38 problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1997 Chevrolet S10. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Brakes: the front brakes will lock up at slow speeds, particularly if the vehicle has set idle for a few days. This has been a continuous problem for the last 4 years. Additionally, the anti-lock brakes will sometimes engage, allowing the vehicle to continue, with no means of stopping.
The contact states there NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000 concerning anti lockbrakes. This vehicle is experiencing the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to vi and the year, and model. The vehicle has not been repaired at this time.
When applied the brakes on normal conditions. Vehicle will take longer to stop, making unsafe to drive. Please provide further information.
Took my 1997 S10 pickup to a mechanic and requested he check the brakes. The brake pedal faults when continueing to apply pressure and begins to make a bouncing type of feeling and the distance to stop (especially on wet roads) cannot be determined. This is a dangerous problem. The mechanic stated that the abs were faulty and to contact a dealer and have the VIN researched for recalls, etc. Also referred me to NHTSA.
Vehicle will not stop every time if rolling slow. Say in traffic.
While driving 15 mph applied brakes, had to push really hard to get vehicle to stop, there was a squishy noise, and extended braking distance. Brake booster causing noise, dealer replaced.
Consumer was traveling outiside of driveway, there was snow on ground, went to apply brakes, and brakes didn't hold. Dealership was aware of problem.
Vehicle will not stop in rain or snow or while driving on rough pavement.
When braking quickly or a complete stop ant lock brake system doesn't kick in. Pedal goes down to the floor, and there is no braking. Brakes grab a little with pulsating. Dealership is aware of problem.
Unwilling to accept blame for poor engineering. No safety defect mentioned within summary.
While driving down the highway, it was not raining and coming to a stop light, consumer pressed on brakes, vehicle stopped, and then brake pedal released. Consumer went into an intersection. Consumer felt this was a safety issue.
Anti-lock brakes not stopping vehicle while in 2 wheel drive, slids 20 feet through intersection while going 25 mph, no accident, no fatalities, no brakes either.
While making a stop, the anti-lock brake system would come on, but the vehicle would continue to travel. Please provide further information.
Ea 94 038/abs braking system: vehicle experiencing problem with abs system. Whenever brakes are applied on rough surface or bumps wheels lockup. Vehicle had been inspected by dealer on two occasions, and informed consumerthat nothing could be found. Also, when backing up, makes noise, sprong, sprong, and sprong as plunking on a banjo, like a spring letting go.
Consumer was driving vehicle on street at approximately 35 mph, normal road conditions. Consumer was moving into left turning lane, applying brakes to slow down, brake pedal went down floor , causing vehicle to slow down, but not to stop. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that nothing could be found.
While driving at 60 mph the consumer went to apply the brakes to slow down, the vehicle started at the same speed . The consumer contacted the dealer, the vehicle has been in the shop for repairs four times. The dealer can't determine the nature of the problem.
While driving in snow/ice/ in cold weather & had applied (abs) brakes, vehicle failed to stop. Pedal went to floor. Nearly had an accident with fire truck. Vehicle towed to dealer. Mechanic informed owner no problem with abs brakes after being told tow truck driver.
When applying abs brakes pedal goes to the floor, causing extended stopping distance which nearly resulted in a collision. Vehicle taken to dealer, computer shows no problems.
Abs brake problems; while driving on normal road conditions, during normal braking, driver applied the brakes and the truck would not stop normally, driver had to keep pumping the brake pedal in order to get truck to stop. Dealer not able to locate problem with truck.
When the brakes are applied the pedal goes to the floor intermittently.
Applied the brakes to stop from crashing into a curb at 15 mph the brakes did not pick up. The end result was crashing into a tree.
When applying the brakes to stop the van they did not respond.
When applied brakes stopped intermittently, no warning lights, pedal sometimes goes to floor. Dealer has not duplicated problem, cause unknown.
In panic stops, the braking system will "coast about 20 feet" then the braking system will not function. Dealer cannot determine the problem. Faulty braking system caused extended stopping distance which resulted in an accident.
Owner claimed that when she applied the brakes they locked up for a minute or two then released.
Owner tried to come to a quick stop and the truck has abs, the right rear wheel locked up, and did not stop the vehicle. He went through the stop sign.
Left front brakes lock up on slick surfaces. If simulated right and left will exhibit same deficiency at 50mph on dry pavement.
When applying the brakes the pedal go to the floor and the vehicle keeps going and pulls to the right. Dealer has not seen.
When applying the abs brakes on wet pavement the pedal travels to the floor, causing extended stopping distance, resulting in a collision. Please give any further details.
While driving consumer tried to make a sudden stop by depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle continued to travel, lost control, resulting in a crash.
Was driving & had started to apply the brakes. Brake pedal would leave the foot after being pressed. Abs acts as if its working on the right front side. Brakes would go out when the roads are either wet or snowy. Currently, doing it on dry pavement. Having problems stopping vehicle due to lack of brakes. Taken to dealer & mechanic indicated brakes were fine.
The vehicles anti lock brakes seem to (at random) engage far to early under normal braking conditions causing increased stopping distances and near misses. Several times when approaching an intersection at speeds between 35 and 40 mph and the lights change, when applying normal braking pressure to stop the truck the brake pedal will drop to the floor and the abs brakes kick in extending the stopping distance to dangerous distances as a result. If the brakes had remained normal and the abs not engaged the truck would have stopped in the normal amount of distance for that speed. In short I can stop my 69 Cadillac faster at times than I can this pickup truck. The truck has been to the dealer a few times now for this problem and they say there is nothing wrong with the brakes. However I did recently notice that up to the 1996 model year for the s-10 the trucks are being recalled for a abs problem. . . . . I think that needs to be extended to the 97 model year as well.
Intermittently when the brakes are applied the pedal becomes mushy, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer has inspected vehicle several times.
When appyling the abs brakes pedal goes to the floor, causing extended stopping distance. Please give any further details.
The brakes 'grab' (lock up) on occasion (in damp or wet weather), and one time almost failed completely (I was turning a corner or there would have been an accident).
