2 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

While loading items in the trunk I noticed a strong gas smell. My mechanic did a "smoke test" and could find no problem. It has continued to be a problem. Others have commented on the smell and a friend had the same model car with the same problem and finally traded it in. I have looked on line for recalls. The only thing I found was that on some cars there is a problem with the adhesive between the lining of the gas tank and the tank. It said you would need the gas tank serial number to check if it was one of the ones with the problem. I checked at the local Chevrolet dealership and was told it would be about $300. 00 just to pull the gas tank to check for the serial number. I am concerned that one day it might catch on fire. I just keep hoping it won't but I would like to find out more about this problem.

3 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/20/2012

The temperature gauge, fuel gauge, and speedometer have gone completely haywire! the temperature gauge goes to hot and buzzes but my car is no where near hot. I don't know if my tank is full or empty because the gauge is always on the bottom. I don't know how fast I'm going because my speedometer is stuck on 120. The dealership knows that this is a common problem but they insist on charging $500 or more to fix it. . . Just own up and do the recall!!.

4 Tank Assembly problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 11/07/2011

When I left my house to run to the store the gas gauage was reading half a tank. The store I ran to was 6 miles up the road, when I started the car and was coming home I noticed the gas gauge was below a quater of a tank. By the time I got back home (6 miles away) the gauage was reading between half and a quater tank. I also had a 2007 silverado that did the same thing, not sure but maybe Chevrolet needs to seed a recall out for the fuel gauge sending units. I have talked to other chevy owners that have had the same issue.

The failure only occurs when the fuel gauge indicates that there is 70-80 miles left in the tank. The contact must turn the engine off and restart the vehicle to allow the failure to correct itself. The dealer stated that the failure was the result of how the fuel system tank was designed. Due to its flat bottom, air enters the system and causes the vehicle to stall and shut off. The dealer stated that nothing could be done to remedy the failure. They further advised her to keep the fuel tank over a quarter full for the failure not to occur. The speed was unknown. The current mileage was 10,860 and failure mileage was 10,800.

9 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Impala

Failure Date: 01/07/2007

My complaint probably does not warrant a recall, but should be handled by consumer notification. My 2006 chevy Impala has developed a fuel related problem that causes the check engine light to activate. This is caused by the use of e-85 fuel. The computer detects high alcohol content in the fuel. The dealer was able to solve the problem with both a software update and by flushing out the e-85 from the fuel system and resetting the computer. The cause of this problem was lack of proper instruction, from the dealer, in the use of e-85. I have been instructed that after filling the gas tank with e-85, the vehicle must be driven a minimum of 11 miles, before shutting off the engine. This gives the sensor in the fuel system sufficient time to adjust to the fuel. This needs to be done every time the vehicle is switched from conventional e-10 gas, to e-85. I was unaware of this procedure, until after the problem had occurred. Gm should notify all consumers who have purchased 2006 and 2007 vehicles equipped with flex-fuel engines of this requirement. After the problem occurs, the dealer needs to perform the reset procedure for the fuel computer. This procedure requires approximately three hours. It is not a serious defect, but it is unnecessary. The dealers should inform customers, when the vehicles are delivered, of this procedure.

Then the smell was noticed in the garage. The vehicle was then taken to the dealership , and they could not find cause of the problem, but they thought it was the charcoal fuel purge canister in the fuel tank. The dealership stated that because it could not be duplicated they could not fix it. The consumer then called the manufacturer, and they stated they had no knowledge of this problem. The dealership told the consumer not to park the vehicle in the garage because of the hot water heater. Also, stated that if it occurred again, she should drive the vehicle straight to the dealer so they could diagnose the problem. The consumer was going to have the problem corrected at a local mechanic, at her own expense. This occurred on July 18, 2005 on a 2003 Chevrolet Impala.
