15 problems related to brake abs warning light have been reported for the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The abs warning light has been going on occasionally since I bought the car new in 1998. Recently, this has been happening frequently, almost every time, shortly after starting the car and usually during the first turn. Turning off the engine and then restarting turns the abs light off, and it then stays off. Also, in the past month or so, the car has slid forward just as it is coming to a stop. This causes me to slide about one foot beyond where I intended to stop, which could be dangerous. I have taken to stopping well behind the car in front of me to allow for this extra slide. At the time of the slide, I feel the pressure on the brake pedal suddenly drop, and then I have to push really hard to stop. This failure only seems to happen in the first few times I stop after starting the car. I brought the car today to wilkie Chevrolet in philadelphia to have this defect checked out.
While applying the brakes abs braking light appeared on the dashboard without warning. The brakes has been replaced five times, every 35,000 miles. While applying the brakes vehicle would vibrate, and there would be extended stopping distance.
Front brake rotor failed twice. Have had to replace them twice. Anti lock brake light also comes on periodically.
Anti lock brakes not working or releasing causing to replace brake pads and rotors 4 times on the drivers side abs light coming on and going off. First time about a month after purchase of car.
The abs system attempts to modulate after approx 5 miles of driving. This modulation lasts for an extended period of about 15-20 seconds and happens only while braking. This creates a period of poor braking and extended breaking distance, resulting in several near misses. After the extended modulation, the abs indicator light comes on and the abs system is disabled. Once the vehicle ignition is turned off the system clears and the light goes out. This has happend 10-15 times with increased frequency. Sed.
Was traveling on highway and went to apply brakes, abs braking system light came on, and brakes didn't grab. Dealer will be notfied tomorrow.
Vehicle is slipping or giving when brakes are applied. When starting up abs light flashes on and off. Brake pedal goes further to the floor than normal. Also, pads were replaced 6 months ago. Problem has been intermittent for 1year.
Whenever stopping vehicle, can feel the brake pedal pulsating. Needed to push harder on pedal to get vehicle to stop. The abs light would flash on/off. Took vehicle to dealer & mechanic changed the brake pads. The rotors were rotated at least twice & then scrapped.
Intermittently when brakes are applied abs light illuminates, and vehicle experiences extended stopping distance. Also, dealer has replaced pads and rotors several times, and the problem still exists.
Abs brake light illuminates on left turn. Have to stop, turn off engine and restart to turn off the abs light. Service review indicated that faulty light, would cost 600$ to repair.
When applying brakes they were making noise. Dealer replaced pads twice and calipers once. Brakes making noise again at this time. Braking distance is normal. Abs light illuminated.
While driving vehicle about 20 mph the consumer had trouble braking, and the abs light stayed on until he took vehicle to dealer for check up. Finally, dealer had to replace front right hub. Dealer contacted.
Since the lease of this vehicle I have encountered numerous front-end related problems. The car hard 6,441 miles when I leased it. Currently I am in themiddle of trying to fix by braking system. I brought my car to a personal mechanic because the abs light was coming on and the brakes were not releasing. He removed the code and verified that my brakes were indeed not releasing. He instructed me to go back to the dealership because it could have beenm related to the replacement of my brakes pads. I made an appointment went to the dealership and was told they took it for a test run (10miles) and detected nothing. They contacted my mechanic and he reported what he had found and what was on the abs code. Dealership informed that brakes handled as expected and that no codes appeared therefore they could do nothing. The brakes still grab and the car shimmies and feels as though its dragging when stepping on the gas. I was told when the abs light comes on again to call and make another appointment.
Intermittently abs indicator light continued to illuminate while vehicle was in motion. Dealer has not been able to correct or duplicate problem.
I have gotten my pads,rotors/calipers fixed and cleaned twice at over 700 dollars and my abs light is constantly on and I have only had the car six months I have taken it to 2 mechanics and now I can hardly stop the car. Please get back with me ASAP I don't know what to do. Thank you.
