Twice the power steering stopped and the car was extremely hard/impossible to steer. First time was when parking and after having the engine off for and hour I started it up and everything was fine, so did not work thought it was just a fluke. Second time was going around a curve on an onramp to an interstate highway and the steering acted almost like it locked, no control hit a light pole and car is damaged extensively.

December 22 2014 steering wheel locks up again while my son was making a left turn, crashed, and hit an electrical pole, bust his lip and hit his head. State farm ins CO total the car. January 2015 got a letter from gm stated that this 2006 Hhr may be equipped with powering steering loss. July 2014 gm said this loss was not due the loss of my son accident, clearly it was and refuse to pay for any damages. I have yet to hear about this problem with those cars. I want my son compensated for this loss. What should I do?.
I was driving down the highway with my children in the vehicle and the power steering went out on me. I could not turn or do anything thankfully we did not end up in an accident. So far it has not done it again but I know im not the only one with this type of vehicle that is doing this. This should be recalled. It is a safety issue.
Driving in my neighborhood, the power steering went out with a warning in the dashboard. I stopped, turned off the car and restarted it and it worked again. The second time this occured, I was on the interstate having traveled for about 30 minutes when it went out. It has increased in frequency daily to the point now that every time I get into the car it goes out within about 2 minutes.
The power steering turned off on the freeway. Looked online and this appears to be a common problem with Chevrolet Hhr's. Also noticed that gm has recalled this issue in canada but not the us. Would like to know why they haven't recalled it. The estimated cost to repair appears to be $300 to $500.
I was just backing the car out as normal and then there was a clicking and the dinging bell of an alarm the power steering blinked on dash. It became hard to maneuver. I could not do anything. I turned the car off and it was fine and I backed out but when switch to drive the same thing happened. Lucky I was just starting my day and at home. I see there is a recall on my ignition but I got confuse is the power steering is only on the newer Hhr?.
My power steering has started to go out while driving. This is extremely dangerous as it can happen at any moment without warning. My vehicle is not part of the recall as it is only for 2009-2010 and it should be. If I am taking a turn and the power steering goes out the vehicle wants to go straight and it could cause me to crash. I don't feel that at only 76,000 miles on the car that I should have to pay to replace their faulty product. Any help would be appreciated.
On sept. 11 I was driving at a rate of 45 mph when my car dinged and power steering came across the digital screen. I was able to manually steer. Once the car was turned off and turned back on the power steering was okay for about an hour and then it went out again. The car had to be turned off and turned back on. Over the weekend while awaiting service, the power steering was going out every 2 to 3 miles. This morning 9/14/14 the power steering was completely out and would not come back on. I made it to the dealer ship and was made aware of a power steering recall in which my car did not fall under. I searched gm's website about this recall and found this notation on the website: "in addition, 309,160 non-turbocharged Chevrolet Hhrs from the 2006-2008 model years (and several hundred 2009 models) and 96,324 Saturn ions from the 2003 model year that are not subject to these recalls will be given lifetime warranties for replacement of the electronic power steering motor. . While driving the power steering went out.
Power steering stopped working multiple times while my 16 yr old was driving.
The power steering is going out at least 3 times a day while drive.
Lost all electronic power and steering and shut off wound up in the ditch which stopped the car key would not turn to the off posiposition.
All electronic shut off no brakes no steering wound up in the ditch key would not turn to the off posiposition.
This started 3 days ago. The power steering showed on the dash and I had no power steering. Reading the manual for this issue a year ago it said to turn the car off and then restart the car and the steering would reset itself. However the issue progressed and today was going out every few miles. And I was just at the Chevrolet service for another recall and asked about this issue and they told me they don't have the parts and that my car was not on the list. This is a bad situation and very unsafe. I believe the power steering will be gone completely in the next few days. I would really appreciate it if something could be done right away as this is my primary vehicle and I use it to get back and forth to work. Thank you.
