I have experienced at least 6 power steering failures while driving in the past 6 months (July 2020 thru Jan 2021) that are extremely dangerous. Failures have happened from 15 mph to 60 mph. Electric assist shuts off and warning indicator for power steering service comes on. Do not need to be turning in any significant way or in any particular direction to trigger it. Happened on hot day in July and cold day in January and times in between. Steering, especially at low speeds, becomes very difficult. Power steering can usually be restored by stopping vehicle and turning SUV off for tens of seconds, sometimes after multiple attempts. Power steering fuse seems to be fine. It seems like gm has had similar problems in other vehicles. I have not sought repair yet because I can't produce the problem on demand.

When in-motion at my power steering fails, the wheel seems to grab and my control of the vehicle is momentarily not in my control. It happens on straight aways and most often in slow speed turns. My concerns are the incidents that might happens in busy traffic and on wet & iced roadways. This has been happening in the last 1000plus miles and my service power steering notice has flashed at least 2 times. I am scheduled for service today.

I had my rear brakes replaced and then a week later the service stabilitrak light came on. I took it back to the dealership I got my brakes replaced at and the light went off and they didn't find anything wrong. The light went off and on intermittently for weeks and then finally turned off. Next I started having problems getting the key out of the ignition after turning the car off. I would have to turn the car back on, put my foot on the brake, and turn it off again to get the key out sometimes several times in a row. Now I drove my car and parked and everything was fine and then I turned it on a few hours later and the power steering failed. I took it to the dealership and they say the power steering control module is bad and needs to be replaced. My issues are the exact same as many other drivers have noted and my car is not part of a recall, but the power steering suddenly failing with no warning light months after the dealership said it was fine and replaced brakes seems odd. There is obviously a defect to the power steering in the Equinox that's leading to erratic warning lights, key removal difficulties, and power steering suddenly going out. Chevy needs to do something!.

On 3/31/15, chevy dealer that sold us the car replaced the steering gear subject to bulletin 14232, because we got a letter from gm advising us to get it done. On 10/17/16, power steering failed during a turn on city street, causing emergency braking and near miss. The power steering froze up, and the wheel would not turn. This happened near the end of a 10-mile commute. On 10/18/16, this scenario was repeated near the end of a 10-mile commute. The car was towed at this time to the same dealer. On 10/25/16, dealer returned car to us un-repaired, saying they could not duplicate the problem, the car is out of warranty, and that the problem is a new one. They offered to repair the car for $400. We told the dealer this is a known problem, that they replaced the steering gear that is currently failing, and that there is a ten year non-warranty window on this type of safety repair. On 10/26/16 we called Chevrolet customer service to complain. They got back to us on 10/27/16 and offered to fix the car for $400. This is a dangerous if intermittent problem that is known to gm, and they are obliged to fix it. There is at least one other case (NHTSA id #10689932) of steering failing after steering gear replacement pursuant to bulletin 14232.

17 yr old daughter driving home from school and power steering failed. Dealer diagnosed problem as a failed power steering module. Cost to replace $730. 00. Seems that with all the complaints and similar recalls on other gm vehicles, gm should issue a recall as this is obviously a known defect and has the potential to result in serious or fatal injury.

2007 Chevrolet Equinox power steering control module failure. Service stabilitrak light and message appeared, power steering was working when I parked the car. A few hours later, I cranked the car and the power steering was completely non-functional. Extremely hard to turn wheel, could cause crash when vehicle cannot turn correctly. Took to dealership, technician stated the power steering control module (computer) was bad and needed to be replaced.

Power steering failure. Steering locked up. Vehicle could be steered only with extreme manual effort. It occurred regardless of the speed of the vehicle, from 0 to 35 during this incident. When wheel was turned it would not return to previous position. For example when turning a corner, the vehicle would not straighten out when the turn was completed unless the wheel was manually pulled back, again with extreme effort. Local dealership service department was contacted but had no knowledge of any such problem. Days later the power steering returned to normal by itself! then the failure happened again without warning. This is a very dangerous situation!.

I took my car in for inspection and general maintenance. For almost a year and a half I'd been getting an intermittant stabilitrak alarm. It would reset itself upon restart. . At the dealer (tom clark Chevrolet, mckeesport, PA. ) the power steering locked up. The service manager informed me that the power steering motor had failed. My out-of-pocket expense for relacement is $480. 00. Apparently my warranty does not cover the expense. My gut feeling tells me the whole stabilitrak/ power steering motor issue has been known from day one and I should not have been responsible for payment on defective parts/design.
I own a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox, and since I bought it, I have had several issues with the power steering. The first time, I started the vehicle and the power steering went out briefly. I had to use excessive force to turn the steering wheel. Another time, I was on the highway when the steering wheel got very hard on me, and I couldn't move the steering wheel, extremely hard to turn the wheel. When it happens, I shut the vehicle off and re-started it, sometimes the power steering works and sometimes it doesn't. The tracking control and service stabilitrak warning lights came on since the first time. It had happened intermittenly for 3 years. Until I took it to an independet mechanic. The technician diagnosed power steering control module failure. I had to spent a lot of money to fix the problem. Recently, I have had another issue, the key gets stuck. The key will not come out of the ignition when turning off the vehicle. I put the car in park, turn the key off, the engine turns off, but the key will not come out of the ignition. After numerous attempts of jiggling the key and trying to move the steering wheel, I get the key to turn. All this is dangerous and the same time frustrating. Fortunately, I have not been involved in a crash.
I own a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox with 77,000 miles. After pulling into a parking spot at a retail store, I turned the car off and went inside. Upon returning, after starting the car, I immediately noticed that the steering wheel was virtually unmovable. I thought the engine had stalled out but realized that it was still running. Then I noticed the "service stabilitrak" message on the dic. Drove the car home with great difficulty and looked for the cause of the problem. Only after going online and reading about the scores of individual complaints for this power steering failure did I realize that a very serious problem exists. I went to the local dealership for repairs and was told the problem was the power steering control module. After paying the repair costs of over $660 I asked if there were any recalls to cover this major safety issue. The answer was "no". It is seriously unbelievable that such an obviously widespread problem has continued without so much as an acknowledgment from gm that this is a recurring problem in an Equinox. However, I did get somewhat of an acknowledgment from the service person at the dealership who told me that this was a common problem. All in all, probably my last gm purchase.
I took my 2006 chevy Equinox to dealership for power steering failure. We were losing steering functionality while driving. Dealer did not find anything wrong. Problem continued and after 2nd visit I was informed the entire steering column and motor needs to be replaced. I see from internet message boards this is a common problem with this vehicle. Dealer and gm does not consider this a safety issue and requires auto owners to repair the vehicle at our cost.

2006 chevy Equinox. Upon turning on the car, in cool weather(25degreesf),the power steering failed to provide power assist. Drove approximately 5 miles like this. Later that evening around 1 hour later, went out and power steering worked properly. First and only time it happened to date. Went to dealer to have it checked and they found nothing wrong, no failure or codes. Warranty expires in 2 weeks.
