Failure Date: 12/02/2020

Steering shaft column torque sensor assembly part on 2008 4 cylinder Malibu replaced by Chevrolet dealer in oct, 2014 as part of Chevrolet recall # n140115 at about 75,000 miles of use -it was still functioning properly when replaced. The replacement part was redesigned but required replacement after only another 49,000 miles by the same redesigned part. Perhaps the recall remedy would have been more effective had the power steering motor controller unit also been replaced at about 75000 miles as recall # n140115 specified it could have been.

3 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2019

When I start my car, the steering wheel is locked up and a message stating "power steering" comes across the main screen. My vehicle was stationary. The issue only continues to get worse over time, and the current recall for this doesn't seem to cover my VIN number or yield an open recall. It is possible the person who had this car before me had the issue fixed and it is now happening again. Only after restarting the vehicle multiple times am I able to turn the wheel all the while it shakes back and forth as if there's an issue with the steering column.

5 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

I have had nothing but problems with my electronic power steering amongst other things as well. The steering wheel locked up on me for the first time while parked. I turned the car off then back on & it went back to normal. I've been having issues with it making a sound in the steering wheel column & the steering wheel will move on it's own & will stick while I'm driving which makes it hard to control my vehicle. Also there is other electrical problems causing security light to come on & my car will lock up & I can't start it. The "service esc" light came on around the same time as well. The seatbelt light will come on when everyone has their seatbelt on too. There is obviously something going on with wire connections or something. I'm aware of recalls on the same exact year make & model as my vehicle for the same issues I'm having but no recalls have been issued for my specific vehicle. I have owned nothing but gm vehicles & this one has been nothing but problems!.

9 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/14/2014

My daughter was driving the Malibu and the steering cut out on her. She managed to get the car to the side of the road. She turned the car off and restarted it and the steering came back. About two months later my son-in law was driving the car and the steering cut out again. I asked both of them if there were any lights or chimes involved when the steering cut out. Both of them said no. The past couple weeks my son-in -law told me that it cut out again. I told him to take it to a dealer to find out what the problem is. The dealer told him that it might be the steering column, power steering motor or control unit, and it would cost around 700 - 1,000 -dollars. My son-in -law asked if there was a recall and the dealer said there is one but its hasn't been sent out yet. Then they had the audacity to charge him 55 dollars for the time spent on troubleshooting there own problem.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2014

When I get into my car and start it the warning signal for power steering comes on the screen and there is no power steering. I shut off the car wait a few minutes and restart then its fine. The dealer say's its a torque sensor on the steering column and that this car has electric motor driven power steering. The dealer also said even though there is a recall for this in other models mine is not included. I have read 5 out of 15 complaints about this steering problem on your web page. How do we pressure gm to take responsibility.

13 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2013

My vehicle started making a loud popping noise in the front when making a turn. The loud popping noise has now been happening just driving down the road and even worse at lower speeds of 20-35 mph. Along with a squeaky bouncing noise that is constant. I took it to my local dealership and I was told it had something to do with the steering column loosing it's lubrication and nothing can be done put replace the whole thing. The problem is so annoying and I feel like everyone can hear it. I am about to just trade it in on a Honda or Toyota even though I have only ever owned a Chevrolet.

14 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2013

Starting in June of 2013, our 2008 chevy Malibu starting having steering issues. Regardless of what speed you traveled, whether it be 20 or 55mph, the steering wheel starting jerking left to right on its own. It would stop, and then sporadically start back up again. We visited our local auto shop and they told us it was the ball joints. After spending $400, we found that the problem did not go away. After doing some research online, we found an entire community of 2008 chevy Malibu owners who had experienced this same thing. . Read more...

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2013

Like some of the other Malibu owners, my 2008 started shimmying while idling, and also sticking while driving. I took the car to a local shop and they had to replace the steering shaft, steering column assembly, and the ps module. They called gm to see if there was a recall issued, and there is none. My car has 37,000 miles on it; I should not have to be dealing with a steering issue at this point, especially to the tune of $1600. 00! by all rights, gm should do the right thing and issue a recall on the steering system.

18 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2012

My 2008 chevy Malibu LS; has alot of knocking in the sterring column that make crunching noises when you turn and hit bumps in the street. The car squeaks on streets with no bumps and getting worse everyday. This happens at all speeds; you can hear the car coming down the street. I had to order the parts then pay to have them put on.