Driving down the highway at the speed limit with a tractor trailer behind me and the power steering went out and since then its been going in and out all the time even at slower speeds after a exhausting search I seen a lot of complaints with the same issue with this model car and I also seen they did do a recall for the same issue with the 2009 chevy Hhr they need to do a recall with the 2006 chvy Hhr as it is doing the same thing as the 2009 my phone number is 518-231-8070 christopher lent did get a diagnostic done thru a chevy dealer and it came back as the electric power steering motor seems like this is a known issue with the Hhr and chevy isn't doing anything about it please get this issue fixed im a working person and the money for the motor isn't easy to come by living in NY please feel free to call me regarding this issue and anyone can google this problem and see how many people are having the same issue with this model car this is the recall information for the 2009 chevy Hhr NHTSA campaign number: 14v153000 this is regarding the steering in the chevy Hhr 2009 the same problem is in the 2006 chevy Hhr please call regarding this issue and what can be done with this.
I was driving my Chevrolet Hhr 2006 with my 1 and 2 year old when the power steering shut off completely and made it very difficult to maneuver my vehicle. Now it doesn't work at all. This is a very dangerous situation and every time I attempt to contact Chevrolet about this situation, they state the steering recall is not on my car. I have read 100's of complaints on this exact same issue, why isn't it resolved yet? does someone have to die first before they issue a recall?.
Driving down the I-80 at 75 miles per hour. Went to pull out to pass a semi truck, alarm went off, power steering showed on drivers instrument cluster. As I tried to move back into slower lane I noticed I had no power steering. At first exit I pulled off . Turn car off. After a shirt break restarted car to try to make it 20 miles to home thinking power steering was completely gone. To my surprise it was working again. Drove about 5 miles out again so I just keep going to home. Called gm customer service they stated I am not part of the recall issued on Hhr's but I know there is a service bulletin on this issue.
This has been an ongoing problem with my 2006 Hhr. I replaced solenoids and it stopped for a few years . I am sick of it I called chevy years ago and they wanted me to pay to have it looked at with no guarantees, I already paid a mechanic hundreds and had a readout for them. I almost crashed into a semi truck exiting hwy one morning taking my daughter to school another exciting hwy also I have a list 2013/2014 now I was driving local and in the middle of turning power steering went out yet again. I was relaxed not ready for it. . . It has been going on off and on for years. I replaced fuse as told and I thought it fixed the problem for a few weeks nothing . I could put down at least 10 dates when I have had close calls with this problem. . . I have read 1000's of complaints on power steering problems & shifter with 2006 Hhr on different sites. Why has nothing been done? amazing a big company can get away with this . They wait until a person loses their life before they do anything.
I have a 2006 chevy Hhr and on Sunday the power steering stopped working. I googled the problem and found a gm media release relating to the power steering. . Read more...
I was driving my 2006 chevy Hhr to the store and as I was pulling in the dash read power steering and my power steering went out. I stop the car in the parking lot of the store and went in. I came back out and started and had no problem. I did not drive my car the next day. So Monday I was headed for work and was going down the highway and my power steering did the same thing. And almost caused a wreck. I pulled off the highway and took it nice and slow to work and had my car towed to the dealership to have the recalls fixed. I got my car back today (Tuesday July 8, 2014) and was not three blocks away from the dealership and power steering did it again. I started looking around on the internet and see where there is a recall for 2009-2011 chevy Hhr that are doing the same thing as my car. However I did see that more 2006 chevy Hhrs are doing the same thing and would like for to you look into the fact that this could be a recall also. I truly believe it is.
When I was driving, I heard alert from my car. Then I saw "power steering" on the screen. After that, I couldn't turn my power steering anymore. I only could drive straight ahead. It was dangerous, I felt lucky that it didn't happen on highways. My baby and my wife were in the car with me at that moment. I only saw gm recall 2009 and 2010 Hhr, but not 2006. I hope gm will recall for 2006 Hhr.
Just after I had a ignition switch installed from a recall , I was driving to work at 55 miles an hour when the steering stop working and was forced to the side of the road. I turned off the motor and restated it and the steering started working again. This has happed at least once a day for the last two months and I could turn off the switch and back on and it would start working again. It does not matter how fast or slow or if I'm at a stop light it has stopped working. I have took the car to the dealer and told them of the problem all they said that they would call the district manager to see what they can do. This was this morning and I will call them back tomorrow to find out what they will do or not do. This is very scary and I will not let my wife drive the car for that reason. If I had not been on my toes watching what I was doing while driving I might have had a accident. When it does go out it is very hard to steer and if I was in traffic and have to make a sudden turn I would not be writing this message to you to complain about this problem with the car.
