While driving home from work on the early morning of October 17th 2018, my tie rod end snapped in my vehicle, causing me to go off the county road into a tree head on going 60 mph. I also was not wearing a safety belt so fortunately I am still here to write this. Its been a road to recovery and still got a ways to go but this should definitely be looked into so it does not happen to any one else. I understand accidents happen but this is playing with peoples lives if this is a flaw with the vehicle.

When I had my right inner and outer tie rods replaced I left the shop and I heard a cluncking when I would make a turn I took it back to the shop and they said a screw had worked its way half way out and there is no way to get it in or out because it's wedged up against the rack and pinion without replacing the rack. And was told (off the record) would have no problem still driving it. I asked if it was safe and was told that when the screw breaks I will feel a jerk but will be able to control the car. So I was on the highway and lost my steering almost completely . Managed to get it off the road and towed home. I had another shop replace my power steering pump and my rack and pinion. I was told that the decrepit a hole in the rack and was just sitting there and my rack and pinion bracket had broken and the rack was also just sitting there. And I was lucky I wasn't killed.

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 50 mph, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the electronic stability control warning indicator displayed "off" and the power steering failed. The vehicle was taken to three independent mechanics. The first independent mechanic diagnosed that the failure was an inner tie rod failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then taken to a tire shop where it was diagnosed with a tire rod and sway bar malfunction. The brackets on the sway bar were replaced, but the issue persisted. The vehicle was then taken to a third independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle with a possible rack and pinion malfunction. The mechanic informed the contact of a recall and was advised to take the vehicle to a general motor dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 152,000.
I received a letter from general motors explaining they knew issues with the rack and pinion for my 2004 Chevrolet Malibu during the first 150,000 miles of the vehicle at no charge. It also states if I paid for repairs I would get reimbursed for this. Currently I have 48,857 miles. My steering column went out of control while I was in motion. I had the rack and pinion and outer tie rod replaced on my vehicle on (4/4/17). I called gm on 4/11/17. In the morning, they said I would get re-imbursed. In the afternoon I received a phone call stating I would not get re-imbursed. I believe there are currently 12 recalls for this vehicle. I would like this matter of the rack and pinion issue be looked at further by the safety board to impose a safety recall. If it happened to my car, it may happen to other gm cars.

I was going from eb i294 onto sb il394 when the car suddenly changed lanes, it was late and there was very little traffic,so no accident happened, I got the car to a repair shop and they told me the front end cradle that the steering rack mounts to has rusted out, causing me to have very bad steering, and when it happened it bent the steering rack and the tie rod ends. The repair with a salvaged rack was $1800. 00, I am very dissapointed with this car because it has no other rust. I was told by the repair facility this is very common on chevy Malibus, Ford vans, and suburu outbacks. This is terrible the manufacture would sacrafice peoples lifes to save a few dollars!.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering became difficult to maneuver. The vehicle regained steering on its own. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician stated that the tie rod end needed to be replaced. After the repair the failure continued. The driver was traveling approximately 45 mph when she lost control of the steering and crashed into a telephone pole. The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The contact stated that the driver sustained injuries to her neck, head and back. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
I have made this complaint before. It concerns the front wheel skake, vibrattion. After getting tired of this I put the car on jacks removed the wheel and found the tie rod end ball nut to be loose and the ball joint to be frightenally worn. I replaced the lower control arm and tightened the tie rod ball nut myself. The problem has completly dissapeared. Funny the dealership couldn't figure this out. I think that other owners should be warned of this potentially fatal condition!.