19 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2012

While test driving the vehicle on April 28, 2012, I was sitting still on an incline and the wheel began to turn back and forth on its on. The car lot assured me it was motor mounts, an easy fix, and I bought the car. Within a month or two, the steering became increasingly worse. Today, November 5, 2013, I was driving the vehicle and without warning, the power steering went out on the freeway and I am a petite woman(weighing in at around 110 lbs. ) so it was very hard for me to regain control of the vehicle. The ending cost for my vehicle is around 15,000 and it has only been a year and a half since the time I purchased it. I can't afford to replace the entire steering column.

20 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2012

We was getting ready to park and the steering column got really stiff and I couldn't move the car to park. I had to shut the car off and restart the car and it loosing up. I was in the city of south bay, florida. ## VIN failed ##.

21 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

Steering wheel shook violently when the car was at rest and then began to shake while driving down the highway at approximately 49k miles. Took it to dealer and had the steering column replaced. Then the power door locks began to fail; both passenger door locks and the driver's lock must be operated manually now (well, the driver's door lock works 1/2 of the time. . . Never know if it is actually engaged unless you do it manually). No outside keyhole exists for the passenger door side to be unlocked, which is very inconvenient and potentially unsafe, especially when you are driving alone and cannot get the doors locked by pushing the button. Have driven gm vehicles my entire life, but this is the last time the company will ever get my money. Sad. . . .

22 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2011

2008 chevy Malibu with 60,000 miles - I encountered problems with steering- the car was pulling, the steering wheel was moving when the car was stopped. Took it to the dealership was told it needed an alignment. Had the alignment, the problem got worse. Took it to another mechanic was told it was the steering column. When they called the dealer to order the parts, the dealer advised them that they see this problem 3-4 times a week on the Malibu, but never told me about it. The steering column was replaced at a cost of $1300, yet the problem is still not resolved. We were also told that this particular part is also the same part used on the pontiac g6 which has been recalled, yet there is no recall on the chevy Malibu.

23 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. While traveling 70 mph, the contact noticed that the steering wheel began to suddenly vibrate. 24 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2010

My son's 2008 chevy Malibu is having problems with the steering column suddenly shaking and jerking back and forth while driving and occasionally while in park. The brake lights will also come on without him pressing on the brake and disengage the cruise control, if it is on. We have had a switch replaced that was faulty, but it did not fix either problem. Now we have been told that the steering unit needs to be replaced.

25 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/06/2010

I own a 2008 chevy Malibu with electronic power steering. While driving or at a stop, the steering wheel will either shake or suddenly pull to the left or right. I had it in the dealership for repairs and they replaced a steering column that needed to be replaced but that did not fix the steering. The dealership believes that it is the electronic power steering itself even though nothing is saying that it is defective. With the problems with electronic power steering in chevy cobalts for 2004 to 2009, I'm concern that the issues with electronic power steering may not be just in one model car but the component itself.

26 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/28/2010

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while traveling at approximate speeds of 35 mph, the steering wheel exhibited continuous movement without warrant. The contact had to forcibly hold the steering wheel to keep the vehicle from veering off the road. She was able to drive the vehicle to her residence without incident. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where she was advised not to drive the vehicle until repaired. The failure was contributed to a defective steering column. The vehicle was left at the dealer where the contact was awaiting repairs. The VIN was not available. The failure and current mileages were approximately 25,000.

27 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2010

Just go over my 36,000 mile warranty, and the power steering problem indicator came up on my dash. The steering wheel starts moving frantically on it's own, whenever it wants to, even if you are driving the car. This could be a big hazard. I call the dealer, and of course it's not included in the power train warranty, even though the power steering is electric in my 2008 4 cylinder Malibu. The dealer also stated no recalls on my Malibu, but this should definitely be a recall, since I see chevy cobalt is being recalled for the same thing. Please help. I have to take the car in for service, the dealer states it is the power steering electric box or in the power steering column.

28 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

2008 chevy Malibu, makes thumping sound turning at lower speeds, wheel feels mushy and shakes. Told by dealer its the intermediate steering column. Concerned about potential danger. Car out of warranty, they want over $200 to fix it. Should be a safety recall, as I have talked to other gm owners who have the same problem.
