3 Fuel Injection problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 09/26/2008

I own a 2008 Chevrolet Impala that take e85 fuel. On two separate occasions, I've filled up with e85 and driven out the entire tank of e85 fuel, then switched back to 87 octane. With driving 10 - 20 miles, my check engine light comes on and I'm directed by my onstar service to report the dealership. The dealership informed me on both occasions, that my fuel system did not recognize the change in alcohol levels between the e85 and 87 octane; the reason for the alert. The fuel system is not able to tell that I've switched from e85 to 87 and reports a failure in the fuel injection system. This cause my remote start to not work. I have to report to the dealership for them to manually reset the fuel system that monitors this.

4 Fuel Injection problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 03/31/2007

Driving on highway check engine light came on reduced power light came on, few seconds later engine stalled. Pulled to side of road, called on star svc advisor performed onboard diagnostic test, results indicated failure in throttle system/traction control system. Advisor attempted field repair cycling ignition switch 3 times and I attempted to start engine. It would not start. Burning smell coming from vehicle, opened hood- air box smoking. Informed on star I am disconnecting battery. On star advisor call on my cell phone, and told me tow truck was coming. While awaiting tow truck smoke became more intense from air filter. Opened the air box and found mass air flow center burning. Removed air filter and discounted duct work to prevent fire from spreading. Vehicle was towed to local dealership. Service dept. Was closed and salesman open shop to allow car to be stored inside. Exchanged phone numbers. Received call 4/2/07 and was advised foreign object (possibly a cigarette) was ingested into filter which caused fire. At the suggestion of the service manager I contacted my insurance agent since I was told this was not a warranty issue. After inspection by my insurance CO. Who consulted with a fire investigation/adjuster, in his expert opinion, the fire began at the mass air flow sensor and worked it's way out. The investigator feels it is impossible for a cigarette to be thrown from a moving vehicle, remain lit, and works it's way up a 2. 5" opening inside a fender of a moving car. Photos and documentation are available incident a full report from the insurance company. After numerous calls to gm, they refused to cover any repairs or consider this may be a defect in their product. My insurance company refused to reimburse me as they feel this was a repair incurred by a defect in the vehicle.

5 Fuel Injection problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/22/2006

After not being used for approximately one month, I tried to start my 2000 Chevrolet Impala with 114,000 (+/-) miles. The car did not start. I connected jumper cables and again tried. The car did not turn over. I waited a few moments and then tried again. When I turned the key, there was an explosion and fire. I turned the key off and disconnected the cables. The top of the upper intake had exploded. The plastic engine cover had disconnected and the oil filler cap/tube had projected to the neighbor's yard. The top of the motor, fuel line and surrounding wires/insulation was on fire. The fire was put out by smothering. I called a mechanic directly after the incident and was informed of a recall for the fuel pressure regulator. After viewing the recall for for the 3. 8l (VIN k) fuel pressure regulator, the potential situation of a low battery combined with the leaking regulator causing a backfire and thus explosion was exactly what happened. I contacted local Chevrolet dealerships and was there was no recall for my vehicle. I then contacted Chevrolet customer service via a phone call on December 4, 2006. After multiple phone calls over the next few weeks, I was requested to have the car towed, at my expense, to a local dealership so Chevrolet could sent a representative to inspect. Chevrolet then called me the beginning of January to tell me that they feel the low battery caused the explosion and thus, they were not responsible. I asked for a copy of their inspection report and was told it was Chevrolet property and would not be released. I then searched the NHTSA website and found vehicle recall bulletin 03054-b which my VIN # is within the range given for 2000 Impala. I again called Chevrolet with this information and was told that even though my # was in the range, it might not have been involved, but in any event, they had inspected the vehicle and found they were not at fault. Therefore, Chevrolet's decision would not be changed.
