine fire, loss of life could have happened. General motors should have issued a recall and alerted their customers of this serious problem, instead of choosing to ignore it. They should realize that a dead customer can not drive a car. If the engine had blown up because of the inaccurate oil reading, alerting the customer sooner may have prevented the problem. Pro active works better than hiding your head in the sand. I am telling you about this problem so that others never experience what I did. This may be the last gm car I ever buy.

2014 model year chevy Equinox. My car was produced in 9-2013, and has had continuous high oil consumption since purchase. Every few weeks it is making a loud noise after start up, and I am having to add oil (3 qts yesterday of the 5w-30 dexron oil as listed on the cap).

On 2/26/20 in the morning, the car was parked when I turned the car on and the engine rattle loudly. I turned off immediately. My husband was with me and asked me to turn it on again. This time it only made loud noises but it did not turn on. It was towed 2 days later to a mechanic in finksburg, MD. He said the engine was destroyed and needed to be replaced. The mechanic and us had observed that when the car reached 125k miles, the oil consumption increased and had to be refilled on a weekly basis. Before the engine broke, the car was worth about $4k. The mechanic says it will be $8k to $8,500 to replace the engine. I, of course don't have the money and now I don't have a car. There should be an engine recall on the gm 2014 chevy Equinox. It's unconscionable that gm has so many problems with their Equinox engines and they keep selling them. I hope I can join a class action lawsuit even if it takes years to force gm to accept responsibility for their fraudulent practices that cause such hardship and emotional distress to us trusting consumers.

The car is having oil consumption problems and makes very loud noises when starting up and idling. I took it to my dealer and was told it probably had piston ring wear and will probably need a new engine due to oil blockage. The car only had 61000 miles and had always been serviced by the dealer for all maintenance on time. I am very disappointed with action from chevy on the problem because the car had been very well taken of and we like the car overall. I just can't afford to replace engines due to poor manufacturing. My dealer had been no help and just acts like it's normal to replace a engine due to oil consumption problems,. I have research a few forums and have found alot of Equinox owners are experiencing the same problems. I always loved chevy but if I have a choice I will never buy again. Thanks.

2019 chevy Equinox turbo hose blew off. The retaining clip failed to properly hold hose in place. The hose blew completely off making a loud noise. The vehicle then immediately went into low power mode. All acceleration was gone. Loss of power created the rpm's to increase while going up hill the engine struggling to climb. . The vehicle lost speed all the way up the hill. The turbo was useless at this point. Very unsafe to suddenly lose that much power to yoour vehicle. Gm has to find a solution to this problem. My local dealer is not very helpful.

While driving at freeway speeds, there was a loud pop sound and then the engine went into reduced power mode & the check engine light came on. Dealer states that it is the charge cooler air tube that becomes detached from throttle body. Multiple service writers have stated there is no official fix from gm. Two dealers have claimed to "fix" my issue, but it went into the shop again today for the fourth time for the same issue. First occurrence was at 149 miles. Next three were between 7500-8200 miles. The car has been at the dealerships three times the last 6 days.

The Equinox burns excessive oil and make loud noise if the oil get low. No low oil light indicator does not work. After monitoring the engine consumptions for 2 months, I have to put a quart of oil every 300/400 miles which is every two weeks.

Windshield wipers stopped working while driving. Check engine light comes on while driving and oil runs out well before recommend oil change and no low oil warning lights come on. Car burns a lot of oil and makes a loud noise from engine but told that this is normal for this brand.

Have had the car less than a year. Had it in the service shop 4-6 times for noisy breaks and squeal in the front coming from engine. Every time you put on the breaks it makes an awful noise. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 74,986.

Purchased Equinox at the end of June with 85,557 miles. Frequently checked the "oil life" percentage. At 25%, the car started making an awful noise. At first it was mainly when I turned to the left. He went on to explain that the noise it was making was from something knocking (pistons, rod) and if he were to do an oil change, he would be responsible for the engine should it "blow". He went on to inform me that the engine is going to be needed to replaced, it could "blow" in 3 hours or in 3 months. In tears, I asked how much that would (guesstimate) cost and he told me easily $5,000, half of what I paid for the damn car. His last comment to me was, "I would suggest you drive right up to autozone and purchase 4 quarts of oil because you have no oil"!! reallly? my oil light did not come on, my percentage was 25%. . . . And I'm going to have to have work done to it that I simply cannot afford. I have since discovered there is a class action law suit including 2010-2017 Equinoxes.

