I was backing up from the store and I heard a traction noise doing from the steering wheel, it got worse stiffer and stiffer to steer , I have 2 children in the car with me scare to death to hit something!, my husband took it to the dealership they charged us 520 dollars with a discount they said. So upsetting because it is a 2010 Malibu only 49000 miles , doing some research I know there have been cars recall from gm from the same problem!!! are they waiting for someone to die to do something about it!! so upset!.

For some reason the entire interior trim on the door panels have come unglued and detached from the doors. It looks terrible. I recently received a recall notice regarding a knocking noise in the steering. Of course, this has been going on for years and now the notice says my car must have less than 150k miles on it. I dare say there are not many 2004 vehicles with less than 150k miles? mine is around 164k. We use to spray grease on the joint where it hits when the steering wheel is turned. I had been told a dealer would want to replace the entire rack n pinion on the vehicle, but that would not correct the problem. Guess I am just out of luck.

We own a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu that has a problem with excessive vibration (shuddering) in the steering of the car especially when turning a corner. But now the car is developing more abnormal issues like the steering wheeling is moving back and forth on its own while driving on a flat straight smooth road. Also noted are clicking noises now heard in the steering wheel hub. With the worsening condition of the steering I am becoming reluctant to drive the car because I am concerned about the steering failing while operating the car. I have notified Chevrolet and I am waiting for them to get back to me. The car has been in the Chevrolet service dept. At least 6 times since 9/05/2013 for this problem and with 3 of those times was with a Chevrolet engineer. But Chevrolet cannot fix the problem and it is getting worse.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 15v064000 (steering), however, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds and made a left or right turn, there was a clicking noise that came from the steering wheel and the steering wheel became difficult to turn without warning. The failure recurred on several occasion and appears to occur when its wet outside. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was diagnosed that the steering shaft was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 36,521. Sw.
I purchased this vehicle in 2006 with 17,000 miles at the carmax superstore in naperville illinois and have had several serious issues since. The leaking sunroof with the innumerable failed attempts at repair. The leak has never been resolved and I have resorted to covering the vehicle with a tarp during inclement weather. The constant clicking noise in the steering when moving the steering wheel back and forth and the severe stiffness in the steering wheel when curb side parking between parked vehicles. The intermittent ignition failure, the vehicle will not turn over unless you depress the accelerator slightly. There were countless futile attempts at repair for all these defects through out the years of warranty and extended warranty coverage. The failed attempts of correctly diagnosing and properly repairing these defects by the englewwood auto group in englewood new jersey have left me unsatisfied and super frustrated. Today I am writing because the operators seat has now tilted to the right and is leaning against the center console. There was nothing of significance that occurred while driving that immediately alerted me of this problem, I was simply adjusting the seat when I noticed that the seat was rubbing against the center console. Upon inspecting underneath the seat I observed that the right rear corner does not rise when engaging the electric seat controls. The angle of the lean is so bad that it affects my posture and pains my lower back. I am also afraid that the seat will completely collapse while I am driving. When the seat is lowered all the way down it does level to its acceptable norm, but at 5 feet 4 inches tall I cannot operate safely that low to the floor. For a vehicle that is driven on average once a week it is plagued with some serious manufacturer defects that the dealerships' service department is unable or unwilling to repair.

On may 20, 2014 I filed a complaint regarding the electronic power steering, the fuel level indicator and the clunk noise in the steering system on my car. I contacted general motors by e mail and they gave me a telephone number to call. Today, may 27, 2014 I called general motors regarding their recall for the power steering problem. They informed me that my car was not included in the recall. They gave me the telephone number of a dealer in puerto rico where I have to take the car for a diagnostic. Gm will not cover the cost of the repairs. Why do we have to pay for the bad job the car manufacturers do when they make their cars? there must be a way in which consumers get compensated by these companies for the expenses they impose on us with their defective vehicles. For me this may be the last Chevrolet I will buy.