Intermittent loss of power steering that occurs under two different scenarios. Upon hard acceleration (as when entering a highway), steering will periodically lock-up with a series of 4 chimes coming from the information display panel on the dashboard. Power steering assist returns upon deceleration. Also, I've have had several instances of power steering loss when backing up in colder winter temperatures. Power assist returns after turning off and restarting the vehicle. Dealer has been unable to recreate either scenario as it happens intermittently, the vehicle has not been repaired for this defect nor has it been in an accident but let's not wait for one. It's quite obvious from thousands of internet posts that this is a known problem that gm refuses to acknowledge. An nhsta recall would be nice. Secondly, the vehicle has had numerous repairs to front suspension, steering and brake components that should not fail within the first the 60k miles of ownership (some were replaced with less than 35k). Components replaced include; strut tower assembly, both tie rods (inner and outer), steering column, right rear caliper (snapped parking brake cable), all four brake rotors replaced. For the folks who spent their hard earned money on thier Malibu maxx and are reading this online, please take the time to post your stories. Gm should be held accountable for their inaction and refusal to acknowledge serious steering related defects. It won't happen until the NHTSA receives enough complaints to force a recall.
I was driving down the highway around 11 pm I went to make a right turn and all of a sudden the steering wheel locked up and the car started beeping about the power steering. The next day I go to have the car inspected and it drives normal no power steering lights on. I have called to find out if there are any recalls and there are not this happens too often to just be ignored my father was the previous owner and it was happening to him as well. I have replaced the rack and pinion, control arms and tie rods and still nothing is working.
Mid-June, 2011:vehicle was making a roaring noise: the result was that the front wheel bearings were broken
end of August 2011: difficulty turning the steering wheel accompanied by a loud grinding sound, the result was that the steering shaft and outer tie rod were broken and had to be replaced. September 2011: extreme difficulty applying brakes, on occasion would appear normal. Had 3 brake inspections done within a week and a half period. When brakes no longer would operate , tit was determined that the master cylinder needed to be replaced. 4.

In January of 2010 I went in to get new tires and an alignment on my 06 chevy Malibu lt. They told me that they could not do the alignment due to inter tie rods needed to be replaced. I ordered the parts and took it back in at the end of the week. A month later I noticed there was a clicking or popping noise. The noise wasn't consistent with turning or going forward it only made the noise every so often, so I thought nothing of it. Today I was driving the power steering light came on my steering locked up and I almost hit another car. I took it in to have it looked at it happens that it is that electric power steering had failed. This part is going to be replaced, until the car is parked and will not be driven. The car only has 82,000 miles on it. I am not the only one that has this problem with the Malibu. I have 3 children that ride in this car with me. Chevy knows there is a problem, please recall the Malibu for the safety of everyone on the road.
2005 chevy Malibu LS steering began to lock up on slow turns. There was no warning, just a sudden locking of the steering column. (it would not turn. Literally lock the steering wheel until additional speed could be maintained. The problem started intermittently 2 weeks ago & steadily worsened. Happening 10-12 times a day this week. Hit 2 curbs, nearly jumped one curb & nearly hit a car. We had to put the car in reverse to straighten the steering prior to completing the turn. Car has 85000 miles on it. Mechanic shop replaced rack/pinion steering & both front end rear tie rod rings. This defect is apparent on Malibu's according to the numerous complaints seen on the internet.
I have a 2006 chevy Malibu maxx that has been knocking near the front end, indicating possible cv joint issues or some other suspension or steering problems. I have had the tie rods replaced once but the symptoms later returned. Most recently, the power steering failed, locking during a right turn and causing me to drive out of my lane. This has happened on at least 3 occasions in January 2010 and thankfully has not resulted in an accident. Had my wife been driving with her bad back, she would not have had the strength to control the car and avoid a potential accident. I took it to my local mechanic who told me it was the electronic steering system and the column needed to be replaced. He also told me that there are literally hundreds of forums discussing this exact problem in the same model vehicle over about 4 model years but there was no recall. There is an obvious problem with the steering in this model vehicle and needs to be fixed and recalled before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.
