Power steering failure has happened twice in the last two weeks. Get message on dash of electric power steering loss and that moment it's hard to turn the steering wheel. Power steering fails while driving, had to shut my car off while I tried to make a turn on the higway. The 1st time it happened at home on may 2020, car locked up and wouldn't move at all. Dashboard will say traction off, esc off and it won't let me move my steering wheel. I have to shut off the car and wait a few minutes for it to come back. Car is at roughly 133k miles and had no issues prior to this. Also, when I drive my front side of the car shakes as if it is going over stuff. I replaced both cv joints, gotten the car aligned, and balanced my tires and they still can't find the issue with it. Only recall that pops up is the electronic, but I believe it has the steering recall as well.

Power steering failure with eps service warning. Sudden loss of power steering and a warning that states service esc. When I turn off the vehicle and turn back on systems may return but eventually fail with sudden loss of power steering and esc. This occurs while driving or stationary intermittently at stop lights while driving and parked.
Power steering fails while driving. Dashboard will say "traction off, esc off" and I won't be able to move steering wheel. This has happened in busy intersections. I have to stop the vehicle and restart in order to gain power steering again. Mechanic has diagnosed it as torque sensor/steering column. This was recalled on many other Malibus, but not mine. A lot of people are having this same problem but weren't included in the recall. This has been happening since I purchased vehicle seven years ago at 80,000 miles (about once per year) and has gotten worse recently at 170,000 miles (multiple times per month). This is dangerous and very expensive.
After recall service for power steering failure it's doing the same thing. Power steering fails while driving . I have to shut the car off and restart to reset the issue.

Power steering has begun to fail. Mileage at 106,000. Generally happens at low speeds. All control is lost making it difficult/impossible to steer vehicle. Major safety issue. Issue is resolved with a restart, however sometimes it does come back almost immediately.
Intermittent issue with power steering failure. This has happened while driving. So far, if I shut the vehicle down and restart, the power steering works again. But while driving the vehicle I feel a slight tugging to the right on the steering wheel. The tugging also happens when stopped if I slightly turn the wheel.
The electronic power steering failed while driving. Service esc light came on and car was nearly impossible to steer. After turning off the engine and restarting the car, the power steering came back on. Now it is going in and out. Sometimes I can steer and sometimes it is almost impossible.

After turning off the engine and restarting the car, the power steering came back on. Now it is going in and out. Sometimes I can steer and sometimes it is almost impossible. I have looked it up and there is a recall for this problem but my car does not seem to be part of this recall.
Power steering failure at 80k miles. Many, many posts on Malibus with similar module failure, this should not happen and almost caused me to hit a pole. Can you assist in getting me service under recall, that although may not apply to 2010 is quite obviously the same issue they had under recall? thank you stanley smith.
Power steering fails under hard acceleration. When this occurs the check engine light come on and the steering has no electric assist. This continues until the acceleration is reduced. After reduced acceleration the check engine light goes off the the power steering returns to normal. This occurs intermittently, but typically on a freeway on ramp while getting up to speed and trying to merge with traffic.

The steering wheel twitches even when the vehicle is not moving. A power steering error message comes across the display randomly on certain instances of starting the vehicle. When the message displays, the power steering fails altogether. Turning the car off and starting it again re-establishes the power steering, however the twitching of the steering wheel continues. Malibus of similar years have been recalled for the same problem.
Power steering sensor kit failure, known issue on this gm model and there was a recall for this year model on this issue yet didn't cover this VIN number, it is my belief that the recall for this issue wasnt wide enough to include this VIN # part replacement p/n 23232310 $708. 73.

While operating my 2009 chevy Malibu 4cyl in a turn, the electric power steering without any warning failed. A warning indicator afterwards then flashed power steering and electronic stability control failure. The result was almost total loss of control of vehicle while driving in heavy city traffic going through a traffic circle with children in backseat of my vehicle. This is because without warning the electronic power steering failed which caused me to panic emotionally and also caused me great physical difficulty as I am a woman and I all of a sudden had to garner all this strength to manually steer the vehicle in heavy city traffic. Chevy is aware of this defect and will repair this if the vehicle is less than 10 years old and had less than 150,000 miles. We could have all died in a car crash. I think this should be recalled as this is a safety hazard that comes without any warning and renders the vehicle undrivable unless repaired as it is unsafe. The chevy mechanic indicates if both the sensor and motor need to be replaced it will cost $1200. 00. My husband is a veteran and we cannot afford this costly repair.
Power steering failure while driving--very dangerous. It is at the shop now for possible repair depending on costs. I've read that this is very costly and that the issue may be an already recall fix.
2009 chevy Malibu experienced intermittent power steering failures identical to the problem described in the gm #14116b product safety notice (document id 4006770), which affects some 2009 chevy Malibu. The issue often occurs when the vehicle it just started, then will go away once the car is restarted after it has warmed up. Gm says this safety recall in not applicable to our vehicle's VIN. I have no way to independently verify which torque sensor was installed in this vehicle, and wanted to report this issue.
Tl the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 75 mph, the power steering failed. Also, the esc device, power steering, and traction control indicators illuminated. The contact had to use extra strength to steer the vehicle. The contact's parent had to come pick up the contact. The vehicle was not towed. The contact called kelley Chevrolet (5220 value drive, fort wayne, in 46805, (260) 484-5566) and was advised to call gm's customer service line. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 171,000.
Electric power steering stopped working while I was on the highway going 75mph. Turned car off then back on and it didn't have an issue. Then cut out again while I was driving. Electric power steering has completely failed.
Power steering fails while driving. Wife almost crashed while driving. Very hard to turn under slow driving conditions.
Power steering failure. Power steering motor/module needs to be replace.
While driving on a city street the electric power steering failed. The vehicle could not be steered at low speeds preventing me from turning into my driveway. The dash lit up like a christmas tree and the power steering failure notice appeared. It is obvious that the prior recall was not large enough and did not cover the population of defective vehicles. Time for NHTSA and gm to expand the recall and eliminate this danger.
While driving 50mph on a state highway, power steering failed. Service esc and power steering alerts displayed 2/19/19. Dealer identified steering wheel torque sensor and steering wheel position sensor out of calibration. Technician re-calibrated sensors. Approximately 2 hours after picking up the vehicle 2/20/19 the power steering failed again. This is a serious safety issue that has the potential of serious bodily harm.
Tl the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. The contact stated that there was an electric power steering failure that caused the steering wheel to seize. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 14v153000 (steering), 14e044000 (steering), and 15v064000 (steering). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.
The power steering was lost as I was driving my vehicle in a city road. I was driving approximately 25 miles an hour on a straight road, not turning at the time. The service esc light came on. The car jerked to the side, which was terrifying with my two young kids in the car. This repair was covered under the gm bulletin 15356 and the dealership replaced the eps motor and torque sensor. However, since having the work done, the mechanic informed me that my steering column is now bent. As I have not been in any accident, this could only be from the impact of losing my power steering. I feel like this repair should be covered under this special bulletin as well. This power steering failure jeopardized the safety of my family and this should be made a full recall covering all the steering components to the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu. I would like to be reimbursed for what will be over $700 to fix the issue caused by this power steering failure.
