Our car just recently starting having the power steering go out. Sometimes when we first start up the warning bell sounds and there is no steering. Other times we can be driving down the road and the warning buzzer sounds and there is no power steering. It is a lot scary when you are driving the interstate, running 75 mph and that buzzer goes off. We were told by the garage that there was a recall for this problem but it was only good for 10 years or 150,000 miles. Needless to say, we are over the 10 years but our mileage is at 103,000 miles. I would think that with this being a safety issue, the recall would still be open. We were told by a mechanic that it's a sensor in the steering column but can only be repaired by chevy.

My vehicle was giving a weird vibe when I drove it but the mechanic said it just needed an alignment. So I got that done. Shortly after it started again, this time it started this weird twitch in the steering column as well. The power steering went out, warning lights for power steering and ecs flashed continuously. I parked and turned the car off to go get fluid. When I got back realized no reservoir. So I turn the car back on and the power steering worked again. However, it stops working randomly without any type of indication.

Power steering intermittently works then does not work at random!! I have taken this vehicle to a couple of mechanics all have informed me this vehicle has the same power steering issues as all the cars that were recalled, being either faulty switch up under dash & or in the steering column however when I enter my VIN# for the recall it does not show up. I am afraid my car will cause me to crash .
While I was driving on a street I suddenly felt the steering wheel lock up on me making it extremely hard to turn. Thankfully I was able to get my car into a parking lot without causing an accident. I was then told my the auto shop that the issue was the steering column problem which apparently is a common issue with my car but for some reason my VIN number was not included in the recall?.

2006 Malibu VIN number shows no active recalls but my wife who drives the car informed me that the car was acting funny so I took for drive and first turn wheel hesitated like it didn't want to turn and when it did could feel it on the column like something was moving that wasn't suppose to this is main road through city heavy traffic so immediately headed for home and have to cross tracks to get there and when I went over sounds like front end wants to come off the car sounds like loose stability bar or joint and to top it off I noticed fuel gauge was going from full to empty and back up so in actuality she has know idea how much has she really has in vehicle I seen a lot of complaints about these things happening to this model and I send my wife and kids off daily in this vehicle with these problems that could pose a huge threat to their safety if it happens to her on main road or rr crossing.

Esc light is coming on and the steering wheel locks up and won't turn while driving and also while parked. Shutting off car then turning back on sometimes resets it but the steering column is also vibrating and almost feels as the steering wheel is going to fall off. Steering wheel is also twitching even while at a stop. My vehicle has been very well taken care of, all oil changes done on time snd regular maintaince.
Power steering column and motor went out after having this recall corrected. It is now out again, just 2 weeks over a year after having it corrected and gm will not pay to fix it. This creates a huge safety issue in my opinion. Also, the brake lamps continue to malfunction which were also corrected by a recall issue but continue to go bad.
The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 10 to 15 mph, the vehicle lost steering power. As a result, the vehicle veered left and crashed into a ditch. The vehicle was towed out of the ditch. The contact stated that a warning indicator illuminated only during the failure. After the crash, the steering column shook violently. The dealer diagnosed that the power steering module and the power torque module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 163,000.
I purchased my used 2004 Chevrolet Malibu November 23, 2016, the day before christmas. I was in motion merging into philadelphia's schuykill exp when my steering wheel locked in place for 2-3 seconds as I was going over 55 mph on a slight turn. I remember the wrench lighting up in the top left corner of the dashboard and reading power steering message on my the screen. The steering wheel stiffens as if you have that car that runs out of steering fluid. Another incident happened again while in motion, when I was coming down philadelphia pike merging on the I-95 south. Again, the steering wheel locks for a few seconds, reads power steering on the screen with the orange wrench in the bottom left corner of the dashboard. It's frightening because my car could go in another lane and hit an incoming car, or vice versa. The first time I couldn't pull over to recooperate because there are no shoulder lanes. I'm still having this issue and it has been two years. Even when I am parallel parked sometimes, my steering wheel tightens and I can't fully turn the wheel. When I called Chevrolet the first time, the representative assured me that there were no recalls shown for my VIN number. I was directed to go to chevy and told me it was a steering column issue. The cost and labor itself is steep. I call to folllow up and they basically told me they could not do anything about the problem because it was out of the time frame for the warranty which doesn't make sense because no manufacturer expects to recall to happen. . And paying for that repair is not even a guarantee that it will fix the issue based on the other complaints.
Letter from congresswoman foxx on behalf of constituent re 2012 Malibu steering column recall. The consumer was informed, his VIN was not included in the recall.
Several systems have been affected. The systems affected are the radio controls on the steering wheel, the power steering, the traction control and the rear defrost. There seems to be a short that goes from system to system. Modern Chevrolet in winston salem, nc said it was a short in wires on the steering column that was causing this. There are three recalls that would deal with this. The recalls are for steering, traction control and finally wiring. Both modern Chevrolet and Chevrolet corporate have said my vehicle is not covered due to the VIN #. I do not see where that matters. If a part is bad then all vehicles that part is used on should be covered no matter what. The steering was the most affected. The power steering would go out and it was very difficult to steer the car. This happened on several different occasions.
The steering goes in and out. Feels like you have very little control of wheel while driving. When accelerating or entering higher speeds a ding goes off. Have replaced steering column through dealer. Need to replace steering gear and control module. This should all be covered considering these parts probably all go bad having a defective steering column to begin with. I don't feel safe at all driving my car.
The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving at 35 mph, the steering column seized without warning. The failure occurred on several occasions. The contact restarted the vehicle but the issue recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 48,000.
The intermediate steering column - right under the steering wheel -makes a loud poppoing and banging noise when the brakes are applied and when the steering wheel is turned. Very noticeable when turning up a driveway and hittting the driveway bump.

