20 problems related to brake disc pads have been reported for the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
A loud popping noise came from the front and rear. Consumer drove to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the left and right brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced due to warping.
For some reason the front disc brake pads wear prematurely. (they last about a month or so of in-frequent driving). At about every third pad change,I've had to replace both front rotors. Ak.
Consumer states that she has had to replace front rotors/ pads, and rear cylinders. While driving 35 mph on highway vehicle started to shimmy and pull to the right. After taking vehicle to dealer, all the above repairs were made.

I have reported to the dealer of my r/f caliper problem. The brake pads on the r/f side are all the way to the warning tab of the brakes. I feel the pads should be replace because the caliper wore them down prematurlly.

I have replaced, brake pads, rotors, 6 times since the purchase of this car. Have also replaced abs brakes 1 time. When traveling on the highway and you hit the brakes, it will shudder and shake (even after the brakes have been changed) someone is going to get killed in this car unless gm does something about this. I have informed gm of this problem, they said they would keep a record. No action has been taken on this! please help! as I can not sell or trade the car in. I am afraid to drive it!.
Premature failure of front disc brakes and rotors causing front of car to vibrate when the brakes applied. Nlm.
Defective / faulty brake system: dealer has replaced four sets of brake pads;. Turned three rotors ,and replaced one rotor. Also, and sanded & deglazed rear brakes. Can NHTSA do something about this condition.
Braking system malfunctioned. Also, brakes shimmied and shook, causing extended stopping distance which may result in a crash. Dealer replaced pads 3 times/turned rotors 2 twice, and replaced rotors once. Dealer could not determine the cause.
Whenever the brakes are applied, vehicle would shake. Took to dealer & was informed the brake pads & rotors were worn out. The rotors were also pitted. Dealer informed owner would have to pay first before repairs to brake damage is done. Work completed at location vehicle was purchased under "one time warranty repair". I am experiencing repeated problems with the brakes on this vehicle. I have had 05 brake repair jobs on this car within the last year and a half of which is not normal. There must be a manufacturing defect with my breaking system. Coleman autoplex tells me that this car is not designed to be driven highway for an hour and fifteen minutes one way twice a day because the brakes will get hot and cause the rotors to warp. I do not believe this is true because GMC/ Chevrolet would not produce such poor quality/ workmanship for its customers. I have a 1988 delta88 oldsmobille which I have put 250,000 miles on and I have never had such a problem with the brakes. Rotors required turning at 18,860 miles. Brake pads had at least 50% life remaining. At 26,733 miles, rotors require turning again. New repair shop (alexander Chevrolet, murfreesboro, TN 37133 615-893-6600) indicates at least 50%-60% life remaining on brakes pads. There is an apparent defect in the quality of rotors being supplied on vehicle. Chevrolet customer service (1-800-222-1020) will not resolve dispute by waiving charge to turn rotors for a second time. It has been less than 8,000 miles since the initial repair was made. Rotor failing prematurely and too often.

Front disc brakes are faulty, the rotors have been turned, replaced and turned again. Consumer has complained that the left front wheel was hotter than the right and also had a greater amount of brake dust accumulation, dealer continues to tell consumer that there is nothing wrong with the brakes. Nlm.

Intermittently when brakes are applied vehicle experiences extended stopping distance. Also, premature failure of brake pads have affected the rotors. Dealer has inspected vehicle.
