1 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 09/05/2020

It feels as though the steering is loosening. Alignment is off as well. Both issues began about the same time. A dull clunking sound can be heard when turning right. This car appears to have already had the steering replaced from the 2014 recall but I believe the replacement parts are also defunct and should and will be recalled again. It is not seemingly dependent on set rpm or mph to make the noise or feel loose in my hands. It is intermittent and unpredictable. Cruise control still working, eps light not lit. Struts are going so may be the issue. Just in case it is the power steering having not properly been repaired after the recall, or repaired with shoddy parts, I thought it best to report the issue. Lives were lost to the ignition switch failures from chevy, luckily I pulled into a shop immediately after my car shut off the first time and got it repaired. Months later people were dying. Friends of mine. Not me. I trusted my gut. I knew that was dangerous and I have the same inclination now with this issue.

Failure Date: 09/20/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving 70 mph and tried to change to the right lane, the steering became loose and the contact lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle swerved to the left, hit another vehicle and crashed into a guard rail. There was no warning indicators. The driver's side air bag deployed. The contact (only) sustained injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard from where the insurance company took over the vehicle for assessment. The failure mileage was estimated at 99,000. The contact stated that she received a recall. I searched the VIN and advised that there was no recall. Fe.

6 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2011 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/01/2015

2/28/15 twitch in steering at 55 mph. (5 twitch/8 mi. ) had been snowy with subzero temps, and suspected ice in steering linkage. Following day exhibited same twitches, but fewer. Backing out of parking space when steering became very difficult. Messages on driver information: power steering failure, esc requires service, and a yellow triangle with wavy marks was illuminated. Drove 2. 25 mi to relative's home. Turned car off & restarted; power steering worked again. Next day checked fuse connections on passenger side of console, and under hood near battery. 80a power steering fuse was loose on one side. Nuts securely tightened, but rivets on fuse body were loose; lug could be moved approx 1/32". Replaced fuse, and worked better. Then noticed that twitching had returned; was prevalent with vehicle stopped and running. On wed drove vehicle to pickup lunch,; steering wheel was twitching with car in park and engine running. Used remote start system to let engine run as it was near 0 f and had only driven 3 mi. Returned to car within 10 min remote start run time, inserted key; power steering didn't work & same messages displayed. Stopped & restarted car; power steering didn't work. Arranged for repair, and drove car to shop later that afternoon; power steering worked, but lots of twitching. Steering column replaced due to steering wheel torque sensor code c0545. Power steering failed and fought me as evidenced by uneven jerky turning force. System allowed steering wheel to run about 1/8 turn, and then dampened turning. Have a sore right shoulder. Force required to steer without power steering is inexcusable. System does not disengage when it fails, and intermittently interacts while display indicates it's out of commission. System is inherently dangerous due to function during failure.

9 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/29/2012

The contact owns a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the front end of the vehicle started to wobble at 55 mph and above. The contact also stated that the dealer did an alignment four times and replaced the steering column once but the failure recurred. The rear right wheel had been leaning outward from the time the vehicle was purchased and had not been corrected by the alignment. The failure mileage was 11 and the current mileage was 19,500. The consumer stated from the day she purchased the vehicle, the steering was difficult to control. As time went on, the problem became worse. The vehicle was wobbly, choppy and careening . It was difficult to control on uneven pavement roads and streets and extremely difficult to maintain at 55 mph and higher. Each time the consumer went to the dealer, the vehicle was out of alignment. At times, the steering was very loose. Also, the shifting was erratic and lagged. It lagged from stop signs. It often failed to down shift to gain power needed on highway upgrades. When the consumer attempted to pass semi-trucks on an uneven pavement on the interstate, the vehicle pulled to the right, jerked to the left with almost an uncontrollable shifting and swaying. If there were curve , the vehicle would dangerously swing wide out into the curves. The steering wheel, would then freeze up and would become difficult to turn and steer safely. On one occasion, while driving on the interstate highway, the consumer had just passed a semi at a speed of 70 mph and as she was returning to the right lane, the vehicle stuttered and started to stop. She pushed the accelerator pedal to the floor and there was a dangerous lag before enough power came to the vehicle.

