1 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/08/2021

As time is going on the steering is getting less controllable. I have yet to get into an accident but I can feel the car swerving a bit when I'm steering (swerving I didn't do). I looked up my VIN on iseecars. Com to see if there was a recall at all with the steering and there was in 2014 . I bought this car last year so I am the owner and am not sure how to go about this. I got it checked out and the mechanic said there is definitely an issue with the rack and pinion and shaft . Also my passenger seatbelt light remains on at all times and there have been minor issues with them.

Action: suddenly, while driving, the steering wheel began "ratcheting" when making a turn, and the wheels would not respond to the direction of the steering wheel. Repair required replacement of the rack & pinion assembly plus the steering shaft (rusty) for a total cost of $1,300 (including $100 "fee" imposed by gm to be able to keep the failed parts). 8 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/17/2015

I was at a stop sign and as I accelerated and made a left turn the steering went out completely half way through my turn. The steering wheel would spin freely in either direction and it in no way allowed me to steer. My vehicle went into the ditch by the time I stopped. I had just minutes before gotten off the interstate. Had someone been walking along the road that day I could have hit and killed them. This failure came without warning. The steering had a small amount of play before the incident, however no more than I felt was normal for a car of this age. The issue was found to be that the steering shaft pulled out of the rack and pinion. I have a picture of the part after the failure, but before it was replaced that I can send if you wish. If this is a common issue it is very dangerous to the owners and those around them.

13 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/08/2012

Today we driving through a parking lot and trued to turn and heard a popping noise, and then lack of steering. The steering wheel turned but the wheels did not. Had to call a tow truck at a cost of $88. 00 and took it to my local chevy dealer. The diagnosed the problem as the steering intermediate shaft bolt broke and also the airbag sensor. The total cost of this repair $88. 00 for the tow truck, $1500. 00 for the repair and 2 1/2 days without the car. We have had this popping noise for a while and no one could figure out what it was. Some dealers said we needed to replace the complete rack and pinion steering system, others said it just needed greased. We chose to grease it and the noise went away for a while. So far I have replaced the power steering motor, which gm reimbursed me for about 1 year after I had it repaired. It seems like there are many complaints about this problem. It has been a good car except for these constant problems. Something needs to be done so gm will fix these issues.

14 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 09/04/2011

Bought this veh. Brand new 2004. Had steering issues from the beginning. The vehicle had less than 65k on it. Always had vehicle serviced at the dealer or dealership I worked for. Had steering shaft replaced, had steering shaft bolt replaced, had rack and pinion replaced. . Son drove the veh. , making a left hand turn in the outer left turning lane left him with lots of room to turn, wheel locked up and he crashed ! veh. Is totaled, notified insurance company that too many issues with the steering and locking up situation. . Even gave them the web site to look for themselves. The way I see it is it is one less very dangerous veh. On the road. To bad gm doesn't handle this. . . One yard either direction and my son would have hit solid concrete poles or heavy reinforced intersection lighting and electrical box and I would be filing wrongful death suit. Why does it have to go to this extreme?.

15 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 06/06/2011

I have been having power steering problems with my 2004 chevy Malibu for several years. It feels like the steering goes completely out while driving on freeway or other roads and find this to be a safety issue. I originally had dealership check steering and was told it was fine and there was no recall, but I have read where several others are experiencing the same problem. In the last few months, the problem has gotten worse for my daughter, who now drives the car. The power steering light has been coming on and goes off when you park or restart the car. She recently lost all power steering and had difficulty steering the vehicle off the road. Today, we took the Malibu to the gm dealership where we purchased it, and ouch!. . . Was told the repairs total $900 plus tax. Dealership will need to replace steering column as motor has gone bad and also need to replace the intermediate shaft that connects to the column since it is binding up. I don't know whether to get a second opinion and wonder if we can wait to have the shaft replaced? should I also contact gm to see if they will reimburse for parts?.

