5 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/02/2020

Steering shaft column torque sensor assembly part on 2008 4 cylinder Malibu replaced by Chevrolet dealer in oct, 2014 as part of Chevrolet recall # n140115 at about 75,000 miles of use -it was still functioning properly when replaced. The replacement part was redesigned but required replacement after only another 49,000 miles by the same redesigned part. Perhaps the recall remedy would have been more effective had the power steering motor controller unit also been replaced at about 75000 miles as recall # n140115 specified it could have been.

Steering wheel column makes clunking noise when turning. It has been repaired at least 3 times. The last 2 were 5/31/2013, which we paid for, & 10/1/2014, which was on a recall. Now it has been doing it again for several months.

11 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/21/2020

Was driving home from work on Friday and the power steering went out and I almost ended up in a field, could not turn it. Stopped and turned it off and back on again and it went back to normal, and it went out again as I was pulling into the drive. The next day I started car up and it had its warnings across my dash and the steering was out again. I just picked it up from the shop and it cost me $1562. 00 to get it repaired. The steering assist motor, a new steering column(electric) and r&r steering column w/sgl switch and new turn signal switch. It's all connected. I have yet to find a recall for my car on my VIN number but yet there were a few recalls on many cars including my 2009 Malibu for this exact issue but yet I never received anything in the mail about it. I hope that they intend on doing something about this, I could have been killed while trying to take a curve and had to struggle just to keep it on the road in the other persons lane until I could get pulled off the road and out of the way. From reading all that I have read on here it seems that I am not the only one with the issue.

12 Steering Column problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/06/2020

The electric power steering suddenly stopped working, and I was in danger of crashing the vehicle. The chevy dealership says its a problem with the steering column torque sensor, and that gm had a million car recall on this issue. However, they stated this safety concern had an expiration date and for my vehicle, it expired may 2019. It appears to be having exactly the same symptoms, with the same dangerous consequences, as those recalled vehicles, and yet gm will not take responsibility for this safety matter. This condition occurred intermittently, and then all of the time. It occurs when in reverse, and forward gears, when turning and when traveling straight. It occurs at all speeds. Again, the gm mechanics state the problem is the steering column torque sensor.

13 Steering Column problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/29/2020

Tl-the contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, the steering wheel locked up and vibrated, without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that there was a special coverage for the failure and told the contact to call the dealer. The vehicle was taken to the. Kenny ross Chevrolet Buick GMC dealer, located at 11250 rte 30, irwin, PA 15642, where a diagnostic test was performed. The technician diagnosed that the steering column and the steering module needed to be repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vehicle was over a 150,000 and would not be covered by the special coverage. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that in addition to the failures that the dealer diagnosed, the torque sensor needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 179,028. Fe.

14 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/14/2019

When I start my car, the steering wheel is locked up and a message stating "power steering" comes across the main screen. My vehicle was stationary. The issue only continues to get worse over time, and the current recall for this doesn't seem to cover my VIN number or yield an open recall. It is possible the person who had this car before me had the issue fixed and it is now happening again. Only after restarting the vehicle multiple times am I able to turn the wheel all the while it shakes back and forth as if there's an issue with the steering column.

15 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 08/16/2019

When I'm driving down the road the power steering just goes out on me. I took it to my mechanic and he said it was under the recall and sent me to a Chevrolet dealer (beckley Buick GMC automall) they looked at it and said the recall was fixed on 04/18/2017 and this was not covered under a recall. They told me it needed a new power steering module, column. I took it back to my mechanic and he said that it was covered under the recall and to contact Chevrolet and if they don't do anything to contact national highway traffic safety administration. I have two children and this is a concern for me because it just goes out while I'm driving and if I wreck and kill us or hurt someone else because I can't turn the steering wheel.

16 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 05/14/2019

While pulling into a driveway, it appeared as though the power steering stopped working, ie. Very hard to steer. Then there was a very loud "bang", and the steering wheel just, freewheeled, with loud "clicks" as it turned. There was no steering in either direction. Luckily, I wasn't at highway speeds. It appears that the intermediate shaft on the steering column broke. This was a recall item from 2014. We bought the car Nov. 2018. The local dealer told me that the recall expired in 2017. A recall expired??? and a steering column broke??? this is a major safety issue and should be addressed my gm, without an expiration. Not to mention, are the replacement parts identical to the part they replace? or has the defect been re-engineered to not happen again. Reports I've now read concerning this issue, state that the same condition re-occurs in less than 20,000 miles. This should not be considered a "wear and tear" item. This is a gm engineering defect and must be addressed by gm.

