41 Steering Failed problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/21/2015

I received a recall notice on the car that the eps motor controller may cause the vehicle to suddenly lose eps. My car is experiencing this. The recall is only good for cars less than 10 years old or less than 150,000 miles which ever comes first. My car is above the 150,000 miles because it was driven for several years long distances on the highway. So my steering is failing, but gm will not repair it under the recall and I can not afford this expensive repair. How is that fair?.

M. For over 30 years and worked at the repairing dealer for over 20 years but I am retired now it is not the dealerships fault just defective parts or design . 48 Steering Failed problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

My 14-yr old daughter was driving our 2009 Chevrolet Malibu and all of a sudden the steering locked up and she was unable to turn the wheel (talk about a scary moment for a young driver and not to mention me). There were chimes and a message that displayed a steering failure. We stopped the car, shut it off then back on and the steering was back to 'normal'. I reviewed the recalls on this make & model and I see that there are a number of gm vehicles that are experiencing this same issue. We took our car to the dealer we purchased it through and he said the vehicle did show a code for the failure but our VIN was not included in the recalls. The service manager then tells me it will be approx. $600. 00 to replace the entire steering column. I mentioned & showed him the bulletins that have been posted regarding this issue but he said sorry, your car is not listed and it will be $600 to fix. I left very disappointed to say the least. Then earlier today, my wife called and said this issue happened to her for the 1st time so now I'm angry. Gm knows they have an issue as you can see with all the service bulletins posted on this but they don't seen to care. I really hope gm understands how important it is to be able to steer your vehicle properly. Gm, be a reputable company and take care of this issue. If you care about the consumer, do the right thing and ensure your vehicles are safe to drive.

50 Steering Failed problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/01/2014

Last spring I had an issue with my 2010 chevy Malibu with the electronic power steering assembly. The electronic steering column assembly failed resulting in no power steering. After research I became aware this is a common problem with chevy Malibu's but was only covered in recalls until 2009. I paid for repair on this out of pocket like many other people who have filed complaints as seen with research on the internet. I have just discovered the company that made the steering column for gm, dorman, is recalling their steering column that was installed in the 2010 chevy Malibu. This recall was posted in July. With the trouble gm has been through they should be on a better honor system. This car was manufactured by general motors and should be recalled by general motors who should be reimbursed by dorman. The phone number for dorman is 1-800-523-2492 and you could potentially be reimbursed but you will need the part number of the defective steering column. General motors offers no cooperation in part number information. Even with previous calls I had with gm saying all parts used in cars were identified by the VIN number of the car so they know the origin where all parts were manufactured. It appears to be a finger pointing game and the loser is the consumer.

51 Steering Failed problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/25/2014

The power steering sensor is bad and to repair it they say the entire steering column has to be replaced. This is my daughters car and would be bad if the power steering went out while she was driving. So far the steering has only failed when she started the car. This has happened two times in three days.

52 Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/16/2014

Merging onto interstate at 55 merge speed and as entering onto first thru lane the power steering died out and acceleration dropped on its own. Nearly hit by an 18 wheeler that had been safely back from my entry point before the steering and engine both failed. I pulled as hard as I could to the right and a bell rang but there was no check engine light or any other indicator light for the steering. When I braked, the steering came back and I was able to pull to the right out of harms way. There was no other car on the entry ramp or I am sure we would have been rear ended at high speed this happens often in ordinary traffic at speeds between 35 and 45 once the car is warmed up when I attempt to change lanes and sometimes a bell rings and other times it does not. I received a recall notice #13036 and it describes symptoms included here and additional potential problems. The part is not yet available as gm has been telling me since March of this year. I have discontinued driving this car unless it is absolutely necessary and if the distance is less than 5 miles because it has not yet warmed up to cause the problem. This is a dangerous defect and we were lucky to have not been killed by the 18 wheeler.

60 Steering Failed problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/30/2013

Power steering warning plus the check electrical system came on when we started the car, and the steering would not work. We were at the time in the north carolina mountains. We turned the ignition off, tried again, and the power steering returned. Nonetheless this made for a scary trip down mountain roads. This failure did not occur again for several months. Then in the winter of 2013-2014 it began to happen more frequently. In April 2014 we told the Chevrolet service advisor who said to bring in the car while the steering was not on power. So we did with difficult steering in city traffic. The advisor diagnosed steering column failure. Gm has offered to pay part of the price of repair. This offer came after extensive conversations with gm and the local dealer with whom we have done a significant amount of business.

63 Steering Failed problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 08/21/2012

Was making a right hand turn to enter onto the expressway and steering either locked up or became very hard to steer (it all happened quickly) causing the car to hit the curb and severely damaging the wheel, alignment, etc. Gm replaced the faulty power steering box (recall) but has found themselves not liable for the collateral damage sustained because of the faulty power steering. Gm says I have no proof that the damage that is visible on the vehicle was directly caused by steering failure. Really??!! I've always been a big chevy fan, but this leaves a very bitter taste that may never go away!!!!! ## VIN failed ## chevy Malibu maxx 2006 ##.

66 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/07/2011

While my wife was crossing the verranzno bridge between brooklyn and staten island the electrical steering failed. This created a extreme safely issue since my wife did not have enough strength to control the steering. This forced her to slow to a stop while other cars were going full speed creating a safely issue. When she turn the car on again she managed to get the car off the bridge and to the dealer for replacement. My wife was lucky that is wasn't in a condition that she was making a turn or some other position that could had cause an accident. There were two other people in the car and in no time should a steering failure cause almost complete lost of control because you not have strength to turn the wheel.

68 Steering Failed problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 08/21/2011

The first time the power steering intermittenly went out I was just parking. The Malibu has electronic steering so there is no warning when the steering is about to fail like with a normal power steering pump. I checked some connections and thought I had it fixed because it worked when I started the car again. A few weeks later I was in the city and the steering quit working again if I wouldn't have had a good hold on the steering wheel when I was turning I could have easily ran into someone or even worse hit a pedestrian! this problem is well documented in Malibu's of this age and a common problem. It is only a matter of time before this causes a death if it hasn't already!.

70 Steering Failed problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 07/19/2011

My 2008 Malibu has a power steering problem. On a daily basis the power steering becomes erratic and fails to react properly under normal driving conditions, usually at highway speeds. While stopped, the steering wheel will turn left and right on its own. When this occurs at hightwasy speed control of the car is dangerous. Two hands are needed to keep car in lane and not cross the line into other vehicles. Problem began when mileage hit 45,000 miles. Occasionally, a chime will occur and indicate power steering in the display but by the time the chime occures the steering problem is gone. This issue is consistent and intermitent on a daily basis. I have researched this problem for chevy Malibu and have found that thousands of Malibu owners are experiencing this problem. This is not a problem caused by inproper routine maintenance. This steering problem is a failure of a component in the steering assembly that is not subject to routine maintenance. This is a defective part!!! as a percentage of Malibus on the road that have this problem I would venture that it is very high and the number is increasing. The electronic assist powersteering in the i4 Malibu's is a road handling nightmare and gm has no interest in fixing this problem. I would expect a serious problem like this to be made a recall issue before there is a fatality and then gm and obama motors will be sued for reckless endangerment.
