1 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 03/25/2016

2003 Chevrolet silverado pickup truck. Complete 100% brake failure, no brakes whatsoever. Due to brake line corrosion. Crash occurred. Luckily, no one was injured. Truck had recently been in for routine maintenance and inspection 3 months prior. Dealer service dept. Did not report presence of corroded brake lines however other things were reported and I authorized fixing. Since this is known incident I think that this should be a notification to owners. I am lucky no one was hurt and I can't imagine if I was on a freeway or other area where worse things would have occurred. After the collision damage I am having all brake lines replaced at my cost. Vehicle was traveling on a city street, traveling about 35mph, I stepped on the brakes for a routine stop and the brake pedal went to the floor. No brake pressure at all. I could not change lanes due to other traffic. Not enough time to react to get to emergency brake. I rear ended the car in front of me.

2 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 08/02/2015

Came out of a store at a shopping mall and noticed a massive amount of brake fluid on the ground. A brake line between the fuel tank and truck bed has ruptured causing an almost complete loss of fluid.

3 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2000 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 10/12/2014

I went to move my truck from my driveway to the street. As I was leaving the driveway I had to push as hard as I could to get the truck to stop. I was able to stop the truck only when the brake pedal was as far as I could push it down. I drove it around the block to see if the brakes would work better. I still had to push down all the way and it look a long time to stop. I was not conformable driving much over 10 mph. When I got back to the driveway I noticed a line of fluid. I looked at the rear drive side wheel well and there was brake fluid all over it. It appears the brake line to rusted through.

4 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 10/03/2014

Driving along and came to red light, applied brake pedal and it went to floor, I applied emergency brake pedal to stop truck, no warning of a brake system problem, my ase certified technician informed me that a metal brake line failure due to corrosion caused the line to rupture, he also stated that this has been an ongoing problem and also that gm and the NHTSA is aware of this problem but have not issued a recall or any type of notice to the consumer warning them of a potentially fatal brake system failure that can happen at any time.

5 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

Crested a small hill to see a red light with three cars in line. I depressed brake pedal, which went to the floor. The vehicle was stopped using the parking brake after swerving into empty lane of oncoming traffic in order to avoid hitting the line of cars from behind. Upon inspection, the front brake circuit was blown in the piping just aft of the front driver's side wheel. It is extremely difficult to stop a large truck with empty bed using only the rear brakes as they lock up easily. There seemed to be no brake power using the brake pedal, which is why the parking pedal was used. Even with a functional parking brake, the "failsafe" of having only one circuit is nearly useless given an empty truck bed (low rear-wheel traction) and a loss of pressure on the front circuit. In my opinion, losing the front brakes on a truck is catastrophic. In any event, in my case, the supposed fail-safe either did not work or was inconsequential. All of the hard lines (fuel and brake) on this vehicle are extremely corroded and are being replaced with stainless. This car spent the first five years of its life in oklahoma and missouri (where little to no salt is used) and moved to nh in 2006. The rear driver's side rocker panel is also rusted through and the frame has very significant rust, especially on the leaf spring hangers. In addition, the front driveshaft is rusted to the point that I will not operate the vehicle in 4wd until I replace it. This vehicle seems very susceptible to rust, especially the brake lines, some of which crumbled in my husbands hands while removing.

6 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 07/12/2014

Girlfriend was driving vehicle with a 700 lb load in the back on rt. 44. She was slowing down to make a left turn when the brake pedal went to the floor. She pumped the brake several times and was able to turn off rt. 44 onto a side street. While proceeding down street there were limited brakes. When she came upon our street she used the emergency brake to slow down to make a right turn. She again applied this method to to take a right turn into our driveway. Once in the driveway she told me there are no brakes in the truck. I got in the truck and applied the brakes and heard a spraying sound coming from the left front. I got out and saw brake fluid around the wheel well and dripping on the ground from the brake line.

7 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2000 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 10/02/2013

Driving in a normal situation, braking to get over into turn lane and the brakes went right to the floor. Found brake lines under left front of cab rusted through causing complete braking system to lose pressure. Fortunately I was not in a critical situation because I lost all braking power, very scary.

8 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2000 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 06/04/2013

During the annual safety inspection the dealer advised me that all of the brake lines would need to be replaced before the next inspection due to rust ($1200), and the rear brake backing plates would also need to be replaced due to rust. The rear brake backing plates were already replaced once due to rust-through. This vehicle has been routinely maintained and commercially washed throughout its life, driven on a daily basis up (until the last 5 months) only in eastern PA, DE, MD area (no snow belt travel). In my 40 years of vehicle ownership, I have never experienced or even heard of brake backing plates rusting through during the life of a 12 year old vehicle (let alone twice) and, have never experienced (or heard of) all brake lines on a vehicle rusting through to the point where they all need to be replaced. This is not normal wear or deterioration. It is most definitely a vehicle safety issue to have critical safety (brake) components rusting through at a highly accelerated rate for no apparent reason to the driver/owner.