I bought this vehicle used from paul conte Chevrolet in freeport, NY and it had 3 recalls that were not fixed before selling it to me. Now my power steering system malfunctioned to the point where the steering wheel would twitch uncontrollably and then become stiff, making it very difficult and dangerous to steer. I ended up paying for the repairs to the tune of almost $1700. 00 to replace the steering column and steering motor. After doing some research, I found that gm recalled many vehicles of the same year, make, and model as my car but for my specific VIN only the steering torque sensor was recalled. I did get the steering torque sensor recall fixed but my steering was still messed up. This recall did not fix my very serious and potentially dangerous issue. It was only after I authorized the steering column and motor repairs that the issue was resolved. Gm customer service is saying that even though I had the same exact issue as the gm recall for other Malibu's, because my specific VIN did not fall under the recall, I will not be getting reimbursed. It is not right that gm be able to get away with this. This serious steering issue could have caused me to crash. I would like to file a complaint against gm for failure to recall all vehicles that were affected by this power steering issue and also request that they reimburse me for fixing an issue that should have been taken care of before I even bought the car. The link below will take you to the official gm statement on this power steering issue. . Read more...
When making a left turn a clunking noise happenes. Told by service center its the steering column. I checked internet and found many, many many problems with the chev Malibu with the steering column. There is something wrong with this model. Cost about $500. 00 to fix and some people have the problem happen again.
Takata recall: steering. My car had the steering column replaced over a year. On 11/18/2015 I was driving on the fwy when my steering wheel got hard on the curve, was a very scary situacion. I took the car to the dealer and they said there's anything they can do about it, because the warranty was over, I cal gm and they said the part was replaced already replaced. On my opinion if they put a new part and last less then 2 years that means still defected, because it should last longer . Please let me know what should I do about this problem. I'm very scared to drive the car like that.

Steering column popping, clunking, and binds up during driving or stationary. More often when turning right but happens when turning left. Sometime the car needs more force to return straight after veering right on highway. . Could not turn into right lane because the steering wheel would not turn that sharp until it popped. Dealer said the steering box separated and needs replaced; its a $1,095. Repair for me.
Takata recall; steering column is loose(stationary, motion). Wheel bearings are bad. I took the car to a Chevrolet dealer(clemson rd. ). They were not able to find an issue. Everytime I maintenanceperformed I am advised to have the ;steeting column check, rattling and loose, maybe a piece of plastic?). My second trip to the Chevrolet dealer did not allow enough time for a diagnostic. I purchased the car used from united auto sales. The wheel bearings(motion) were bad when I purchased and the dealer (united car autosales). I replaced the wheel bearings once already and have to replace again. The car is making a clapping noise and speed is impeded.
Being a second owner of this vehicle I noticed that at times the power steering would become ineffective and steering wheel was very difficult to move, along with a lot of clunking in the steering column. . . Especially at lower speeds. After owning this vehicle for two months, I was backing out of my driveway and the wheel was extremely heavy as the power assist was not working and the entire steering popped and I had no more steering control ( the steering wheel was free wheeling). Luckily, this situation did not happen on my commute to work at speeds of 65 mph! as it happens the free wheeling of the steering wheel has damaged the clock-spring inside the steering hub that provides power to the airbag and cruise and radio controls, mounted on the steering wheel. I am convinced that this problem was a design flaw in the steering system of this car, but am told that there is no recall on this car for this particular problem. My mechanic has estimated a repair bill close to $1000 and this should be taken care of by gm, in my opinion. . . As it is a life threatening issue (no steering control at high speeds)!.
