While driving, the power steering failed and it was extremely difficult to turn the wheel at approxmatly 50 mph. Contacted gm about this issue, since similar models of the same year, with different VIN numbers, have been recalled for this same exact issue and they refused to consider repairing the vehicle, just because my VIN number was not included in the recall, but the same faulty parts are in the car.

Car loses it's electric power steering randomly, which is a safety concern. Apparently, there are 2 separate recalls on the steering components for 2006 Malibus. Gm says that 1 of the recalls related to my car and the repair was made. Since this is a "closed" case and the repair was made I have been getting the run around from both the dealership that made the repair and gm headquarters. Please note that the issue is the exact same issue that the recall was for. Clearly, the recall was just a band-aid, not a fix as I have read several other people having the same issue! radio illuminates that the power steering has failed (which is what the recall is for). This is definitely a safety issue and needs to be 1. Investigated 2. Fixed by gm and not the owner of the vehicle. The dealership wants me to pay $130 to diagnose the problem and then charge me to replace the same part the recall was supposed to fix! this is crazy and do we really need to diagnose the problem when it clearly says (and I can feel) that the power steering is failing? please investigate this as it is definitely a safety issue.

When driving the car the dash will display " esc power steering" and the power steering stops working. Shutting the engine off and restarting the car will turn the power steering back on. For how long? maybe 1 mile or 100 miles. There is no warning that the power steering is going to fail. This has happened while driving on a street, turning and sitting still.

At approx. 140k miles, the eps module failed and caused the power steering to fail and the car immediately changed to manual steering while driving on the highway. The warning chime alerted me to the eps module failure. After getting to a safe area and turning the car off and back on, the eps resumed working for a breif period, only to fail again the same way. This occured multiple times over the next few days until even turning the car off and on again did nothing. The eps just will not engage now at all. Gm issued a recall for other 2008 Malibu's for this exactfailure but my VIN is not listed. I have heard/read about this exact issue from many other 2008 Malibu owners.

Electronic power steering failure. All of a sudden the message center beeped and gave message power steering and the steering wheel started jerking out of control and could hardly steer. Several times after restarting steering would work for awhile. There are recalls on other 2008 but I was told mine had a special warranty that ran out. I just recently bought the car and it isn't right that I would have to pay $1500 to fix this defect. It is a safety issue when all of a sudden your steering wheel jerks out of your hand and moves on its own.
Power steering failure. Hearing clicking noise. Service airbag.
Tl the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 5 mph, the steering wheel became difficult to turn and the power steering ability failed. Purchased the vehicle used in may of 2015. While driving the power steering assist fails and there is a ecm. Turn the car off and it resets. Now completely power steering failing completely. Saw there was a recall in 2015 but never received a bulletin. Told by gm that they will not cover the recall because the car is out of warranty???.

While driving esc light came on power steering issue displayed and power steering failed. Stopped and turned car off; upon restart no issue.
Power steering goes in and out. Etc light comes on and flashes power steering failure. Upon reading, gm issued a recall for this but our dealer has no recall information on this. Safety issue, could lead to a crash.

My 2010 chevy Malibu is losing power steering during normal driving conditions, the service ecm is displaying and then the power steering failure is on the dash. I can get the power steering to turn back on once I turn the engine off and back on again but it continues to shut off.
Power steering assist failed on the highway. Was able to pull off and turn the car off and back on and it came back momentarily. Sporadically went on and off for several days, however have had no power steering since Friday October 12th, today is October 16th.

Power steering fails often in cold weather but has grown to happen in warmer weather as well. Getting worse over the course of the last 3 years. Happens both in motion and stationary. Usually happens when turning the wheel but not always. There are recalls for this same problem with older model Malibus and other gm vehicles but not this model even though others have reported the same issue.
Tl the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 45 mph, the power steering failed and the power steering, check engine, and brake system warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that nothing could be done. The failure mileage was approximately 178,000.