9 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 12/17/2012

I just spent over 2k replacing all of my brake lines with stainless steel the way the factory should have done it originally on my 1999 chevy silverado. My mechanic almost hit the bay door when the brake pedal went to the floor as the rusted brake line blew out. The local gm dealer that replaced the lines had another chevy in with the same problem and said they are getting 1 to 2 per week with the same, exact problem! I was lucky I wasn't driving on the interstate when the line blew out. Someone is going to be killed and gm needs to do a recall.

10 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2001 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 12/14/2012

I have tried to stay with a gm product but the truck I recently purchased had the following problems, while trying also to avoid the most common problem of the gm bad frame,by the way Toyota warranties there frames. The 1st month of ownership the rear spring shackles broke there are 30 year old trucks that still don't have this problem,I own one. Next about another 30 days go by the electric fuel pump decided to die. That so far brings repairs up to close to 650. 00 after 60 days. Last wk. My brake line failed @ about 50 mph,no warning light right to the floor. This truck had been taken care of . Should I continue about the hole in my windshield frame every time it rains my ash tray is filled with water. By the way I was quoted about 1400. 00 for all the brake line repairs. Wtf gm who has that kind of money for repairs,I dont. The public should be compensated for substandard material use.

11 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2005 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

The brake lines ,fuel lines and the frame crossmembers are all severely rusted. It just is a matter of time before I loose my brakes, go up in flames or drop my gas tank onto the highway. The body on this truck is not too bad. It has 92,000 miles on it, and it is cleaned quite often. The undercarriage is rusted very badly. I expected more from something that costs so much. Cant afford a new one and if I could it wouldn't be a gm. Have always owned gm in the past.

12 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 08/11/2012

I started drivin when my brake warning came on. I went to apply the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I took my truck to a mechanic shop and he advised me the brake line rusted through and he couldn't order a replacement because there was other problems like mine.

13 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 02/07/2012

Rear main brake line failure due to extreme rusting condition. This line is located along the driver side upper chassis rail. Further inspection of all brake lines resulted in a very rusted condition.

14 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 02/18/2011

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet silverado K1500. While driving approximately 10 mph, the brakes were applied and the brake pedal depressed to the floorboard. The vehicle rolled to a stop and was towed to a local repair shop. The contact was informed the brake lines were severely corroded and fractured. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileages were 148,000. Updated 03/23/11.

15 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 09/12/2010

Brake line failure in the front wheel circuit. Metal brake line burst and brake pedal went to the floor. Luckily it was a secondary road and I was able to use the e-brake to stop. I ended up replacing all the brake lines because the rear lines were heavily rusted and crumbling apart as well.

17 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 05/20/2009

1999 Chevrolet truck, frame is rusting at an alarming rate. All of the brake lines have been replaced after two different failures. At age 70 and having worked on cars for years as a hobbie, I have never see a vehicle rust so bad. The brake lines were gone. I could have wrecked because of the failure.

18 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1999 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 12/12/2006

Last fall I reported to NHTSA that a solid brake line tubing failed on my 1999 silverado which I lost braking power which almost caused me to go over the side of the mountain just before kingwoo wv. I had this repair done a the chevy dealer in nearby oakland MD named team one. No response was received from NHTSA. Wednesday this past week I was heading for clarksburg vamc when the second ridged brake line cracked as the first. Again I almost lost the vehicle as I was gong down hill just outside kingwood and almost lost the truck over the mountain. Again I got it this time to joe romeos chevy dealer where I purchased the truck. Same findings as the first and they reiterated that this was normal wear and tear and my extended warranty would not cover it, but I stated how can lines that should have been stainless steel or rust resistant that fail be excluded from the warranty? I asked this of gm last week and all I got was a beat around the bush answer and they would not pay. This leaves me with over $400 in repair bills I have to pay. My truck has been at the latest dealer for almost a week now with hopes of getting it back today. This what I call inferior parts but my electric wheel chair that is in back of the vehicle I do have use of. Chailes r levy,of crl and assoc motorcycle safety consultant. Also I mentioned the dealer has knowledge of others that they broke in same manor as mine.

19 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 1997 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 09/26/2003

1997 Chevrolet silverado K1500. Rear brake line near wheel well ruptured causing loss of braking power. Cause of line rupture was due to excessive rust/corrosion of the line itself. I have digital pictures of the the defective line. Contact me via email and I will be happy to send. (someone at gm really should review these!) the entire line from front to rear exhibits signs of excessive/premature corrosion. The truck itself shows no other signs of rust damage. The dealer repaired only the portion of the line that failed. When questioned about the remaining corrosion, the service manager shrugged it off and acvised me it wasn't a problem. Total cost of repair including tow in was $349. 93. I have filed a complait with gm customer service. . . So far I have gotten no where. I feel this is a valid safety concern and other owners of this model truck should be notified of this potential problem.
