68 problems related to windshield wiper/washer have been reported for the 1998 Chevrolet S10. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
While driving during rainy weather windshield wipers intermittently failed. Dealership had been notified, but the problem was not resolved.
Intermittently windshield wipers become inoperable, obstructing the driver's view. Dealer stated there was no recall on this vehicle.
Wipers work only every once in a while and doesn't work when its needed. Consumer understands that there is recall for other Chevrolet vehicles but not on the 1998 s-10. I believe that it needs to be looked at again.
Drivers wiper control is intermittent or appears to have a weak or poor design. Wipers can be selected to intermmitent, will work for a while properly then may switch to low with no driver involvement. Sometimes when switched to off, wipers may continue operating for 1-2 minutes. Sometimes when selecting "mist" on wiper control, wipers may operate anywhere from 5-10 "sweeps" (should only be one).
While driving in the rain, the windshield wipers stopped working and caused the consumer to pull over. This was a common problem with gm, there were recalls on the vehicle, however the consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall.
Consumer stated his vehicle was having the same problem as mentioned in recall concerning windshield wipers. Dealer will not repair because VIN was not included. Recall number unknown.
Consumer states that while driving and no warning windshield wipers will work intermittently, and it will be hard for the consumer to see during rainy weather. Dealer notified.
1998 Chevrolet S10 has failing wiper motor, they work intermittently or sometimes not at all.
Consumer states that while driving and with no warning the windshield wipers will work intermittently, and it will be hard for the consumer to see during rainy weather. Dealer notified.
Windshield wipers work intermittently. When on delay will sometimes work, but mostly go at low speed regardless of selection. 20% of the time wipers will not turn on at all. When turned off wipers continue until they feel like stopping and then stop half way down the windshield. When using the mist, wipers continue to run from 6 to 20 sweeps, and sometimes dont go all the way down.
While driving, the windshield wipers failed to operate.
The windshield wipers became inoperative. A recall was issued on similar makes and models, however this vehicle was not include due to VIN#.
Windshield wipers operate only sporadically. Wipers sometimes stop working during periods of rain, creating loss of visibility and potential for vehicle crash. At times wipers fail to start when turned "on. " dealer mechanic says this condition is widwspread, but manufacturer has so far failed to include this model in a recall. Earlier models having the same symptoms. Manufacturer should expand recall to include later models with identical problems as those models under existing recall.
The vehicle's windshield wipers failed without warning while driving in the rain. Dealer diagnosed failure of washer circuit board.
Windshield wipers fail in mid sweep. Mist setting speeds up to fast.

Windshield wipers work intermittently or stop during operation. Dealer contacted. Feel free to provide any further information.
Windshield wipers. This is evidentually a defective part if it fails within 3yrs, and is replaced at owner expense, sometimes going through several expense before corrected. Componet "wiper mogular" fails causing on visability with rain, fog-up, etc. While vehicle is moving, causing total suprise and emergency action to avoid collision, run off road, as you cannot see. Something should be done as some drivers cannot react safely. Thanks.
The windshield wipers stopped working while driving in the rain.
When activated, windshield wipers operate erratically and may shut off without warning. The erratic behavior happens throughout the year but appears worse (especially shutting off unexpectedly) in warm weather. Recently I have found that turning the wipers to high will usually restart them after they shut off. Erratic behavior during intermittent operation includes multiple wipes (sometimes more than 10) per cycle. This problem has been present for approximately the last 30,000 miles (I am currently at 72,500). I am estimating the incident date below around the first time I noticed the problem. The date is accurate +/- 6 months. I have not yet contacted the dealer about the problem. I am planning to do so either today (1/2/03) or tomorrow.
The windshield wipers on my 1998 chevy S10 do not work properly. They wil not turn on, turn off, or return to their full off position consistently. On the mist setting they don't stop after a few swipes nor do they work consistently on the intermittent setting.
Wipers fail to work when turned on, intermittent problem. Started within one year of purchase of vehicle when new.
Windshield wiper reservior and windshield wiper motor failed. Yh.
Windshield wipers shut off while driving during inclement weather. Dealer had not determined the cause of the problem.
The windshield wipers did not functioning properly when using washing fluid or under regular use.
While the consumer was driving in rain the windshield wipers failed.
Windshield wipers fail to operate at times and at other times they won't shut off - mechanic has said this is very common is chevys and seems to be related to a faulty control module which tends to crack and allow water into the module which will keep the wipers from functioning properly only when there is rain, fog, humidity. Seems to be related to the recall issued in 1996 but did not extend to later models.
Windshield wipers fail to operate at times and at other times they won't shut off. The local Chevrolet dealership replaced a the multi function switch which still hasn't corrected the problem. The service manager stated that they have replaced several of those switches in the past but would not commit to a number. I also own a 1998 GMC jimmy which is the same basic vehicle. It is experiencing the same type of problems which leads me to believe there is a wide spread problem. I also spoke with another jimmy owner who reported wiper problems also. I contacted Chevrolet customer service and reported the problem. I believe if you check you will find that many GMC and Chevrolet vehciles have experienced wiper related problems. In addition, both of my vehciles have oil leaks coming from the hoses that go from the engine to the remote oil filter assembly. I am told by a gm dealership employee that this is a common problem. I appreciate your attention in this matter. Thank you!.
Windshield wipers intermittently failed to operate during inclement weather. Dealer replaced the windshield wiper control module. The wiper control module developed cracks. The consumers concern is that the same control module was used in the 1998 vehicle but the recall stopped at the 1997 model/year and the recall should include all model years that develop this problem.
During inclement weather windshield wipers stopped working, causing poor visibility to the driver.
While driving during inclement weather windshield wipers stopped functioning, causing poor visibility. There's a item located just under the hood on the firewall, that if it gets wet I would cause the wipers to malfunction. On one occasion, the consumer's wife was driving on the highway when it started to rain, the wipers failed. The 1997 models were recalled but the consumer owns a 1998 which experienced the same defect.