In an attempt to avoid oncoming traffic, the contact yanked the steering wheel in order to pull the vehicle over. York Chevrolet Buick (2456 us 40, brazil, indiana 47834, (812) 420-1015) requested that a diagnostic be performed and offered the option of an extended warranty. When driving, go to turn wheel and it hesitates and sticks for a second. Does it very often whether turning left or right. Start the car sometimes and warning bell sounds, power steering appears on radio screen and power steering has failed. Turn car off for awhile, turn it back on and power steering is working again, sometimes. And last, start car, start driving and the gas gauge goes from full down to empty. Warning bell sounds and low fuel appears on radio screen. All these things happen randomly while driving on a street. Have seen recalls for these things on other 06 Malibus but never for mine. My garage wants hundreds of dollars to fix these problems. Something I can not afford.
Esc light went on. Suggest was to get esc serviced because of power steering failure. When engine ws turned off and turned back on, everything worked. But the same thing continued to happen time and time again. Went on the internet and noticed that a number of complaints have been filed similar to what I am experiencing. This happened at slow speed, higher speeds and when stopped. Car was drivable without power steering but difficult to maneuver.
Only 90,000 miles on my car and just a few days ago the power steering would fail when starting up the car and I get warnings and chimes saying power steering then esc now disabled. This problem would correct itself if I turned off the car then turned back on again. A few days later that no longer worked to get the power steering to work/activate. Now I have to apply slight turning force to the steering wheel while starting the car to get it to work. But now I have a new issue to this problem as of today the power steering fails while driving the car. I was changing lanes and the power steering failed the steering wheel became very stiff and I almost crashed into the car in front of me because I could not complete my lane change. Im now scared to drive my car. I keep good care of my car and have it maintenenced well. Its in excellent condition and this is the only thing wrong. I tried calling gm to ask if this is a recall issue because I find everywhere online this is a major issue with my year and make but gm on the phone said my VIN has no recall and im stuck to pay full bill to fix and is not a defect or gm problem. I do not think this is my problem and is a defect. I feel gm should fix this. My car still has 2 years left on bank loan to pay off. I cannot afford to fix a manufacture defect. I also strongly feel this is a major saftey issue as this can result in major car accident. I do not have strong arms and I cannot operate manual steering to avoid crash if loss of power steering on highway at high speed or even in city at slow speed.
Power steering failed while driving. This happened in a curved part of the highway at ~45 mph. Was able to make the drive home which was ~2 miles. Restarted the car at home and everything worked fine until 5 days later - same problem. Service esc and power steering illuminated on dash.
Gm "special warranty" coverage (but not a recall), 15356. Received documentation attesting to the identified problem. Document advises not to take to dealer unless symptoms manifest themselves as outlined in document. Now, symptoms are clearly evident; electronic power steering has failed. Gm refuses to cover repair because the "special coverage" time limit has elapsed. Unsatisfactory. A recognized manufacturing defect deserves to be repaired at the expense of the manufacturer, not shuffled off to alternative descriptive language (special coverage) which allows them to abrogate their responsibilities under an artificial time limit. Car is unsafe to drive, therefore a liability. Gm is deliberately shirking their maintenance and fiduciary responsibilities and allowing for acknowledged defective cars to continue to be operated on roads in north America. As the opening line of my "recall" letter professes: your satisfaction is very important to us. My reply: my satisfaction is conditional on operating a vehicle that is safe to use; acknowledged safety defects that go unrepaired seriously erode this owner satisfaction as such.
I was driving in my neighborhood, when suddenly, my power steering failed. I had to use a great deal more effort to steer the car to avoid parked cars, as well oncoming traffic. I had a couple near misses, but made it to my driveway. Since, I have had the same power steering fail 4 times while driving in neighborhood and on the highway each timehighway. Fortunately, I avoided contact with other cars while moving, but only due to my experienced driving. If my kids were driving this car, they would have had an accident! now, I learned gm had an effective recall for my model, but for earlier years up through 2009. Hence, they have closed said recall and left me with nary an option. I am turning to you to see if a renewed recall can be reopened!.
Power steering failed while on interstate, and caused the esc and traction to turn off as well. Cruise control continues to function. Shutting vehicle completely down and starting the vehicle again resets everything.
On 02/19/2018 while stopped at a red light my 2011 Malibu's steering wheel began to move right and left (oscillating) by itself. I pulled into the nearest parking lot of a local store and noticed I no longer had any power assist for the steering and my information console screen light up with a power steering failure. I shut the car off and waited 10 minutes, restarted and the power assist returned, the console light went out. However the steering wheel still pulses back and forth by itself, so the problem, I feel, could return at any time. I had a heart attack recently and physically cannot steer the car without power assist, this was very stressful for me, I am afraid now to drive this thing in it's current condition. I researched this and it is a very common problem with chevy Malibus, I feel this is an extremely dangerous issue with this model and could easily result in a needless death, I hope general motors fixes this problem, please add our VIN to the current recall campaign #14v153000. Thank you sincerely lori reehil.
