Eight problems related to brake disc caliper have been reported for the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Wheel bearings keep failing, resulting in me having to get new or resurfaced rotors, pads, calipers, bearings obviously, etc. This is the fourth time in a year and a half! I can't afford to drive an unsafe vehicle, but I can't afford to keep shelling out $500-600 every six months for the same problem, either. After doing some research on the internet, and talking to a few mechanics, I'm apparently not the only one with this problem. Also, my power steering hose has a habit of blowing off the line for no reason, resulting in me having to re-attach it. But I don't care about that, I want to know what's wrong with my brake system.
Brake pulsation continues after several sets of rotors and pads. Also have replaced calipers, master cylinder and hoses. Rear brakes not functional.
Brake caliper module malfunctioned and locked up. Consumer's had to have to caliper replaced twice. Contacted dealer, and dealer stated GMC put 12000 miles and 12 month warranty on parts, and consumer was outside of warranty.
Brake pads, rotors, and calipers continually failed on Chevrolet Malibu. This has been going on since car was new. Pads, rotors, calipers, and ball joints have all been replaced - pads and rotors as often as every 6000 to 12000 miles. Dealers and independents have worked on it with the same result: more failures. There are hundreds of complaints about these problems for Malibu's just from this year's model and many more for other years. Nhtsa has never investigated even though brake failure would seem to be significant. My tax money is not working hard enough.
Brake caliper broke causing loss of control and accident. (ohio traffic crash report).
The brakes performed erratically even after the brake system was replaced. The owner was informed that the vehicle needed new brake calipers.
I bought my Chevrolet Malibu used and have had it about 2 months. Days after the 36,000 mile warranty runs out I have major brake problems. Replaced front brakes, pads, right rotor and right caliper. Every mechanic I've seen is amazed that a car a year old needs a new caliper. Called the dealer and they told me they couldn't do anything about it. Also had problem with front end rattling noise like the front end is loose or something; dealer did put new control arms on, but noise still persists.
Brakes are wearing out prematurley . Pads/calipers and the rotors needed to be replaced at 35,000 miles. There was no indictation of a problem, causing a safety hazard. 2. The vehicle shakes at speeds less than 20 mph ,and dealer replaced control arm, but defect is still occurring.