I was having problems with my car shaking when driving, so I had my tires checked but it was not the tires. The problem was my outer tie rod ends need to be replaced. My car is a 2006 chevy Malibu, which is in good condition & regularly serviced. There are three other people I know personally with the same model car that is having the same problems. After taking my car to the shop, I found that is a hard part to locate because they are suppose to last for years before needing to be replaced. I think the Chevrolet dealer should further investigate this because its not fair to the consumers to have suffer the expense of the repair.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard rattling noises from the front end and the steering column. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where it was repaired (repair details were not given). Shortly after, the vehicle was taken in for routine maintenance and the contact was informed that the front passenger tie rod and steering knuckle needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Upon receiving the vehicle back, the contact began to hear rattling noises from the front end and steering wheel intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the steering module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure continued. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000 and the current mileage was approximately 60,000. The VIN was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact was driving at 25 mph when the vehicle exhibited a popping noise at the front end and the wheels wobbled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who performed a diagnostic that located the failure at the intermediate steering shaft. The dealer replaced the steering shaft and the tires were replaced several times, but the failure was not corrected. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact to take the vehicle back to the dealer for further inspection. The dealer performed a second diagnostic that located the failure as the front lower ball joint, tie rods and the steering column having to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 34,000 and the current mileage was 76,600. Updated11/29/11 updated 12/02/11.
I bought my car in 2006. It is a 2005 Malibu maxx. The first week that I bought it I had to take it to the dealership to have repairs made on the front end. I was told the struts and cv joints needed to be replaced. Fine. . . It was still under manufacturer's warranty. After a few months, another sound from underneath the front end. This time I was told it was the steering column assembly. They replaced that again under warranty. Then one year later I returned due to more noises coming from the front end. This time. . . No warranty. I was told that there was a problem in the steering but they would cover it since it was a known problem with these cars. Also they told me a tie rod end was about to snap so they replaced it. I had to pay. Now, only a few months after that, the noise in the steering is back again. Will this ever end?????.
The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a cracking noise while turning the vehicle. The contact pulled over and noticed that the entire front steering rack and pinion system failed at 15,000 miles. The tie rods failed later at 18,000 miles and caused front end damage and front tire damage. He has had the rack and pinion replaced under warranty and the tie rods will have to be replaced at an estimated cost of $240. The manufacturer has been notified. The current mileage was 18,520 and failure mileage was 15,000. Updated 02-19-08 updated 02/14/08.
Tie rod end failure.
At approximately 35,000 miles and replacement of front tires twice, took vehicle to dealership and found that the steering rack and leftside outer tierod end needed to be replaced. Dealership replaced the items. At 60,000 miles and after replacement of right side tire 2 times, vehicle was taken for a front end alignment and was told that the right side tierod end needed to be replaced because it wouldn't maintain alignment. Contacted dealer and was told that it was out of warranty, but they would look at it and give an estimate to repair it.
2005 Malibu, have had both tie rod ends replaced, struts etc. Makes a loud clunking when driving at low speeds and turning. Sounds like wheels coming loose. Sound, sounds like it is coming from steering column, check engine light comes on when I fill gas tank and stays on until approx 1/2 tank.
Since purchasing my 2005 chevy Malibu maxx in September of 2006, the vehicle has required an inordinate amount of maintenance time. , especially for a conservative driver like myself. In three years, both lower control arms with ball joints (the arms are of aluminum construction) have had to be replaced twice. In the same time, the car has twice needed tie rod replacement my garage mechanic indicates that other Malibu maxx customers, even with a newer model year, are experiencing identical problems.
: the contact stated while driving at various speeds the vehicle was difficult to steer and the brakes vibrated. The dealership determined the tie rod had broken and repaired the vehicle.
After coming to a complete stop, applied gas, vehicle would not accelerate. Contacted dealer. Tie rod bolt had fallen off. *akconsumer was able to manuever the vehicle to a nearby gas station. The worker at the service station noticed the left front tire was turned sideways. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. Consumer asked for a replacement but was told the only recourse was to repair it.