16 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/01/2011

The intermediate shaft which is connected to the steering column was replaced in 2007 when the vehicle had less than 30,000 miles and was under warranty. It has to be replaced again at 83,00 miles. This is definitely a gm design issue. The electronic power steering module has been replaced, the rack/pinion has been replaced and neither part should have to be replaced when the vehicle is under 80,000 miles. . Gm customer service refuses to accept that this is not normal wear and tear of a vehicle even though this will be the second replacement of this part. Hundreds of owners of this 2006 Malibu maxx have the exact same issue therefore it can not be the driver but is definitely a engineering design issue. Gm needs to be honest and own up to the failures of their vehicle designs. There are losing loyal customers because of their inability to provide a recall on this vehicle. It is their responsibility to provide the consumers with safe vehicles. Steering issues are definitely a serious hazard. Gm must be held accountable for their vehicle failures. This vehicle needs to be recalled and at the very least gm should pay for the repairs.

20 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

On 8/29/09 I asked my mechanic to listen to the clunking sound made when the steering wheel was turned left and right. He checked and said it was the rack and pinion. I have had this problem before and had 2 steering columns replaced and the steering shaft. Now it's the rack and pinion. The above incidents were covered under warranty but not now. I checked for recalls but there are none. I have seen many complaints about the same thing on car stats. Can't something be done by chevy before someone gets killed.

21 Steering Pinion Shaft problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 06/06/2009

Purchased 2007 Malibu lt used with 29,097 miles with remainder of factory warranty and extended warranty after that. Soon after purchase a popping clunking noise became apparent in the steering mostly when turning either direction. Put off by dealer until factory warranty void then was told that steering gear in rack & pinion defective ( this was at 42,509 miles) they then replaced the whole rack and pinion assy. No noise for 3800 miles then right back to where we started. Finally received appointment for dealer repair shop at 47,096 miles. Car was inspected and we were told that intermediate shaft is making the noise but it "is not a safety concern and we should be fine driving the vehicle" I specifically asked the service desk at the dealer if there might be a safety recall or service bulletin and was told that there were none. Your web site shows service bulletin #060232007 that directly pertains to this problem, and also complaint # 10257971 that is precisely what our problem is. This noises we contend with are not some little wimpy things that you can only hear with the windows up, but loud enough for persons standing on the sidewalk or driveway to hear plainly my wife and I are both disabled and we are almost afraid to go anywhere in the vehicle for fear of a breakdown, not to mention anybody riding with us. I was told by the dealer that we would have to pay (again) for more repair to the steering, but that it was an ongoing engineering problem that gm has had for years, and they couldn't (or wouldn't?) guarantee that it (the problem ) wouldn't crop up again later. We would just like to spread the word to other gm owners.

Failure Date: 08/15/2006

I purchased my 2005 chevy Malibu maxx LS as a "program car" thinking it was the next best thing to a new car. I guess I was wrong. Since purchasing the vehicle in April 2006 I have had consistent trouble with my front end. I have had to take it to the dealer for warranty repairs four times! now at 50,500 miles my front end is acting up again. The last time I had my repairs done I was out of warranty and called gmac and asked for a repurchase. Gmac contacted my dealer and returned a call to me stating that I should try another dealer they could not get anywhere with my current dealer. I was not surprised after being told by the shop leader that"his wife's car did the same thing and that the best thing I could do is drive it till its paid for! I have had it with this car and the service my local dealer . I love gmac and I wish they would be more aggressive at dealing with bad dealerships. My dealership made me feel stupid and like I was bothering them. I am still paying on my Malibu but am looking to trade but I am so scared that I will just gain a whole new problem from another vehicle. . . What do I do?.

However, after the vehicle was inspected and the dealer determined the problem was the steering shaft, the dealer informed the contact currently no repairs could be made to the vehicle. This was due to the manufacturer not having a remedy or TSB to the problem, but they were aware the problem existed. The dealer recommended the contact should continue driving the vehicle and no repairs were made.