The manufacturer was however no further assistance was offered. The contact referenced GMC special coverage campaign 16118 however GMC denied to cover the vehicle due to oil changes not being performed by the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 56897. I car is consuming excessive oil. My car was completely out of oil 2 weeks after an oil change, the car was making a loud noise and hesitating when you stepped on the gas. The piston rings and seals are bad. I am 19,000 miles over the warranty. Gm is covering the 2011&2012 model up to 120000 miles. I took it to the dealer and the did an oil consumption test. They called chevy and they would not cover it. They offered to pay 10% of the repair. I owe a lot of money on this car, it is a known failure and there should be a recall.

Gm is aware of an oil consumption issue on 2010my+ chevy Equinox and GMC terrain with the 2. 4l ecotec engine. They have so far issued service bulletins for 2010-2012my to replace the piston rings and timing chain because in this situation, the timing chain can stretch causing it to skip several teeth and cause engine damage. I complained about excessive oil consumption (1 quart every ~1000 miles) to the dealer. The dealer is instructed to do an oil consumption test by gm. 200 miles after we began this oil consumption test, I started the car one morning and there were loud sounds coming from the engine compartment. I called for a tow to the dealer and they said the engine was severely damaged and a new engine is recommended. Gm doesn't want to take ownership for this known issue. Bulletin sb-10058791-5041.

Lifters make loud noise at all times when engine is running.

Valve on engine is loose causing engine to rattle and make loud noises when starting and driving. Engine is shaking can't afford to replace engine too much money just got the car still owe $14,000 on the car not under warranty any longer according to warranty company.

My 2014 Equinox uses 1. 5 to 2. 0 ots. Of oil every 1500 - 2000 miles. The engine oil sensor does not indicate any problems or low oil capicaty. My 2014 Equinox makes a loud roaring noise from the rear end on both sides and now will start to shake sometimes when driving, when I apply the brakes it makes a bumping sound.

This is a fwd model with 2. 4l engine. The transmission 3-5-r plate failed at 67,000 miles and the transmission was ruined. When it failed it caused acceleration and speed problems while the vehicle was on a major highway but there was no check engine light initially. The car limped a few miles home stalling out completely once a block from home, it would not go into reverse and had to be towed to the dealer for diagnosis and repairs. I was the original owner of the vehicle it was purchased 06/11/2011. The vehicle also had oil consumption issues and rough idle at this time. The vehicle had its cam shaft actuators replaced in August 2011 after the engine made very loud noises with about 2000 miles on the car. I traded the car in 3 days after the dealership replaced the transmission because I did not trust the car.

Was out running errands with our two children and the vehicle was running a little rough - almost died twice while at stoplights. Had previously voiced multiple concerns to dealership on oil consumption recall. No low oil notification on vehicle would ever display, and was told by the dealership that this model was not equipped with a notification (which we thought was very odd). Finally got vehicle home and as I pulled into driveway the vehicle died; went to restart and made awful sound wouldn't turn over. Was completely out of oil with over 1,500+ miles left until recommended oil change. Talked to gm cs and turns out our vehicle should be giving a computer notification on the dashboard for low oil. Thankful it didn't happen during my errands since it could have died at a busy intersection or on the interstate and we would have been put in danger.

I was turning left on a green light at the corner of argyle and oakleaf suntrust bank when the car slipped into neutral and I was stuck in oneway opposite traffic until I turned off the engine and restarted it and then was a ble to go into drive, I was almost in a serious accident with several cars. Then I was traveling north on hwy 295 and I had it in cruise control and I could not get it to quit until I turned off the engine. The power train was slipping after I had taken it to the chevy dealer and they said it was fixed but less than a year later it started doing the same thing as before, slipping, making loud scratching noises. Rubbing noises and it smelled funny like it was burning but there was no fire.
