I was driving at night and both headlights (low beams) started flashing off and on then went completely out, I hit the dimmer switch and turned the hi beams on and they worked fine. When I shut my high beams off my low beams came back on and stayed on for the rest of my 120 mile trip. Four days later on my way to work in the dark the same thing happened, the following day my low beams would not turn on and I have to hold the dimmer switch to keep my high beams on or I will have no headlights. ( one hand on the dimmer switch one hand on the steering wheel). I suspect it is the multi function switch in the steering column which is a $300 part. But have not had it professionally diagnosed. This is a real safety issue that gm needs to address!.

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contact was driving approximately 50 mph with the headlights illuminated when both headlights failed to operate. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road and engaged the low beams. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the failure was contributed to the dimmer switch. The contact planned to have the vehicle repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

Pertaining to my 2005 Monte Carlo lt 3. 8 v-6. . . While driving with high beams on the headlights will shut off. . . This has happened at least a dozen times since I bought the car used with 23,000 miles on it last August 2009. . . When they shout off I have to use the dash switch to turn them back on. . . I did end up driving off the edge of the road one evening when this happened. . . No major damage done to myself, the vehicle or property where the incident occur but scared me really bad!!! I did go back and rack the ruts out of the edge of the lawn where it happened. . . Very dangerous situation. . . Should be and needs to be addressed by gm. . .
Headlight high/low switch on multi-function stalk fails and prevents switching from high to low beam, especially hard to switch from high to low. Dealer said entire stalk needs to be replaced and part along is over $300 not including labor. There have been times when headlights go out complete when switching between high and low beams. Many reports of this problem on internet with several gm models from about 2000-2003 model years.

While driving at night with headlights on and switching from high beam to low beam using steering mounted switch the head lights would go out. The lights would only come back on after repeated switching of the high beam switch.
Headlights go completely out when switching to or from high and low beam. Returning switch to previous beam will generally make them start working again.
I have a complaint with the multifunction switch on my 2004 chevy Monte Carlo. When turning high beam on and off there seems to be a loose connection there and sometimes it takes multiple times to change the beam selection. Occasionally my headlights will go out completely when this happens. I don't feel that this part should be worn for the amount of driving I do in the evening where I would use this function. My vehicle has 86,289 miles on it and again, majority would be daytime driving. This problem started approximately 1 year ago and has since.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The contact noticed that when he switched the headlights from high to low beam, the headlights would completely shut off. In 2005, the dealer could not find any failures with the vehicle; however, it recurred three days later. The manufacturer has not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 40,000 and failure mileage was approximately 10,000.