17 Steering Column problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/27/2019

I was driving my car on a city road and my steering stopped working. Thankfully I wasn't too far from home so I did get home safely. I had it towed to a (xxxx) dealership because my mechanic said that my warranty should cover it and that there was a recall. The dealership called me and told me I need a new steering module and column and that it is not covered. If I was on the highway and this happened I would have been seriously injured. I am pregnant and due in a few weeks and I need a safe reliable vehicle for my son and I. The power steering would stop working periodically, most often upon starting of the car but it failed while driving on the interstate one time. The mechanic read it as a c0545 code, steering wheel torque input sensor. The dealership stated the steering column needed to be replaced. This issue is well know, and it appears some vehicles with the same make and model and year were covered under a recall, but my particular one does not seem to be.

23 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

There also seems to be some play (twitch) in steering column when stopped at a red light or stop sign. After a restart, it went away but same problem came back again the next day. 30 Steering Column problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/02/2018

Steering column replacement 8/17/2009 and again 10/29/10 after recall. Failed again and just had to replace. Gm did not notify customers that there was a special coverage adjustment - power steering adjustment issued 5-23-2012. Under this I was covered by miles but not by date. This was clearly a way for gm to not fix this persistent problem. They clearly knew this was a problem but did not notify customers. They would not cover this work even though they clearly used sub par parts in there recall work.

31 Steering Column problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/01/2018

I have had nothing but problems with my electronic power steering amongst other things as well. The steering wheel locked up on me for the first time while parked. I turned the car off then back on & it went back to normal. I've been having issues with it making a sound in the steering wheel column & the steering wheel will move on it's own & will stick while I'm driving which makes it hard to control my vehicle. Also there is other electrical problems causing security light to come on & my car will lock up & I can't start it. The "service esc" light came on around the same time as well. The seatbelt light will come on when everyone has their seatbelt on too. There is obviously something going on with wire connections or something. I'm aware of recalls on the same exact year make & model as my vehicle for the same issues I'm having but no recalls have been issued for my specific vehicle. I have owned nothing but gm vehicles & this one has been nothing but problems!.

32 Steering Column problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu

33 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/09/2018

The problem started as the steering wheel would continuously bounce to the left and to the right, also could be described as a wobble when the car would be sitting still. If and when this would happen while driving, it would pull the car to the left or to the right. On top of this "wobble" the power steering only works when it wants to and will quit while driving or not be working when you start the car. The vehicle was taken to the dealership on the pretence that the car should fall under recall 14v153000 released in 2014. However the dealer and gm disagrees, even though the dealer has confirmed the eps in the steering column has gone bad and the power steering motor/module is also bad and needs replaced.

34 Steering Column problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

A clunking was coming from the steering column while driving, which ended up being the intermediate steering shaft.

35 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/30/2018

I was driving and a warning signal sound came on and the "power steering" message appears on the screen then the power steering went out. I was on on on the highway so that was the scary part. I started to go home because I knew it was not safe. The car would shake and make noises while I was stopped at a stoplight and the steering wheel would jerk and move and continue to rattle. I was able to pull over and turned the car off. I started it back up and it was okay. I started to drive and again the signal sound and the power steering message came on and it went out while I was turning which was a scary moment because an accident would've happened had another car been in the way. It was very difficult to drive and I was worried about an accident happening. I was told to take it to the shop and did so. Was told it was probably a sensor. I looked up recalls and that was a recall on my car. I called the gm/chevy consumer line and they recommended it take it to my local chevy dealer and stated the recall had been fixed. Local chevy dealer calls to tell me that there is a "bulletin" and the steering column needs to be replaced at a cost of $1,100. The steering column is listed on the previous recall but they only replaced a sensor. I was told I had to pay to have it fixed. I find it very disturbing that millions of cars have this issue and nothing is being put out to fix the problem. It is dangerous.
