Intermittently my car esc service power steering light goes on and the power steering goes out. I have to pull over and turn the engine off and then the power steering comes on. I'm an older woman and am terrified to get on a freeway or busy street because I can barely steer the car when the power steering goes off. After reading numerous reports online, this seems to be a defect with the car and is very expensive to repair. Since I'm not in a position to spend the money right now, it feels as though I take my life in my hands every time I drive. There is no predicting when the steering goes out. Sometimes it's several times a week, sometimes it's month between. Very dangerous!!!!.

The power steering light comes on and my steering wheel gets stiff. This happened to me leaving home and while I was turning on the highway. It is not the first time this has happened, and I have read that there is a recall on this.
The power steering light just came on my car while driving down the road.
While driving 45 mph on a city street, my power steering went out, the evs service light, then traction light & back to no power steering light. Was able to make hard turns to get into a parking lot. Turned the car off & on - all lights went back to normal. Called the dealer who told me it was "my call" if I wanted to bring it in for service. Dangerous as far as I'm concerned & surprised there is no recall on this issue. I could have been killed or killed somebody else at that speed.

This isn't the first time I've encountered this exact issue, and have had previous issues after purchasing the vehicle (used) back in 2013. Both times this exact issue at hand occurred, both happened while driving. First time, I was driving in a sharp curve with my children in the back seat. This last time I was driving on the highway. Luckily nothing was hit in either cases, however this past time I pulled muscles in my back straining so hard to try and steer the vehicle to get at least very minimum off the road and onto a side street and to safety. As both times I were driving the esc light came on, and power steering light came on. Resulting in me not being able to brake, or steer - the only steering I were able to do was very strained (as previously stated), I had to put forth extreme efforts to get it to barely turn. The steering wheel acted as if it were locked. This needs to be addressed, and covered under a recall as I've read/heard a multitude of the same issues that are all common with this exact year, model/car. And for this be such a danger, it needs to be corrected before it costs someone their life. I'm terrified to think what if everyone around me weren't paying attention when both events took place, it could've resulted in my life. My spouse being single raising our precious 4 children. How chevy/gm can live knowing these issues happen and not address it is horrible, knowing very well it could result in a life I'd not more being lost. The only way I could get the lights to turn off and me to be able to drive, I had to shut the car off, wait, and turn it on in order to continue my drive to work. I'm terrified to drive this death trap of a car, especially knowing these issues could happen at any time, without warning or reason. This needs to be fixed. Otherwise this is a lawsuit just waiting to happen.
Bought this car new for my daughter to drive back and forth to college, I wanted a safe car for her, but this car is anything but safe. Started having issues with getting random steering assist warning lights, then tpms lights, then it shut down in the middle of an intersection and it had to be towed. The dealership has been unable to find anything wrong with the car and now its out of warranty and is costing us hundreds of dollars in service fees. Battery has been replaced and its still having issues. Lately she has been complaining that the car suddenly drifts at highway speeds and she has to make corrections that jerk her all over the road. It does this at random, not every drive, maybe every other, it feels like an electrical issue and not a mechanical issue. She has almost crashed twice, was pulled over this past weekend coming home for another dealership visit because an officer noticed the weaving and corrections and assumed she was drunk. Again, the dealership cannot find anything wrong. I have explained the issue, brought in a technical bulletin that explains the exact issue, still no resolution, they still say they cannot find anything and send me home with another bill. This car is not safe to drive, and once winter hits and the roads become slick, this issue will likely result in an accident. I have refused to let her drive it to college at this point and the car is sitting in my driveway. The dealership is useless even after showing them hundreds of internet complaints. Why is gm ignoring this issue?.

Same issue as everybody else. I lose steering while driving down the road. Something to do with the power steering. My steering wheel locks up and im anybody to turn the car. This happens while driving down the road parked or pretty much at anytime. When it does work my steering wheel jerks. While driving it jerks as well very scary stuff. When it happens the esc and power steering light comes on. This was special type of recall with a exp date? really so you only care about the people driving your car for 5 years? after that who cares if they die huh.
The power steering has been lost on multiple times and now it happening more and more frequently. It has been happening during this past year. It usually happens without warning. The power steering light will come on and simultaneously the power steering is lost. It takes a great deal of effort to steer the car and move over or turn a corner. It's a critical safety factor! for an senior women, it's very difficult to maneuver. Luckily, it's only happened on city streets while in motion. It has come on when the car has stopped, like at a traffic stop. Usually, I can turn the car off and turn it on again. A dealership informed me that it was the power steering sensors and my car is not covered. There have been recalls on this problem for other 2007 Malibu's. I also have safety concerns because I transport my elderly mother. Can't understand why my car is not covered. Drivers seat belt is not engaged - indicator light shows problem that it is not engaged. Concerned it won't work in an accident.

Per online reviews from recalls for 2011 Malibu the power steering warning light flashed. This recall was not sent to me, however, my car is affected.
I was driving my car a few days ago on a city street and after I made a turn, the power steering service esc light came on as well as the traction control picture. My steering wheel got super stiff and it was extremely hard to turn it. After I pulled over and turned my car off, I turned it back on and everything went back to normal. There is a recall for this but I checked on the gm recall website and put in my VIN but my car is not included in the recall which doesn't seem to make much sense if other 2012 Chevrolet Malibu's have been recalled because of this.