Making a right turn, I heard a clunking noise from the steering, the car pulled to the right and the steering wheel felt like it the power steering failed. About 1 year ago, I have had the car in for service at the dealers for a knocking in the steering and they found nothing wrong.
Knocking noise in the steering column, noise and difficulty turning. Noticable play in the steering of the vehicle. Occurs several times a week, I refuse to drive my car on the freeway or at high speeds in fear of electric power steering going out.
Problems with my 2008 chevy Malibu. Upon starting the vehicle the steering wheel shutters and noise comes from steering column. The "power steering" display message comes up. The owners manual refers to seeing the dealership for this issue, but they can seem to fix it for me. It can be cleared, but is very annoying to happen to your car everyday. This issue started roughly 3 months after I purchased the vehicle in March of 2011. There's no speed range that the issue occurs in. It happens randomly at any speed. While driving steering wheel shutters randomly, and steering becomes dangerous. Seems that you can only turn the wheel in exact 5 degree increments, which has almost cause several collisions with other vehicles. It seems this problem is evident in other Malibu models equipped with electric power steering, but I haven't seen a recall or service publications to remedy the issue. Gm knows about this, but is deliquent in taking any action to fix permanently. Please help!.
The drivers seat frame broke and I had to replace. Also the car makes a popping noise when steered. Currently trying to get that into the dealer because it has been doing it for almost a year.
I would like to amend my previous complaint number: 10407288 the fatality that I mentioned was not proven to be of a direct result of a steering failure. However, according to complaint number: 10364224 the Chevrolet Malibu had steering shaft replaced prior to accident. This was performed at gm dealer due to popping noise while steering, diagnosed at dealer. Repair paid for by owner. Chevy Malibu had 65,000 miles at time of accident.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to maneuver. In addition, there was a grinding noise coming from the steering column. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000. The VIN was not available.
This is my second complaint for my 05 Malibu LS, I purchased in 2006, approximately 20,000 miles, noticed shortly after the poping noise in the steering area. I was told at that time gm was aware and working on it. Kept taking it back for repairs/service. In 08 had the steering gear box replaced, now I'm told it needs to be replaced again along with the I shaft. Current mile 109,000, it has only been 50,000 miles since the last gear box was replaced. I asked if this would fix the problem or would I have replace it again and they could not say and offered me $2,000 on trade in. Lol I don't think so. And I wouldn't want to make this someone elses problem. When will gm, with all the complaints do a recall?!! what will it take to get a recall on this safety issue will someone have to die? gm must see that this is a big problem. . .
Power steering issue. The power steering in car made noise when under warrenty. I brought it in at 35,000 miles. The gm dealer lubed the steering shaft. At 90,000 miles they told me the steering system was shot and I needed to pay over $1,000 for a new steering system. . . .
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu maxx supersport. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 to 50 mph the steering wheel became very loose and it was difficult for her to control of the vehicle. When making a left or right turns she heard a popping noise in the steering column. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who advised her that the steering column needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and advised her to take the vehicle to a dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving approximately 60 mph, the contact noticed that the steering wheel would move from one side to the other, making it impossible to control the vehicle. Also, when attempting to start the vehicle, the contact heard a buzzing noise as the steering wheel would violently jerk from left to right. The dealer advised the contact that there were no recalls related to the failure. The contact did not inform the manufacturer of the failure nor was the vehicle diagnosed or repaired. The current mileage was 67,000 and the failure mileage was 64,000.
2005 chevy Malibu steering is failing. Loud clunking noise coming from steering column and the steering wheel turns wile the tires do not. This is very dangerous and a complete safety hazard! I am being told this will not be covered by gm. A safety recall is needed.
Slack in the intermediate steering shaft, felt the knocking noise in the steering gear and the intermediate shaft. Noise was noticeable in the steering shaft, replaced immediate steering shaft.
2000 chevy Malibu-rack & pinion mount on driver side broke from frame. Before failure font end shook like brakes were bad. Car began to steer hard and make load noise (felt under driver side floor board). Upon looking into problem I noticed that the mounts are only made of cheap sheet metal. Passenger side is showing signs of extreme rusting also. To repair will require front sub frame to be replaced. I believe that gm is putting money first and personal safety second.

2005 chevy Malibu steering is a problem after 47,000 miles travel. Steering wheel makes noise as it turns to right or left. Maybe steering mechanism problem.
The steering on my 2007 chevy Malibu locked up on me as I was driving down the road, it did it again as I was truning in the parking lot. It has done this several times in the past. It also makes a loud clunking noise when I turn the steering wheel sometimes.
Just bought my Chevrolet 2007 Malibu and it has been making a popping noise in the steering when making turns and driving. I have read online about numerous people having the same problem with these vehicles, and in some instances even causing them to crash.
The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving various speeds, the contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the steering shaft u-joint. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. I have a 2007 chevy Malibu with steering problems. For a long time is has made a popping noise when turning the steering wheel at any speed. I took it to gm several months ago and they made some type of adjustment and it stopped. It has recently started again. A couple weeks ago when driving on the interstate the steering wheel began to move left to right by itself. I could feel the car move also. It will also do this when the car is running idle. It has done this several times now. When this occurred I could definitely feel a loss of control with the vehicle. It is my understanding many people are experiencing many steering problems with this vehicle and gm will not do anything about it. They told me the cost to replace the steering column is around $1000 at the owners expense. This is a very serious safety issue and should be recalled and repaired by gm.
Car suddenly began steering hard to the right and made clunking noises when the steering wheel was turned. Discovered that the left side mounting bolt of the steering rack ripped through the rusted out frame cradle, leaving the rack attached by only one bolt. This allows the rack to pivot upwards instead of properly steering the vehicle. The right hand mount is also very rusted and is nearing failure. Car has not been repaired at this time, since the entire front frame will need to be replaced.

My 2006 Malibu maxx has been have issues with the steering system. Started out with an intermittent clunking noise several months ago. The car has only 67,000 miles on it. Now it clunks every time you turn the steering wheel. The front end has always road ruff like a steering vibration but thought it was just the make of the car. Our 00' monte carlo and 00' impala in comparison never road like this. Thought it was the tires so we upgraded to a better riding tire, did not make a difference. Over the last couple weeks steering noise getting worse, sensor light came on indicating power steering. Check with mechanic and cannot find anything that appears wrong on vehicle. Just this weekend on the entrance ramp on the interstate the wheel just jerked to the right. Was able to bring it back to central position quickly but was concerned. Happened today to my wife on the way to the store on a two lane road. Luckily it jerked her to the right and she was able to steer it back to the center position. Concerned of potential for serious accident and will not be so lucky next time. After plugging in steering issues with Malibu maxx's, I was shocked to see hundreds of complaints on forums and consumer sites regarding a range of years with the maxx. Gm needs to wake up, does it take people dying or seriously getting hurt before they will pay attention to all these people and their issues and serious ones at that. My husband is a Ford mechanic and wanted me to buy a Ford because of quality issues, but I love the style of the maxx, the cargo capacity and now I'm having second thoughts as no one seems to be getting help other than gm has some solutions that are costing the consumer lots of money and there are still issues after the fixes. I'm seriously considering getting rid of it and settling for a car that will insure me a safe ride and keep my passengers safe. Wise up to this before people are seriously hurt. Thank you.
