36 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 06/01/2003

I have had serious brake wearing issue, in one years time a total of 40,000 mi I used 3 sets of brakes pads for this car. I had have brake calipers changes, in front (loaded) and rear wheel cylinders, (2), and new drums for rear brakes. Brake continued to be a problem and have had completely bleed the system at Chevrolet dealer. Now I have turn signal problems. They work when they want to. Due to my busy work schedule I have been unable to have repair done. Chevrolet repair hours are limited. My commute is long over 60 miles one way. It is often very difficult due to turn signal failure at critical moments.

37 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/25/2003

Problems with 2001 Chevrolet Malibu's brake equipment. The brakes were not covered under warranty but were replaced twice by the dealership, once at 13500k miles along with resurfacing of the rotors and the replacing the r/f caliper, and again at 7855k miles later. The last incident occurred when the consumer exited the expressway when a loud metal to metal sound was heard. The brakes were down to the floor and in order to stop, the consumer had to continually pump the brake pedal.

38 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/03/2003

The brake caliper was designed, the caliper piston over heated, which caused the piston to expand.

39 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/15/2003

The front brake calipers on this vehicle flex when the brakes are applied. This has resulted in uneven and premature wear of the brake pads. The pads were replaced twice, once at 17,000 miles and once at 30,000. The rotors were remachined at 17,000 miles, replaced at 30,000 miles and resurfaced at 33,000. The flexing of the caliper causes misalignmet of the guide pins, causing the caliper to hang up. As a result only the inner brake pad is stopping the car. There is virtually no wear on the outer pad. The inner pads show signs of overheating, which can cause the rotors to warp (pulsating), and brake fade in a panic stop. The constant flexing could also comprimise the intgerity of the aluminum calipers over time. Gm claims this is normal. I have checked the nhtsb web site and found 28% of the complaints filed for this vehicle were brake related and almost all could be attributed to this condition.

43 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 09/12/2002

I have numerous complaints regarding the brake system of my vehicle. I have had my car for just over a year now and I have had 3 wheelbearings done, the brakes changed twice, the rotors changed and turned, the calipers changed and more. The calipers continue to make a horrible crunching noise and no one wants to take responsibility for it. The dealer says its a manuafacturing defect and chevy says it was under warranty when I bought it, 12 days, and it was never brought into a chevy dealership so there's nothing they can do. Well, its crap and I know there are at least a hundred other people with the same problem so if you have a 1999 chevy Malibu with defects call me and lets sue in a class action suit because they should not get away with this. 607-397-1782.

Failure Date: 06/23/2002

While driving at 55 mph I had to stop for a car, the brakes failed,( brake clear to the floor) I had to drive into the bar pit to avoid a collision. I have had the vehicle to a gm authoriized service department 3 times to have them fixed because of how slow it stops. Brake pads were replaced, calipers replaced, everything was done to the brakes that they could. The brakes failed after the brakes on the wheel were in working order. I think the abs system is going out. !.

47 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/09/1999

Brake pads, rotors, and calipers continually failed on Chevrolet Malibu. This has been going on since car was new. Pads, rotors, calipers, and ball joints have all been replaced - pads and rotors as often as every 6000 to 12000 miles. Dealers and independents have worked on it with the same result: more failures. There are hundreds of complaints about these problems for Malibu's just from this year's model and many more for other years. Nhtsa has never investigated even though brake failure would seem to be significant. My tax money is not working hard enough.

51 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu

I have had problems with this vehicle since the day I financed it. I understand buying a used car is risky but not like this. I have had my complete brake system replaced and still have major problems. I purchased the vechicle from folsom lake used car outlet and all they can do is point the blame towards me. They tell me it is the way that I drive, I ride the brakes, I drive with two feet. Excuses mainly. Instead of saying we don't honestly know what is wrong fingers are being pointed. I have gone through 6 sets of pads, 4 sets of rotors due to hot spots, a set of calipers, and now everything needs replaced again. I have not had the car 1 year yet. Pretty much my brakes fail every month to month & 1/2. When the dealership first put my vehicle in the shop it went to the original dealer 2 weeks after having it, for blown headgaskets & cooliant problems. The brake problem was there but where I purchased the vehicle from wanted to fix the problem themselves. I have a 4 year old son, and I look at it as what if the brakes totally fail. I guess it is no ones problem until someone gets hurt and a major law suit is brung against the dealer. That makes people then open their eyes and think how the situation could have been prevented. I do not bring all the blame against chevy because when a dealership sells a vehicle new or used safety is the most important thing. And I don't have that safety in my vehicle. Please someone can you help me in my situation.

54 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Malibu

I almost hit a large number of cars due to this problem. Once I tired to up up the the mouintains and when I returned, brakes would make the card shake and vibrate and I could not control the weel and could not brake the car. I praid and reduced speed via gear, and then I could stop the car, but my car was so out of control that I almost went out of the road. I have changed my rotors and pads like 10 times and calipers once within 20. 000 miles. I have checked the internet and there are over 5000 compaints about the same problem I am having with my brakes, wearing out very soon. I have spent over 3500 dolars on pads and brakes, with and without original parts and nothing seens to work. Even the dealer mechanic says that the brakes is fine, but for me and everyone else, they are not.

55 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu

1. Brake line has rubbed raw, causing loss of brakes; 2. Months prior consumer took vehicle to a brake safety inspection, but no defect was shown. Also, brake calipers leaked brake fluid, causing loss of brakes.

56 Brake Disc Caliper problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu

I bought my Chevrolet Malibu used and have had it about 2 months. Days after the 36,000 mile warranty runs out I have major brake problems. Replaced front brakes, pads, right rotor and right caliper. Every mechanic I've seen is amazed that a car a year old needs a new caliper. Called the dealer and they told me they couldn't do anything about it. Also had problem with front end rattling noise like the front end is loose or something; dealer did put new control arms on, but noise still persists.