10 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 06/01/2011

1st incidence on highway, 2 yrs. Ago steering tightened up and light with car/wrench came on. It resolved on its own quickly soon after calling on star for assistance. Just recently more random incidences of light coming on with no noticeable steering difficulty. Today, while pulling out of driveway, steering frozen, car/wrench light came on, stuck in middle of the street. Turned car off and restarted. Steering loosened up then froze again, could not turn wheel at all, still stuck in the middle of the street. Turned car off and on again. It loosened up again and was able to drive it without further light or stiffness. Planning on visiting the dealership this week for a check up. This should be covered along with the recall for 2005 Malibu since it is the power steering issue.

11 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 11/04/2010

Steering has been loose while turning left and tighter when turning right since I first got this vehicle. On Nov,4 2010 I was pulling out of store and accelerated the steering seems to have locked up and rendered me unable to steer pulled on side of the road to calm down then began driving again when accelerating the steering lock up again. Brought vehicle to gm repair shop they said the steering motor and steering shaft were not working properly and need to be replaced.

12 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 06/19/2010

I pulled out of my driveway and immediately noticed that the steering was loose. I was able to make it to the end of the road but after a few seconds, it started tightening up and then it locked. I was not able to turn the steering wheel. I shut off the car and when I restarted it, the same thing happened. I had to do this 3 times to get back to my driveway. I called the dealership and they informed me that there was only a recall on the chevy cobalt steering but not the Malibu.

13 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 05/04/2010

Made a "pit stop" on way to work my car made a sound alert and "power steering" came on over my radio message window. 2 weeks ago steering felt loose turning left but a little stiff turning right but after a few days it was fine. This morning it happened again but today was the only day of the alert sound and message. Found it could be that the electric power steering column needs to be replaced cost ($600 - $1500). Power steering electric motor / control module / steering rack / failing sensor in steering column / voltage problem between the alternator & ignition coil assembly. I have printed out 11 pages of similar complaints and noticed the chevy cobalt & other chevy models had or are having a recall for the same complaints as the chevy Malibu but the Malibu is not one of them. This problem can cause complete steering failure or just very hard steering (unpredicted) & can cause accidents. I'm still waiting to find out which expensive repair mine will be. I did find that if my VIN is between 5f100001 - 5f250216 that I need to call chevy if my mileage is under 70,000 & they cover the cost of repair. I don't have my VIN as my car is in the shop now.

14 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/30/2009

My mother owns a 2004 chevy Malibu. The problem is that when she driving and about to make a turn the steering wheel looses power and is hard to turn. This could become a problem if snow or ice on the ground or she trying to avoid an accident. I had it over for service at a local chevy dealer. I was told that this is an occurring problem with this model. But that doesn't fix the problem. My mother is 72 years old.

15 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/11/2008

Electric steering will loose power. The steering column has been replaced twice. The first time the deals replaced it free of charge. Second time the dealer paid for the parts but I had to pay for the labor $ 225. 00.

16 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 04/02/2008

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu maxx. While driving 55 mph, the steering became loose. The contact overcorrected her turn. In addition, the steering wheel locks intermittently. The dealer stated that they have not had any other complaints related to the steering; therefore, they referred the contact to NHTSA to file a safety complaint. The failure mileage was 48,000 and current mileage was 48,050.

17 Steering Is Loose problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 07/28/2005

Have had numerous warranty work done. Purchased car 4 months ago with 24,000 miles now has 28,000. 6 warranty replacements. Around 25,000 started car and steering wheel was turning violently. Shut car off and it was fine. Later noticed steering was looser and thumping noise. Chevy replaced steering gear. Now at current mileage did the same thing has happened and replacing another component in steering. This is very dangerous. When driving around turns it felt like I had no control over car. Now that my warranty is out my when I put my car into d half the time it will jump into gear and sometimes it gets stuck or wants to stop at r. A car with 28,000 miles should not be having this kind of trouble. I can only imagine what it will be like with 75,000 miles on it.
